You see that yellow ribbon everywhere: "Support Our Troops." It's often on the back of a Hummer or some other gas-greedy SUV. It alwasy seems to me to be an earnest sentiment, well-meaning, akin to "Love Your Mom" or "Eat When Your Hungry."
My new song, "Thanks for the Support" imagines what that support must feel like to one of the troops.
A produced version of this song is available for download on my website, royzimmerman.com.
Enjoy! Pass it along!
Peace, RZ

During the Vietnam era, Dick Cheney sought five deferments from military service. His reason? He had "other priorities." Tom Delay's excuse? So many minority youths had volunteered for the well-paying military positions that there was literally no room for patriotic folks like himself. Rush Limbaugh had a "football injury" that turned out to be a cyst on his ass. How you get a cyst on your ass playing football, I don't want to know.
And what about Bush himself? During the 2004 he actually said out loud that he felt John Kerry's war record was more heroic than his own. And I thought, "Sometimes, satire just writes itself."
My song "Chickenhawk" didn't exactly write itself. I cowrote it with Melanie Harby. And I just posted a video of the song here on MySpace this Memorial Day to honor the fallen. But don't forget Bush, Cheney, Delay, Wolfowitz, Perle, Rumsfeld, et al, who'd gladly have others take the fall for them.
