CARSON, Calif. (Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009) – Major League Soccer’s 2010 expansion club Philadelphia Union today selected defender Shavar Thomas from Chivas USA in the 2009 MLS Expansion Draft. The 28-year-old defender from Hannah Town, Jamaica, is a seven year MLS veteran who made 59 appearances (58 starts) for the Red-and-White since joining the team in 2007. “Shavar is a talented, strong defender, and we wish him the best of luck in Philadelphia,” said Chivas USA Vice President of Soccer Operations Stephen Hamilton. “The reality of the Expansion Draft is that you may lose a valued member of your team, and we’re sorry to see Shavar go. We now turn our focus to putting together our team for the 2010 MLS Regular Season.” Shavar Thomas, born Jan. 29, 1981 in Hannah Town, Jamaica, has made 148 career appearances in Major League Soccer since joining the Dallas Burn as the 10th overall SuperDraft pick out of the University of Connecticut in 2003. Thomas spent the 2003 season with Dallas before joining the Kansas City Wizards, where he played from 2004-2006. In 2007, the Jamaican International joined Chivas USA, playing 59 matches with the Red-and-White from 2007-2009. Thomas has also made 27 appearances with the Jamaican National Team. Per MLS rules, Chivas USA on Monday submitted its 11-player Protected Roster for the 2009 MLS Expansion Draft. Like all 15 current MLS clubs, Chivas USA was allowed to protect only 11 players between its Senior and Developmental rosters, which left 18 Chivas players available for selection by 2010 expansion entrant Philadelphia Union. Chivas USA will start preseason in late January ahead of the 2010 Major League Soccer season, with the Red-and-White’s first match at home against the Colorado Rapids on March 28. A full calendar of matches will be released next year. Chivas USA’s 18-game Season Seat Package, starting at just $180, is on sale now via 1-877-CHIVAS-1 and cdchivasusa.com.

CARSON, Calif. (Monday, Nov. 23, 2009) – Per MLS rules, Chivas USA today submitted its 11-player Protected Roster for the 2009 MLS Expansion Draft, scheduled to take place this Wednesday, Nov. 26. Like all 15 current MLS clubs, Chivas USA was allowed to protect only 11 players between its Senior and Developmental rosters, leaving 18 Chivas players available for selection by 2010 expansion entrant Philadelphia Union.
“The Expansion Draft is designed for new teams to have a chance to be competitive right away, and it forces us to make difficult decisions about our roster,” said Chivas USA Vice President of Soccer Operations Stephen Hamilton. “We wish we could protect more players, but we may have to lose a member of our squad on Wednesday. However, our focus remains on preparing for a successful 2010 season.”
Chivas USA’s 11-player Protected Roster, in alphabetical order, is as follows: Bornstein Braun Cuesta Flores Galindo Kljestan Lahoud Nagamura Padilla Santos Thornton

CHIVAS USA’S ZACH THORNTON NAMED MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER’S COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Thornton wins award after leading MLS in goals against average and shutouts during the regular season
Thornton earned the Comeback Player of the Year award due to his strong play throughout 2009 after enduring two difficult seasons in 2007 and 2008. He led Chivas USA to a 13-11-6 record and posted a career best 12 shutouts and 0.87 goals against average, which ranks second all-time in MLS history behind Pat Onstad’s 0.82 mark in 2007. His 12 shutouts were one shy of the Chivas USA record, set in 2007 by Brad Guzan, who also earned Goalkeeper of the Year honors in that season. In being named Goalkeeper of the Year last week, Thornton became one of just three players to win the award twice, joining Joe Cannon and Pat Onstad.
After spending eight years as the starting goalkeeper for the Chicago Fire, Thornton spent the 2007 season with Colorado, playing just one game, and made no appearances with New York in 2008 before being traded to Chivas USA on Aug. 1 after Brad Guzan’s departure for Aston Villa. Thornton took over as the starter, playing seven games before an injury sidelined him until the final regular season match, and posting a 1.80 goals against average in his eight matches played. Thornton worked in the offseason with Chivas USA Goalkeeper Coach Leo Percovich and on his own, entering the year slimmer and fitter, and started the season by leading the Red-and-White to a 7-1-1 record in the team’s first nine games.
Thornton was drafted by the MetroStars in the 7th round of the 1996 MLS Inaugural Player Draft, playing two seasons with the club as a reserve behind Tony Meola before joining the Chicago Fire in the 1998 Expansion Draft. A star with the Fire for the bulk of the next nine seasons, Thornton also spent six months on loan with Benfica in Portugal in 2004. Winning his first MLS Goalkeeper of the Year title in 1998 with the Fire, a season in which he helped the team to both the MLS Cup and U.S. Open Cup, Thornton won two additional U.S. Open Cups with Chicago in 2000 and 2003, as well as the Supporters Shield in 2003. A six time All-Star (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2009), Thornton ranks second in MLS history in shutouts (70) and wins (125), behind only Kevin Hartman in both categories.
Thornton led the voting for Comeback Player of the Year ahead of Chicago Fire forward Brian McBride and D.C. United midfielder Ben Olsen, the other finalists for the award. It is given to the player who earned the most votes in polling of MLS players, general managers, coaches, and members of the media.MLS Comeback Player of the Year Winners:
