Tale of the Tape for Eddy Ellis

Height: 5'9"
Weight: 175 lbs.
Born: July 7, 1983
Born: Sumner, WA
Hometown: Yelm, WA
Graduated: Yelm High School, 2001
Occupation: Professional fighter, grappling and MMA trainer/instructor
Combined Record (pro & am): 23-16-1

Eddy was a high school wrestler that started fighting after his teammate, Matt Lininger, introduced Ellis to his cousin, and UFC veteran, Dennis Hallman. Ellis and Lininger began training at Hallman's gym in downtown Olympia any time they weren't in school, or at wrestling practice. Starting out by adding submissions to his ground game, Eddy began developing himself into the well-rounded fighter he is today.

His first opportunity to fight came when he was just 16. In his first bout he won a split decision against an older fighter with much more experience. After that Eddy continued to train under Hallman cutting his teeth in various events up and down the west coast. Three weeks before his 21st birthday Ellis competed in his 20th professional bout…he wasn't even able to enjoy the after-fight party following his huge win over Team Quest standout, and current Sport Fight Welterweight Champion, Chris Wilson.

In his six-year career 'Fast' Eddy has fought throughout the United States in high profile events like the United Full Contact Federation (The U.S.'s oldest full contact organization – YES, older than UFC), King of the Cage, World Extreme Cagefighting, International Fighting Championships, Full Contact Fight Federation, Sport Fight, Rumble on The Rock and X-Fighting Championship. He has solidified himself as a hard-nosed fighter that can hang & bang with the very best. He's faced some of the fiercest competition the welterweight division has to offer including UFC veteran Spencer Fisher and Team Quest standout, Ryan Schultz.

Lisa Ward climbs closer to Smackgirl title shot
By Ray Hui ..:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O />on February 26, 2007

When Lisa Ward (8-2) debuted for the Japan-based Smackgirl promotion during the final quarter of '06, she made an immediate presence in the elite level of women's MMA fighters.

In her two Smackgirl fights, she finished both Miku Matsumoto and Misaki Takimoto by armbar and kimura submissions, respectively.

She is off to a good start in '07 with a five-round unanimous decision win against 12-time Smackgirl veteran Masako Yoshida at Fatal Femmes Fighting in Los Angeles.

Although she was crowned the Fatal Femmes Fighting champion, she is still aiming to fulfill one of her MMA goals: to win a Smackgirl title.

Ward spoke with MMAFighting.com about her victory over Yoshida and when she sees herself receiving a Smackgirl title shot.

Q: How does it feel to be the Fatal Femmes Fighting flyweight champ?

A: Awesome. I have been working so hard these last two years and winning that belt was great. Plus it's a really nice belt. It's pretty!

Q: What does it mean to you to be able to compete in the main event of the first women's cage fighting event in America?

A: Really good. We got a lot of media attention for this show. Eddy Millis and his partners did a great job with the show. I just hope I can continue to be the top girl for the flyweight division for a long time.

Q: This time around, you fought a Japanese fighter in America. How did it feel to turn the tables around?

A: A little different. I felt a little extra pressure just because we are in my country. Traveling to Tokyo I felt like the underdog, and I like that feeling. I give much respect to Masako Yoshida. She has a lot of heart.

Q: Grappling is definitely one of your biggest strengths. In fact, you've finished more than half your fights with submissions. Did you find it difficult to do so in California with the 2-minute rounds?

A: Well the two minute rounds just makes it a different fight. This fight I wanted to work on Ground and Pound because there was only two minutes. So that worked out fine, but defiantly grappling is my strength. Fortunately these last two fights I have had, I have been able to open up a new game with letting my hands go a little (in Japan) and at the FFF show I was able to have some great takedowns and then follow up with some elbows. That was a first for me, so it was pretty fun. Of course finishing her would have been nice but I'm glad how it turned out. Unfortunately I got sick a couple days before the show with a bad chest cold, so I was a bit winded feeling.

Q: Did your experience with Smackgirl rules help you adjust to the 2-minute rounds?

A: Honestly I didn't even think about that!

Q: It appears that Smackgirl is looking to start following regular MMA rules. Do you know if they will end up doing that?

A: I don't know if they are going to change their rules. I don't think they should have to change their rules because they are there own organization and not everyone has the same rules. Of course I wouldn't mind if they changed, but I am OK with how things are.

Q: You've said that your goal is to hold a SMACKGIRL title. How close are you to a title shot?

A: I'm getting dodged from Shinashi and her manager. I feel like I have proved myself in earning a title shot. I even asked for one last time we were there and I was told Shinashi does not want to fight me. Hopefully I can get my title shot by the end of the year. That's my goal.

Q: What are your thoughts on Satoko Shinashi?

A: I think she is not a TRUE champion and she should have her belt taken from her.

Q: Yuka Tsuji?

A: Don't really know much about her except that she's pretty tough.

Q: Megumi Fujii?

A: Just a bad ass!

Q: Any final words to all the readers of MMAFighting.com?

A: Thank you to all my sponsors and their continual support in myself and Eddy. Also I want to thank Eddy Ellis for being my love and support and helping become a better person every day. My parents have always supported me even though they didn't agree with all this at first. Thank my little brother (William Ward SWCC) who's in the Navy down in San Diego and my cousin Jeremy Vanzile who just got out of the Marines. All the military men and women I have much admiration and respect for what you do for our country everyday. Without your dedication to this country I wouldn't be able to do what I love to do. Thank you. Oh, and Matt Ferris is a kickass training partner by the way.

The final match of the evening pitted Lisa Ward and Masako Yoshida for the flyweight title. Yoshida, coming off a loss to Megumi Fujii last month, was strong at the start, but it was to no avail as Ward had little problem controlling her Japanese opponent.

It was a five-round, one-sided war that saw Ward slam and elbow her way to a unanimous decision. Once again the short rounds came into play and certainly added difficulty in finding the finish for Ward.

Going an undefeated 4-0 in 2006, Ward starts the year off right with her first win in 2007 — and a nice shiny belt to take home with her.

Historic, First Ever, State Sanctioned All Girls Caged Match:

"FATAL FEMMES" CARD ON FEB. 17 IN LOS ANGELES PITS TOP AMERICAN MUSCLE VS. JAPAN CHAMPS
***
Emerging "Mixed Martial Arts" Sport Said To Be USA's Fastest Growing Spectator Attraction Among Young Men

(Los Angeles, Calif., Feb. 6, 2007)---It's not your daddy's old school mud wrestling that's a draw these days for men, 18-34, but all female caged fighting that 's generating crowds and TV ratings, especially at testosterone driven Spike TV.

The first-ever, state sanctioned all female MMA (mixed martial arts) "caged fighting" card, featuring fighters from the U.S., Japan and Mexico, will take place Sat., Feb. 17, at the Japan America Theater in downtown Los Angeles.

Titled "Fatal Femmes Fighting" (www.fatalfemmesfighting.com) and presented by J.I.M.M., LLC, the event features lightweight, flyweight and middleweight match ups for a total of eight fights. Some of the sport's hottest talents, including the USA's Lisa Ward and Japan's Masako Yoshida, will be on hand, doing battle in the night's most anticipated bout.

A.J. Benza, current host of "High Stakes Poker," will help announce the event and provide color commentary.

Promoter Eddy Millis calls the Feb. 17 event "an historic moment for a sport that's just beginning its ascension."

"Unlike pro wrestling, these are real fighters going toe to toe for championship titles," he adds.

Sixteen of the sport's best exponents will fill out the Saturday night card, including Latina Jessica Pené.

Featured on numerous national news shows, such as "60 Minutes," caged fighting draws more cable pay per views buys these days than conventional boxing and its individual live events have grossed as much as $5 million each.

Tickets, priced at $45, $75 and $95 are on sale at Etix.com, at www.fatalfemmesfighting.com or by calling 1-877-FFF-9381.
