Current mood:Expansive
I'm currently working on a new 'global remix' of my song Just Beneath The Skin.  The original version is the first track on my profile.  Here's how YOU can be a part of this remix- and you don't even need to be a singer or play an instrument!

The idea is to combine my music with spoken voices in various languages/accents, speaking lines from the lyrics of the song.

I am especially interested in various English accents of course, (British, American, Caribbean etc) as well as French, Arabic, Spanish, Italian, Urdu/Hindi, Chinese, Hebrew, Hausa languages.

Simply send an mp3 to imanihekima@yahoo.co.uk or ihekima@yahoo.com with your spoken voice saying THREE lines from the song, in your own language/accent.  One of the lines must be 'Just Beneath The Skin', the other two lines are entirely your choice.
The sooner you're able to send your mp3 in the better, as it will allow me and Chris (Soulfunktion Productions) to make a start on the track.

FUTURE RELEASE/ROYALTIES etc:

As well as being credited for your input, you'll receive a free copy of the song.  The track would appear either on my album (aiming for an early 2010 release) or a possible future single.  In the event of a release, arrangements would be made for you to receive royalties for any airplay the song receives.  I'd also be happy to pay you a session fee at Musicians Union rates for your time, in the event of the song becoming very successful, i.e selling thousands of copies.  In the meantime, I'd be very grateful for you to offer your input for free.

Many thanks to Mel of Aspire management for her assistance in developing this idea.

The lyrics are as follows:

JUST BENEATH THE SKIN

Just beneath the skin
You will hardly know it's in
Push a button if you want to know our names
Invented in the labs
To keep the low life under tabs
Something tells me that there is another aim

Just beneath the skin
Keep the masses disciplined
So the mob won't stray too far out of line
Tamper with their choice
Artificial inner voice
Yet they tell us it is harmless and benign

CHORUS
JUST BENEATH THE SKIN (repeat)

Just beneath the skin
Cleverly we're taken in
Everybody wants their children free from harm
Before very long
Some will think it hardly wrong
If a chip is placed inside their children's arm

And just beneath the skin
Like a shot of heroin
In the interest of the world's security
They say "We're on high alert, c'mon people it won't hurt...be injected, give them your identity"

CHORUS

Just beneath the skin
It's a game we may not win
In the first place, we can't see we're being played
If you've got a doubt
You should ALWAYS seek it out
Truth is hard to face but do not be afraid

CHORUS

Just had a productive day in the studio with Chris.  We worked on the production of 'Everyone's Leaving', one of the tracks on the forthcoming album.  The song is very much in my ball park, it's a true mixture of soul and reggae/dub influences, with its own vibe.  I hope you enjoy it and I look forward to you hearing the full version next year.

These clips were recorded live at the EKTV Truth Festival in Leeds, Oct 2009.  This is the band's second live performance.  Apologies for the recording quality.

Here's an interview I recorded for BCB radio's 'Community Insight' programme, which was broadcast on 28th September  http://www.bcbradio.co.uk .

As well as covering my musical background (some of you will be aware that I pursue a career as a Bollywood specialised solo pianist, as well as being a singer-songwriter), it promoted some Swat Valley fundraising gigs I did, that showcased both my original songs and bollywood material.

I'm pleased to announce that I've just assembled a four piece band, comprising of my brother Stuart Mitchell on drums, Tobie Carpenter on guitars, Philippe Clegg on bass and Imani on keyboards/lead vocals.

I've been gigging alone (on many occasions with Stu on bass also) for the past few years and in all honesty, I didn't see that changing for a while.  However, I have recently been auditioning people with Stu.  To cut a story short, having unsuccessfully tried a few musicians out, Stu put forward the idea of him going on the drums, and I would recruit a bassist and guitarist.  Stu had been drumming recently with ska band Natural Riddim and I welcomed his suggestion.

Fortunately, I bumped into Tobie just after he finished Uni, who said that he and Philippe would be into getting together with me and playing at some point.  I've acually
played briefly with them back in 2005 on a project with poet Nick Toczek.  Here is Phillipe's page, featuring some tracks with Tobie on guitar:  http://www.myspace.com/41125818

We've had a few rehearsals together and it's sounding really good.  I feel that presenting the songs with live musicians will really help to take this project forward.

Our first gig as a unit will be at The Wardrobe, Leeds on Saturday Sept 5th, as part of the brand new 'EAST' monthly music night. Details @

I'm very much looking forward to performing at this year's Bradford Mela, the 21st Birthday of the festival.

As well as doing my own solo set on 14th June, on the 13th of June at 1pm,
I will be working with a great tabla player, Alpesh Moharir, the debut performance of our duo, BOLLYWOOD UNPLUGGED.  Check out my solo piano page at http://www.myspace.com/bollywoodpiano and Alpesh's myspace at http://www.myspace.com/alpsmoharir

It's gonna be a nice weekend and a busy week leading up to it in preparation.  All being well, I should have a bit of video footage to share with you.

Just over a month ago (March 3rd to be exact), the video for my song 'The Robots' Rebellion' was featured in the headlines section of David Icke's official website.  Over a three day period, it received over 2000 hits, some very positive feedback, and a few Myspace friend requests.

The song itself is titled after a 1994 David Icke book of the same name and theme, which makes being featured on his actual site all the more pleasing.  The concept of human beings as 'robots' in today's world is something that many people can relate to, on whatever level.
The video is on my profile page but here it is again:

Introduction: The idea microchipping of human beings, as a means of surveillance and controlling them from within, might appear to be something out of a sci-fi movie.  As you look further, you find that there's more science fact than fiction.  These lyrics address the themes. This song has been in my set for just over a year and is by far the most popular, in terms of feedback.

A growing number of people around the world are familiar with this topic and others related.  However, if the subject is new to anyone and you'd like to find out more,  there are a host of excellent resources online. I recommend Alex Jones' video "The Microchip" for starters: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l39XsMcyvgA

She was the flavour, 'Flava Of the Day'
Until the taste began to slowly go away
Her life is a nightmare, it once was a dream
But right from the get-go she had no chance it seems

CHORUS
WHAT A SHAME (3 TIMES)
OH WHAT A SHAME
WHEN WILL SHE HEAL THE PAIN?

The cracks were appearing from long before
Signs of destruction sycophants just ignored
Her mind is in pieces, her head is in bits
A pipe is on standby, when she needs one more 'hit'

CHORUS
Removed from the picture like a gangster's moll
Used up and worn out like a broken doll
Yet still there are many who wait in the wings
Lined up for the slaughter cos they just wanna sing

CHORUS
