We're big in Dawson.

Amazon has a pretty darn good selection of music to download. And now it even includes everybody's favorite lost luggage song!

Flashback music from the Eighties at tomorrow's prices today! Even a free download of the jaunty tune The Road Song....

I hope everyone survived Turkey Day and the requisite family visits, football, your favorite Druncle and filter meats. "Oh no, I really like gravy with giblets."

We thoroughly enjoyed our Thanksgiving evening with some friends from the old days and tunes from everybody's favorite polka band, Brave Combo. The boys from Denton were playing at the Marquee- otherwise known as the red door down on Main Street. We had a great time and enjoyed seeing several cronies.

Carl (the bravest of the combo) took a moment 'tween changing guitars to relate some old memories from his first visit to seek out gigs in Tulsa. It was fun to hear his recollections of things like the Bleu Grotto, Jerry's Restaurant (and the waitress Lucille) and the creepy World Museum (soon to be demolished).

It was a great time as always. Hokey pokie! Here's wishing all of you a great holiday.

Last week I was contacted by Mark Brown from the Tulsa World (no relation) who is working on a story about the golden age of radio in Tulsa. Namely, the zebra-striped era of KTOW.

In the Nineties this minor AM country station was commandeered in the name of alternative music by Tim Barazza (sic?) and company. Later an FM transmitter came online and the upstart station started showing up on the ratings. Something the established players never imagined would happen. It was this unique time and place that is the subject of the forthcoming newspaper article.

It had been years since I'd thought much about KTOW and the phenomenon it wrought. I was never a DJ, but did have fun with a short-lived show on Sunday nights called Night Light. Bowe and I would read weird crap from the newspaper, run spoof commercials for a variety of fictitious local businesses and take live phone calls from listerners. My favorite memory of that was the night we played Battleship over the air. It was amazing how many people called that had never played Battleship! Not surprisingly we won.

I was able to provide Mark contact info for a few of the personalities associated with KTOW. Some were personal friends- like Robert Bowe (Robb on the Radio), Chris Hale (Caesar Vitalis), Tony Dapolito (Sabu), Carole Thompson (Carol Dane) and Tony Mills (Tony Too). Others were acquaintances that I didn't really know all that well- Sanchez, Linda Berg (Taylor Chance), Joe Stone, etc. There were others I may not remember... sorry!

In case you have a KTOW story to share, or know how to contact some of the other DJs, you can reach roving reporter, Mark Brown at the Tulsa World or

****UPDATE****
Hah!

Like magic is this Internet thing- no sooner do I mention a long-ago radio station then suddenly it appears on My Space!

Join me in befriending this blast from the alternative music past...

Sometimes I think My Space is a huge waste of time. Nothing more than a vacuum of cyber squatters and teenage angst.

But once in a while it serves a valuable purpose. Like reconnecting old friends. For instance, in the just the last two weeks two siblings of former Insects have contacted me through this site.

File this under "Where are they now?"

In my spare time I manage a web site for cool places to ride motorcycles. It's called Places 2 Ride and is at www.places2ride.com. Our latest new features are adding short video clips about some of the listings. Enjoy.

I've posted a few fun and silly videos everyone might enjoy.

You might recognize a few Tulsa faces- like Dart and Randy from Square Force. A couple of these were even shown at the Tulsa Overground Film Festival.

Enjoy!

The show for Mikel Automatic at Unit D was a fitting tribute. What a great gig!

It was really a blast seeing all those faces from the past.

There will be a tribute show this Saturday in honor of the late, great Mikel Automatic. It's going to be at Unit D on West 41st Street....

In 1984 the Insects appeared on a local television show produced by KTUL and KMOD in Tulsa. "Night Shift" was a late night show featuring music videos, sketch comedy and local musicians. The hosts were Gregg Roach and Jeanne Tripplehorn (although Jeanne wasn't in Tulsa for this particular episode).

We were asked to play 3 songs. But they didn't realize most of our songs were 3 minutes or less. So we paired them up and eventually played five songs on the show.

I've posted all the clips on my personal blog.

The videos include some great crowd shots that's like a who's who of the local new wave scene in Tulsa. Watch closely and you'll see Mikel Automatic, Dave Lebow, Sandra Barnett, Buck Miller, Chris Heckenkemper and many, many more.

Enjoy!
