Sohodolls are interviewed by David Magen for www.alternatv.co.il - Israel's number one alternative music website

1. In your "myspace" you say that you are influenced by artists from Dr. Dre and the notorious BIG to Soft Cell and Visage. how do these new romantics combine with hardcore gangsters in your music?

Maya Von Doll: Very Easily! We Are Inspired By Hard Hip Hop Beats And The Cheap Glamour Of 80s Synths. On Top Of These Influences We Build Our Own Melodies. Everything From Irish Folk, Gypsy Music And Kraftwerk, Hanoi Rocks And The Clash Goes Through Our 'Mincer' (Not Very Kosher!) And Comes Out Like A Sohodolls Song In The End!

Toni Sailor: the best music (as well as art in anyform) comes when you mix very different influences as we do from irish….

2. What will the album sound like - will it be more "manson" influenced, like "stripper", or will it have that "electro glam" feel, like in "pleasures of soho"?

Maya :
dirty electro glam synth bass lines marilyn manson style, marilyn monroe style jazz, touch of hip hop, hint of '77 british punk and plenty of rock 'n' roll

3. Tell me about "soho dolls" shows. what kind of experience do you give to the audience?

Toni:
sexy, sweaty, raw power, style, blood, broken teeth!

Maya: We give a very energetic show and Sohodolls is a band that must be seen live to fully understand and appreciate us. All the musicians in Sohodolls are very creative and skilled. We also go mad and we are on the brink of anarchy on stage sometimes! I've come off stage twice with broken teeth (in Milan and London) and once with a bleeding knee (in Oslo). Of course there are also more vulnerable and delitcate moments on stage like when we perform 'My Vampire' or 'Bang Bang'. We also have an appetite for humour… tongue in cheek…

4. Are the "soho dolls" a one woman project, or is it a joint venture? who writes the lyrics? music?

Maya:
I started the band and I've written most of the material, music and lyrics included. But since Toni came on board I've been writing more with him. After a song is written, the rest of the band have their input too. Sohodolls is most definitely a band.

5. Is it true that Steve lyon, who also worked with Depeche Mode and The Cure, is making the finishing touches on your album?

Maya:
Yes, Steve is mixing our album. He's such a great guy to work with. Not only is he good at what he does but you can talk to him about any topic from politics in Ethiopia to vegetarian cuisine!! He is a lot of fun and has an excellent pair of ears.

6. Some hardcore fans have found an older version of "prince harry" on youtube, which featured a totally different lineup. what caused the change in the band?

Maya:
I started Sohodolls in a rush and things began to happen much faster to us than other bands. Within months of me recruiting the others, we had a record deal. Bands develop and go through line-up changes a lot – with me it just happened in the public eye because press interest came so quickly!
We lost a couple of people along the way due to musical differences.. as well as a lack of musical differences.

7. Any messages for the Israeli crowd? how do you feel about coming here?

Maya:
We would love to play so please invite us, we are ready! We are open to playing anywhere in the world although my father wasn't happy about us doing a gig in Johannesburg! We have played in America, Russia, Germany, Austria, France, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Norway and Turkey already so bring it on!

8. Sohodolls are signed for loser friendly records, which is the label of "client", which were signed by Depeche Mode, while they were on the road. how were the soho dolls discoevered, what made "client" sign you up?

Toni:
We are no longer on Loser Friendly records – that was a tiny deal for just one song. We are now signed to Filthy/Pretty Records (A&G Records) who are a great label that put their money where their mouth is. They take us seriously and they know how to look after a band.

Our first deal was with Alan McGee (Oasis, Libertines) on Poptones. It was also a tiny deal for one song – Prince Harry. Then his wife, who he has a cute child with, is Kate Holmes from Client. She owns Loser Friendly but with us it was the exact same team of people and office as Poptones. Pretty much the same label!

9. Do Sohodolls do weddings and bar-mitzvah's?

Maya:
Not usually but if we agree the price then… maybe!? But no-one has asked us yet! We might cause a divorce.

10. With which dead artist would you like to record a song with?

Maya:
That's such a wicked question! No-one's asked us that before!! I would like to record with Notorious BIG or Kurt Cobain!!! Contrast is good for music. Toni would like to record with Louis Armstrong. Steve would probably do Jeff Buckley or Bob Marley.
