MIND YOUR P's and Q's

Meaning- Behave Properly

Origin- Comes from the early pub days when beer and ale was served in pint and quart containers. The tab was kept on a chalkboard used to count the pints and quarts consumed. To watch your Ps and Qs is to control your alcoholic intake and behavior.

What It Means To Me-
Is it me or is it easier to down beer in the summertime?
I am pretty sure there is nothing better in the evening than a nice cold Hefeweizen or Wheat Beer (Miller High Life is kind of good too.)
I have been doing carpentry work outside in the hot hot hot weather, and now I get it.
Whenever you see construction workers or carpenters in their 40s and 50s they always have beer bellys. There is just something that makes beer and powertools sound like a good idea. I don't make the rules.
I guess I better mind my p's and q's before I am 40 and up on a roof with a circular saw.

COOK WITH GAS

Meaning- to be working fast, getting things done or as ELO says... Takin' Care Of Business

Origin- Although common place today, gas stoves have not always been the norm. Gas stoves started to be available in the 1800's, and until that time wood stoves were the standard.

Now you're "cooking with gas" comes from an old advertisement for gas stoves. The phrase suggests that gas is faster, easier, cleaner, better than cooking with wood.

What it means to me- I have a friend that I helped lay a Bamboo floor for last week. He has a twelve sided house up at lake Hartwell. TWELVE SIDED HOUSE!!!!! I have laid floors in my time, but this place is like squaring a circle. We had a good time and busted it out in 3 days. Three very long days. He kept using the phrase "WE ARE COOKING WITH GAS!!!" so this idiom spoke to me this time.
A funny thing happened while I was there...
At one point, my friend made us burgers on the grill. I was really tired and hungry at this point. I got my bun all condimented up and ready for the burger. I sit down and commence devouring my sandwich only to almost finish without ever putting the actual burger on the bread.
I was really tired. The funny thing was was that my friend kept talking about how lean the meat was and I kept agreeing with him even though I wasn't eating it.

FOR THE LOVE OF PETE!!!

MEANING- "I am frustrated with this situation!!!"

ORIGIN- This phrase and phrases like "for Pete's sake" are euphemisms for the phrases "for the love of God/Christ" or "for God's/Christ's sake" and hail from a time when those phases were considered blasphemous. Nowadays phrases like "for the love of God" are commonly used, but the euphemisms are still used.

Why Pete? Most likely it is a reference to the catholic Saint Peter.

What it means to me- Yesterday, I woke up a little later than usual because my family was out of town for the night. It was one of those eerie days where everything just seemed weird. I remember on my way to Lowe's I thought to my self for some reason..."I am sure glad I have enough money for bills this month, I can't believe nothing has happened like my car breaking down or something."

So, I go on about my day, I am attempting to find items that no one carries to finish a few minor repair jobs. I go from store to store to store to store, getting on the loop and driving around in the 65mph range.

Finally, I am ending my search and going to my shop to do some prep work.

I pull up in the driveway, and BAM!!!! CRASH!!! CLANK!!!!

whatever part of the car that holds the wheel on, broke!!!!!

can you believe it?

FOR THE LOVE OF PETE!!!! NOW I GOTTA DEAL WITH THIS.

as you all know, you gotta call AAA, get a tow, and then wait to hear the ghastly repair bill. Just  as soon as you get ahead, something always happens.

them's the breaks.

A BURNT CHILD DREADS THE FIRE

MEANING- One does not repeat a learnt lesson.

ORIGIN- Very similar in meaning to another proverb, "Once bitten, twice shy," today's proverb is an old one. It appeared in English literature as early as 1320, in "The Proverbs of Hendyng." Another proverb, which is similar, comes from the French: "A scalded dog fears cold water" carries an even stronger message; that those who have experienced a great deal of difficulty or pain will not only avoid it in the future, but will be afraid even where there is no cause.

Other languages also have like proverbs, such as, "One bitten by a serpent is afraid of a rope's end" (Jewish), "A man who has received a beating with a firebrand runs away at the sight of a firefly" (Singhalese), and "A dog which has been beaten with a stick fears its own shadow" (Italian).

What It means to me- Today a funny thing happened... Basil started doing this thing where he kind of says a phrase that resembles "I wanna go down." Which means he wants to literally get down and crawl around. We were at this neighborhood school event... you know cake walks, fried chicken and silent auctions. The whole thing was held on the school's blacktop. So, Basil just kept saying "Wanna go down, wanna go down." But with Georgia's weather, the blacktop was very hot. But I put him down anyways. He did this hilarious almost dancing between his hands. He would lift one hand up and put the other down and then rapidly switch to the other. This movement resembled those Russian dances when they switch legs in a croutching position. It was kind of mean, but hilarious. So maybe when B. sees black concrete in the summer weather we would have learned his lesson. That is all what parenting is about. Lessons learnt.

IDLE HANDS ARE THE DEVIL'S TOOLS

MEANING- Mischief comes about with bordedom

ORIGIN- "Idleness is the root of mischief. This maxim has been traced back to Chaucer's 'Tale of Melibee' (c. 1386). First attested in the United States in 'Collections' (1808). The proverb is found in varying forms: Satan has some mischief for idle hands to do; The devil finds work (or mischief) for idle hands to do." From "Random House Dictionary of Popular Proverbs and Sayings" by Gregory Y. Titelman (Random House, New York, 1996).

Another way of phrasing it, to stay out of trouble: PUT YOUR HANDS TO WORK AND HEARTS TO GOD - Philosophy of Ann Lee, "Mother Ann," founder of United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, known as the Shakers.

WHAT IT MEANS TO ME- As you may have noticed, I haven't been able to post a new blog for about a week or so. I tell you, I have been busy indeed. These hands have not been idle. Starting Monday, I worked all morning, and then went to the Wilco show here in Athens. Tuesday, I started to finish some carpentry work all day, and then came home and worked on my new tool shed. Wednesday, I worked all day for one of my clients, had band practice and then bartended until 12 am. Thursday, I worked all day, and then My wife had a yoga class that evening, so I was on baby duty. (oh, and also injured my eye somehow, no worries, I am fine now.)

Friday, finished my clients apartment, went into bar tend at 6, got home @ 1am.

Saturday, somewhat of a relaxing day, but ran errands with Basil, came home, went to work at 6, got home at 1 am.

Sunday, Wife's yoga class again (baby duty for me). Ate lunch, went to work at 4 until 12 am. Now here I am. I have about 2 hrs before I start this week that will be just like last.

crazy? or fun? I don't know.

ABSENCE MAKES THE HEART GROW FONDER

Meaning- when you are away from someone you love, their absence makes you remember how much you love having that person/persons around.

Origin- In 1604, Shakespeare echoed this sentiment in "Othello" (Act 1, scene ii), when Desdemona confessed, "I dote upon his very absence." James Howell, in "Familiar Letters" (1650) says that, "Distance sometimes endears friendship, and absence sweeteneth it."

There are other references to this proverb in literature, but it was originally the first line of an anonymous poem which appeared in Davison's "Poetical Rhapsody" in 1602.

What it means to me-
Amanda and Basil went to Charleston this weekend. They left Thursday and are coming back today. It has seemed like an eternity. I miss them sooooo much.
Now, I haven't been sitting around eating hot-pockets and watching episodes of Golden Girls whilst occassionally crying over something not that bittersweet.
I have been keeping busy working on building my new garden shed, and playing Mr. Fix-it around the house. But every once and awhile, I will stop and realize that they aren't gonna be home soon. They aren't just going to the grocery store and coming back.
Some would think that I finally have a chance to sleep in. But that didn't happen either.
Over sleep, and alone time, I want family time.

BUSTING YOUR CHOPS

Meaning- to harass

Origin- When mutton chops and/or sideburns in fashion, it referred to being hit in the face, or slapped on the side of the face near your sideburns.

What it Means To Me- as I have mentioned, I bar tend. My boss is a really funny guy who likes to bust my chops. One time, he walked up behind me while I was talking about how cool stainless steel martini shakers are because they don't hold smells of previous drinks. He said something along the lines of..." what are you Rain Man?" and I quickly answered back in a silly voice...
"What does purple smell like?"
In retrospect, I should have done my best Rain Man impression and put my head on his shoulder.

HIGHWAY ROBBERY

Meaning- an extremely ridiculous charge for goods or services

Origin- It comes from Shakespeare's days when people used to be robbed by armed men in transit. It was a little easier in horse drawn buggies.
now it just refers to the people that overprice things as thugs (essentially).

What it Means To Me-
I have made a promise to myself to get on a regular plan of figuring out cheaper car insurance and paying off credit cards. With today's economy, money is definatley tight.
So, I have been using Safe Auto for many of years for car insurance. I thought maybe If I went to my home insurance provider, I could get a better deal. IT"S TRUE, THEY AREN"T KIDDING.
S.A. charges me around $180 a month for two cars. The other company is charging me about $90. Unbelievable. I can't believe I didn't do this sooner. So, if you are on one of these 'fly by night' companys. Look around, because they are definatley commiting Highway Robbery.

SPITTING IMAGE

Meaning- to look exactly alike

Origin- it derives from "Spit and Image" which derives from the phrase
"Spirit and Image" which gives the idea of not only looking exactly like someone but also acting like someone.

What it Means To Me- Have you seen my Son????
Everyone thinks that he is the spitting image of me, and there are quite a few attributes that resemble me (the hair mostly). But as he gets older, his skin has turned darker like his mom.
And also, his eyes are squinty like his mom's.
So, although at first glance he looks like the Spitting Image of me. He is starting to look like Momma.
Go to my Facebook page to see a hilarious video of him.

BUSMAN'S HOLIDAY

Meaning- spending all of your free time doing what you do when you work.

Origin- City buses used to run with horses attached to buggies pulling people around before we had the fabulous automobile.
When the bus owner/regular driver would have a day off, he would have a sub. More often than not, he would ride his own bus just to make sure the horse is getting taken care of by the sub.

What it Means To Me-
I kind of have days off every once and again. As I have fore-mentioned, I do carpentry work and bar tend to make money to afford to be a musician/person with a dream. I had a day off yesterday and spent time making up syrups for cocktail ideas. On other days off, I have decided to build a garden shed as well as fix up my other shed into a music space.
So, basically everyday I have off, I am gonna be working.
good times. I love overdoing it don't you?

On a positive note, the sheds and cocktails are gonna be pretty badass!!!
