FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: No Culture III
Look, I know that writing press releases is a bit of a joke. This isn’t the Big Day Out and I’m not an international superstar promoter. This is a devoutly independent showcase of artists who share a similar aesthetic concern for doing things their own way, and I’m a one-man production company who picks and chooses his projects according to ideologies. All the same, press releases are fun, so here am I having mine.
The idea for No Culture came about in early 2007, and has subsequently spiraled out of control (in only the most controlled of ways, I promise) to the point where a rather busy April night has evolved into a three day program, and we’re now on to our third occurrence. I’m happy to confess that we’re still learning as we go along - choices like making the festival all-ages and expanding our range of bands has led to a lot of interest and excitement, and we hope to keep growing it from here on in.
No Culture 3 will consist of three events. Here are the details:
FRIDAY MAY 30th.
(Presented by In Finland, Yellow Ghost Records and the LoFly Hangar)
No Culture is, in our minds, more than just another gig or two. The goal is to create unique and memorable events, and in keeping with this, a teaming up with the LoFly Hangar space (151 Musgrave Rd, Red Hill) has resulted in our first No Culture show for 2008.
So, we have AMPERE. No hype or bullshit proselytizing from us. Most are probably already aware of the following facts: They are from Amherst, Massachusetts, some of them used to be in bands like Orchid and Wolves, their 10-15 minute live shows are legendary. If you don’t know them, though, you probably should. This is a band truly living their ideals. Their dedication to the idea of an independent and active alternative community is astounding and inspiring.
They are touring nationally with Melbourne’s MAJORCA, who we’re stoked to have back after their mind-bogglingly intense set at NCII. Joining these two bands will be two of No Culture’s long-time Brisbane favorites - bands who we believe are at the forefront of our local community, and who really do represent what NC is about. QUIET STEPS and TO THE NORTH. There you go.
All bands’ sets will be under 15 minutes in length.
The space has a limited capacity of 150, so we’re selling tickets in advance in order to assure that there are no issues. It is strongly suggested to acquire tickets in advance, as this show stands to be fucking enormous, and we cannot guarantee that tickets will still be on sale on the night. Tickets will be on sale from May 1st at Kill the Music and Rockinghorse. Recap:
Friday May 30th Ampere (usa) Majorca (melb) Quiet Steps To The North
ALL AGES $15 (tickets on sale from May 1) @ Lofly Hangar 151 Musgrave Rd, Red Hill From 8 PM
SATURDAY MAY 31st
Here’s our old time favorite all-day bonanza. It’s back at Ahimsa House in West End, it’s still all ages, and it’s still absurdly big. We’re starting a little earlier and giving more time for breaks between bands though (sorry about last time). Here’s who we’re hanging with:
Travelers:
BASEBALL haven’t played in Brisbane before, even though they’ve played in half of Europe. Go figure. Their Animal Kingdom LP has just been released nationally, and they’re launching it with us at their only Brisbane show. KES BAND haven’t played in Brisbane before either, but Kes’ solo shows have enthralled many, and we’re really excited to have the rock group format at NCIII. They just put out a self-titled album too.
PIKELET was undeniably one of NCII’s biggest surprises, with hardened metallers and folk kids alike sitting agape to watch her loop-psych-folk-drone-thing. We had to have her back. LUCA BRASI’s last recording sold out in 24 hours. How fucking amazing is that? They’re back to aurally assault Brisbane, they will probably kill you.
Anyone remember Purplene? Keywords: Newcastle, Albini, "over before their time"??? 3/4 of that band are now in CHARGE GROUP, along with a violinist. Seriously awe-inspiring and beautiful stuff here. This beauty contrasts nicely with the abrasive TRUE RADICAL MIRACLE, whose grinding and flailing sounds haven’t been seen in Brisbane since 2006. With members living in different states, their shows are all too rare...
ALPS OF NSW hasn’t played in Brisbane in over a year - instead, he chose to go to New Zealand, Europe and the USA, taking his lo-fi organ drone and cassette beats to their unruly lots. This oversight will be corrected at NCIII. This rounds out the list of interstate acts for the show.
Locals:
Writing blurbs about local bands seems less important for a local press release. All the same: We’re proud to once again feature the epic, anthemic and moving sounds of ARROWS at NC III. After a 15-year span of playing in Brisbane, we’re welcoming TURNPIKE back again too.
THE SURROGATE are touring nationally with Rosetta in June, and we are fucking glad they’re playing NC first. RIALTO DECIBEL CHOIR will be stirring hearts and minds with their intricate sounds and pristine vocals, while WILLOWS will showcase their profound understanding of subtlety and texture.
COLLISIONS have apparently added another guitarist, leaving me to assume that their sonic assault has only gotten more severe and exciting. And to round off the first sledge of bands is SWANDIVE, who are just plain nasty, while simultaneously being incredible. Apologies to all of you in these bands, feel free to rip me to shreds for the attempts to describe all y’all.

SUNDAY JUNE 1st
In an effort to provide a more hospitable clime for some of our more subtle festival performers, Our Sunday night show will be held at The Troubadour, allowing a slightly more traditional atmosphere for appreciating the quieter side of our spectrum. Joining the aforementioned PIKELET and CHARGE GROUP will be LET’S NOT (BUT SAY WE DID), the brainchild of me, the organizer of this whole catastrophe. And CHALK AND CHEESE, aka Dan from Paper And The Plane, who will be shedding the epic sounds of said band in favour of just an acoustic guitar and an otherworldly voice.
Recap:
SUNDAY June 1st
Pikelet (melb) Charge Group (syd) Let’s Not (but say we did) Chalk And Cheese
18+ $8 @ The Troubadour From 8pm
More bands will potentially be announced for the Saturday in the upcoming weeks. We will also be offering a very limited number of passes for Friday and Saturday combined at the discounted price of $25 (save $5, buy something nice with it). Please email infinland@gmail.com if you’d like to take us up on this special offer.
Also, whether you love or hate what I have put together for this festival, feedback is always sought. If you really think your band should play, get in contact too.
