Last Orphanage Session for the year

On the 21st of this month we will hold the very last Orphanage Session for the year. In our humble opinion it's been a great year full of awesome music and amazing moments. For this reason, we'd like to extend a big thank you to anyone who has come to any session this year - your participation makes all our work worthwhile.
We'd also like to extend you an invitation to everyone out there to join us for this last session. It's an opportunity to celebrate everything that's happened and end the year on a high note.
To that end we're looking forward to having Ronni Rae Rivers join us as our guest. Ronni is a strong songwriter and a talented fiddle player too. Expect her to rock the house.

Hi folks,
Thanks to all those who came to see The Wildes last month. You can see some photos of the night from our friend Geoff McKeown on our facebook page at...
www.facebook.com/pages/Dear-Orphans/121194417338
If you're not a fan on facebook then please become one.
But for now here's what's coming up soon.
Ange Takats at The Orphanage
Ange TakatsThis months guest at The Orphanage Sessions is Ange Takats. Ange comes to us from the Sunshine Coast in QLD having grown up in Sydney, which she left to live and work in Thailand as a foreign correspondent. Whilst there she joined a folk rock band of Thai musicians who'd grown up listening to hippie music brought in to the country by American soldiers during the Vietnam war. Ange has an album called Aniseed Tea which was featured as the album of the week on Radio National's breakfast show.
This is our second last Orphanage Session for the year and it promises to be a great night as always. The Orphanage Sessions will continue next year, but will be on less often so we can tour our new album round the country. For this reason, we encourage everyone to try and make it to the next two sessions to finish the year in style.
The gig is this Saturday!

Current mood: thoughtful

Just prior to the first gig we ever played we had to come up with a
name for the band. At the time we'd been listening to Buddy and Julie
Miller's version of a Mark Heard song called "The Orphans of God".
Hence was coined the name "The Orphans". It's a good name that we've
always liked because it conjures images of lonesomeness that suits the
music we try to make.
However... enter the reality of the music business. We've since
discovered that the name "The Orphans" is claimed by several other
bands worldwide. These include a punk band from New Jersey as well as
"Wisconsin's number one cover band."
So after much soul searching we are changing our name. Our new name
will be "Dear orphans," and that will also be the name of our upcoming,
debut album. We think its close to the old name and that it both
captures and builds upon the feeling of the old name.
Over the next few months we'll be updating and changing things to
reflect the change. In the meantime expect to see both "The Orphans"
and "Dear orphans," around the place. And when you do remember that
they're both us.

#5 Elsen Price
This Saturday The Orphans will be joined on stage by top gun double
bass player Elsen Price. Get ready for some serious bottom end.
#4 Racz 'n Waters
Every guest we get to play, we get because we've heard them play and we
believe they are something extra special that will help make the night
not just a good gig, but a great one. These girls are no exception and
if you dig awesome sounding three part harmonies then don't miss this
one.
#3 Atmosphere, atmosphere, atmosphere
We chose the Mars Hill Cafe for The Orphanage Sessions because it has a
brilliant, intimate performance space. This is not a dingy pub with
drunk old men, nor is it a crowded restaurant with some muso's jammed
in a corner playing background music. The dedicated performance space
is upstairs with a stage, dedicated PA and the room features old
lounges as well as tables and chairs at the back of the room. It's like
The Basement or The Vanguard, but on a smaller scale.
#2 Yummy food and ethical Brazilian coffee
The cafe does good, yummy food if you're feeling hungry as well as
having coffee and cakes. The coffee is their own brand of ethical
coffee which they've imported from Brazil. If you're feeling brave then
go downstairs and ask Mohawk (the barista) for a "Mohawk". BJ Barker
from The Huckleberry Swedes raved about this coffee months after their
gig with us.
#1 Support live music
Everyone will have read about how sales of CD's are down and that the
music industry is suffering. The major labels are no longer investing
in new talent and local musicians need to make that investment
themselves. Being a muso, recording and releasing a CD, playing gigs
generally costs musicians money to do. Some musicians spend tens of
thousands of dollars that they never recoup. This puts new music and
especially live music at risk.
One of our aims with The Orphanage Sessions is to run them in a way
that we can pay our guests a fair amount so that they can cover their
costs of playing and to encourage them to keep making and playing music
- this is why we have a door charge. We can only do this when people
like yourselves come along and in doing so we hope we can give
something back to you in the form of a memorable night.
If you agree with what I'm saying then feel free to post a link to this note so that others can see it.
If you want to come along and hear some great music on Saturday night, or invite others, then check out the event at:

Hi everybody,
Racz 'n Waters return to The Orphanage This August, we're proud to welcome back to
The Orphanage the dynamic trio of Karen Ann Waters and Tahlia and
Ingrid Racz, otherwise known as Racz 'n Waters.
Hailing from the central coast with their own cheeky brand of girl
power folk, these girls were our guests last year and we had to have
them back. Driving the blunt force of the band with her punchy guitar
rhythms is Karen Anne Waters (Brassy Brunette) who combines with Ingrid
Racz ( Blossoming Blonde) - the mistress of percussion with her Djembe
and Irish Bodhran - and sister Tahlia Racz (Raunchy Redhead) who twangs
the merry mandolin with sprinkles of fire. Together they storm the
stage with fierce harmonies, cheeky lyrics and a whole lot of girl
power.
Their unique brand of country meets folk is soon to be released on
their debut album and was lovingly captured by Karl Broadie in the
producers chair. We love these girls and the special atmosphere they
bring to any night they play at The Orphanage Sessions.
The details are as follows: The Orphanage Sessions: Racz 'n Waters + The Orphans

Karl Broadie returns to The Orphanage this monthScottish troubadour come Aussie songwriter Karl Broadie has a new album out shortly. It's real and raw and he's our guest at the next Orphanage Session. Hailing from Edinburgh Karl was born into a family of philosophers, artists and free thinkers. It was music, however, that fired Karl into action when he moved to London and worked in various recording studios as an assistant engineer, whilst playing bass in a funk bands in his spare time. Some years later he found himself living in Australia and recording a demo in a shed at Tempe underneath the flight path. That demo, became an album called Nowhere Now Here and despite it's humble beginnings was a hit worldwide. The title track from his second album Black Crow Calling was voted by Tom Waites and a panel of other judges as the Americana song of the year in the International Song Contest the year of it's release. His third album was the well received One Million Emeralds produced here in Sydney by Matt Fells. Since then he's gone to America on a songwriter tour and slept on Patti Griffin's lounge. It was here he met one of Patti's guitarist's, Craig Ross, who flew out to Australia last November to produce Karls next album - Branches. We recently engaged Karl to produce our debut album, and we can't wait to have him as our guest at this month's Orphanage Session. Read more about Broadie at the Orphanage Sessions website - www.theorphans.com.au/theorphanage.
Karl Broadie appears with The Orphans at The Orphanage Session at 8.30pm on Saturday 18th April at the Mars Hill Café. Tickets are available at the door for $15.

Hi everyone and welcome to The Orphans March newsletter. Got a few exciting things to talk about including the next Orphanage Session with Lucie Thorne and a new gig out Richmond way.
Lucie Thorne our guest at the next Orphanage Session
Lucie Thorne is our guest at the next Orphanage Session bringing her own style of gritty rock 'n roll meets original dark-folk.
Lucie hails from the Bega Valley and has just released a new album called Black Across The Field. Martyn Jones from Rhythms magazine recently reviewed the album saying...
“Without exaggeration Black Across The Field is as good as anything I’ve heard this year… Growling with warm tube overdrive, stinging like Neil Young… this is a diverse, profound album… with nuances subtle and breathtaking.”
We stumbled across Lucie at one of The Yearlings gigs and just had to have her come play with us. We called her up and she graciously accepted.
You can read more about Lucie at The Orphanage Sessions website at...
www.theorphans.com.au/theorphanage The full details for the gig are...

We also have an unconfirmed gig at The Petersham Bowling Club on the evening of Friday 9th of January. Keep an eye on the myspace for confirmation of this gig once it arrives.
In the meantime here's the full details for both gigs...

Bring on 2009
We're looking forward to 2009 and the continuation of The Orphanage Sessions. Expect a full announcement of the line up in our January newsletter, but without giving too much information away I can confirm February's guest will be... The Blues Preachers. Stay tuned for more info soon and check out The Orphanage Sessions website at www.theorphans.com.au/theorphanage. And thanks to Natasha David for writing a review of The Huckleberry Swedes gig at The Orphanage (which you can also read on the website).
We can also let you know that we are in the final stages of mixing The Orphans debut album. It's sounding pretty good so far and we're hoping we can deliver something that everyone will enjoy. There's much still to do before it's officially released, but stay tuned and we'll certainly let you know.
We've also got something else in the pipeline to do with a round, shiny things, but that's top secret for now. We'll let you know when there's more to tell.
Thanks again for your support of The Orphans and also original, live music during 2008. We certainly do appreciate it, as it gives us the opportunity to do what we enjoy and in doing so, hopefully, share that joy with others. We look forward to seeing you all at more gigs in the future.
