Wow!!! :-D :-D :-D
What an incredible weekend I just had! First of all, huge thanks to everyone who participated in the voting process for the Detroit Music Awards for your support. I was so honored and humbled to be a part of this event and so proud that my band was there with me -- Mike, Ben, Nate...I love you guys and I love your music.
I picked up awards for Outstanding Jazz Vocalist, Outstanding Jazz Composer (which I cannot accept without giving such high praise to my incredible collaborator/musical director/pianist, Mike Jellick -- the baddest cat I know) and Outstanding Jazz Recording for our debut "Beginning To See The Light".
Thank you all SO much from the bottom of my heart. I work harder and harder each day because of you.
So, in other news, we've been in the studio all week recording some "mainstream sounding" tunes I've been writing with another dear friend and wonderful musician, Sam Barsh -- check him out, he's an incredible talent. And, we already have dates in the studio to lay down some of the new arrangements with the quartet, so keep your eyes and ears peeled!!!!
We have several tour dates in the making, so look out for the JPQ coming to a city near you. We'll be in Chicago this weekend, and then I go to San Diego to play a benefit for my best friend who passed away this past November (please see blog on Seany Foundation) with a ridiculous pianist and one of my all time favorite musicians, Geoffrey Keezer. If you're in the Southern California area -- come on out and support a great cause and a fun night of music.
Keep up the support and thanks so much once again. Can't wait for the next step...
All love, Jesse

My best friend in the entire world recently passed away after years of battling a rare form of soft tissue bone cancer, Ewings Sarcoma. In an effort to help raise money, I asked his parents to write something for me to post on a blog about the Seany Foundation that was started in his honor. Your donation would mean a lot to both his family and me not to mention all the children around the world suffering with this horrible disease. I love you Seany and you will always be in my heart.
Sean fiercely fought Ewings Sarcoma, a rare pediatric cancer, for almost 7 years. Through countless disappointments and setbacks, his courage never waned; his "will" to survive never faltered. He lived his life in the best way he could, trying to set an example and be a voice for other young "survivors" along the way. Sean died fighting his unrelenting disease, but left a legacy to others, to never give up. He endured countless treatments and procedures, some never attempted by others with Ewing's; he was a brave pioneer. To carry on this legacy, Sean's family has started The Seany foundation. The money raised will fund a "research chair" in his honor, at University of California San Diego's Moores Cancer Center. Pediatric sarcomas are deadly but rare, hence, under funded. The research will all be focused on these heartbreaking childhood diseases, especially Ewing's Sarcoma.
Your support is deeply appreciated. Please make your contributions to: The Seany Foundation, 7567 La Jolla Blvd., La Jolla, California, 92037. mjrobins27@gmail.com.

I recently did a featurette on an original tune called Lovesick that I cowrote with a fine musician named Jeremy Ragsdale and coproduced with Mikey J (it ended up on the album). Thanks to Jazzstage Productions for supporting jazz music with emphasis on the DETROIT jazz scene. You guys are rockin and I truely appreciate it! Check out the podcast to hear me talk a bit about the tune. I am a real ham, what can I say:?

Long time no talk. I know, I have been quite lackadaisical about keeping you in the loop -- so busy lately with so many exciting things. Since the Detroit Music Awards (still have to pinch myself about that sometimes) the CD has been mixed, mastered, sequenced, packaged, and ready to be released to YOU on August 1st via CD Baby (I will keep you posted with more details). We put it out there for the first time, as a sort of pre-release, this past weekend at the Birmingham Jazz Fest. It was quite the day -- not only did I release my first-ever CD, but I opened for a remarkable and extremely influential progressive jazz group that I have been following for quite some time, the Yellowjackets. It was an amazing experience for me! Both Mikey J and Ben Williams are in Aspen with Christina McBride, Geoff Keezer, Ron Blake and the likes for the Jazz Aspen snowmass (miss you gentleman, but I'm proud of you), so thanks to John Nam (piano) and Dave Rosin (bass) for subbing in the weekly festivities with me, and for sounding so killing (and thanks to Nate as always). I would have been loony in the midst of this past week's mayhem without your brilliance!
To all you avid blog readers, mark your calendars because August 1st is the day to take a little piece of my music home with you. Side note, I know some of you were expecting me to be on Fox 2 News morning show last Thursday (the same day we did Mitch Albom show), but we postponed the date to this upcoming Thursday at 8 a.m. and yes -- the group will be performing (you'll just have to tune in to find out what). Besides all the neat press that has been happening, we are having our official CD release party next Saturday at Centaur Bar in Detroit (behind the fox theater, http://centaurbar.com/index.html). Doors open at 9 and there is no cover. The whole band will be there and will be performing. And, we get to all celebrate together. I can't wait! Hope to see you there.
And what's next? I'm hoping this album is going to open many more doors! I've already been creating new music, talking about new arrangements, planning our next session in the studio, discussing tour possibilities... I'm looking forward to what's to come! Until then, keep checking for the latest updates. Thanks for all your sweet comments/messages/and support.
And with that, I'm off to practice my banjo (not really, I don't even really play the banjo)
kisses,
Jesse

Current mood: excited
I am still in shock that I received a Detroit Music Award last night for Outstanding Jazz Vocal. WOW! And, I have had such a crazy week (my grandma died and so it has been more mayhem than usual in the Palter household) so I was a little late to awards show and missed a chance to do an acceptance speech (I guess fashionably late is sooooo last year, eh?) So, I want to say some words on this blog for those that just so happen to take the time to read.
To everyone that participated in the voting -- thank you times a bajillion for the support. This really means a lot to me! I am going to place it right downstairs as a reminder to keep working harder and harder every day!!
Thanks to Mike Jellick, Nate Winn and Ben Williams. You guys teach me so much every time we step on the bandstand together and I am so proud of your talents. I cant wait to spread the music we are making!
Thanks to my family. I love you and I am so lucky to have you! I dedicate this to you!
Thanks to Howard Hertz for believing and investing in my project. I know that this is a great team and I am so excited for what is to come! Lets do this!
All the musicians in Detroit that have allowed me to sit in and learn from their talents, to all the club-owners who are booking the quartet -- it has and will continue to pay off. Thanks for passing on the tradition of this music. And, to everyone who comes out to the shows and supports -- you make me want to play harder!
I am sooo happy!
So much love,
Jesse
