Well friends, once again, the cat is out of the bag - or should we say
the dog out of the hutch!  This Friday night, March 27, ABC's Nightline
will be investigating puppy mills!

ABC Correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi and investigators from Nightline travel
the byways and back roads of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania - visiting
numerous puppy mills and filming Main Line Animal Rescue's volunteers as
they rescue breeding dogs and puppies from Lancaster County's notorious
Amish commercial breeding facilities.

This promises to be a very special program.  If you are involved in
rescue, advocate on behalf of the millions of puppy mill dogs interned
in our nation's commercial dog breeding facilities, or if you just
simply love animals, you will not want to miss this.

Sharyn Alfonsi interviewed, on camera, an Amish breeder while touring
his facility - a first for network television.  With approximately 500
dogs housed on his property, this commercial breeder speaks openly about
an industry cloaked in secrecy and suspicion - the cruel factory farming
of man's best friend.

PLEASE tell your friends, your family, your coworkers - ABC Nightline
investigates puppy mills - this Friday at 11:35 pm (Eastern Standard
Time).  Please take the time to forward this to all the rescues,
shelters, and legislators in your area.

It has been almost one year since Oprah's puppy mill show aired.  That
program received the highest viewer response of any Oprah Show in years.
Now we need to spread the word about this very special Nightline.  Only
by educating as many people as we can, will we be able to help these
animals.  And after you watch the program, please don't hesitate to
contact ABC and Nightline to thank them for casting such a strong light
on the plight of our nation's puppy mill dogs.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />....

Petland Faces Class Action Lawsuit for Peddling Unhealthy Puppy Mill Dogs in at Least 20 States....

 ....

PHOENIX (March 17, 2009) — Members of The Humane Society of the United States and other consumers filed a class action lawsuit alleging that Petland, Inc. and the Hunte Corporation are conspiring to sell unhealthy puppy mill puppies to unsuspecting consumers in numerous states. Petland is the nation’s largest chain of pet stores that sells puppy mill dogs and Hunte is one of the country’s largest distributors of factory-produced puppies.....

 ....

The lawsuit, filed in federal district court in Phoenix late Monday, alleges that Petland and Hunte violated federal law and numerous state consumer protection laws by misleading thousands of consumers across the country into believing that the puppies sold in Petland stores are healthy and come from high-quality breeders. Many of the puppies sold by Petland come either directly from puppy mills or puppy brokers such as Hunte, which operates as a middleman between the mills and Petland’s retail stores. ....

 ....

“Unscrupulous dog dealers like Petland and Hunte reap massive profits by pushing unhealthy puppies on well-intentioned dog-lovers who would never knowingly buy a puppy mill dog,” said Jonathan Lovvorn, vice president & chief counsel for Animal Protection Litigation at The HSUS. “Families often bear the great expense of veterinary treatment for sick and unhealthy dogs, or the terrible anguish of losing a beloved family pet. This industry has been systematically lying to consumers for years about the source of the dogs they sell, and it’s long past time for a reckoning.” ....

 ....

The class action lawsuit is the result of many months of investigative and legal research, and comes after an eight-month investigation into Petland stores by The HSUS that demonstrated a direct link between multiple Petland stores and unscrupulous puppy mills. Numerous other reports have also surfaced of Petland’s allegedly deceptive sales practices, including the marketing and sale of puppies with life-threatening genetic defects and highly contagious parasitic and viral infections. ....

 ....

The 34-page complaint includes numerous examples of sick or dying puppies that Petland sold, including: ....

 ....

  • Mainerd, a Boston terrier, was diagnosed with a congenital spinal condition. Some of her vertebrae have not formed completely while others have fused together causing tissue to grow underneath along with possible nerve damage. Mainerd is now receiving steroid treatments for her ailments and may require expensive surgery.....
  • Minchy, a miniature pinscher, was sold by Petland at 10 weeks old. He was immediately diagnosed with coccidian, an intestinal parasite that causes diarrhea and weight loss. Minchy was also diagnosed with an inherited disorder, Progressive Retinal Atrophy, which will ultimately lead to permanent blindness.....
  • Tucker was sold at four months old. The bloodhound puppy experienced severe separation anxiety and various health problems before developing orbital cancer at only 7 months of age. ....
  • Patrick, a Pomeranian puppy, was sold at three months old. He suffered from diarrhea and vomiting shortly after arriving at his new home. At 11 months old, Patrick was diagnosed with a genetic disorder, dual luxating patellas, which will require expensive surgery on both of his knees to correct.....

 ....

Puppy mills are mass breeding operations where the health of dogs is disregarded in order to maintain a low overhead and maximize profits. The dogs are often kept in wire cages, stacked on top of each other, with no exercise, socialization, veterinary care, or loving human interaction. They are treated not like family pets, but like a cash crop.  Petland denies it supports these substandard breeding facilities, and claims to follow “Humane Care Guidelines” developed in conjunction with the USDA.  However, USDA recently informed HSUS in writing that it has no record of any such guidelines. ....
The class plaintiffs are being represented in the case by Saltz Mongeluzzi Barrett & Bendesky, PC; Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro, LLC; Garen Meguerian, Esq. and lawyers in The HSUS’s Animal Protection Litigation section. The suit requests a jury trial on behalf of the consumer class plaintiffs, and seeks reimbursement of the puppies’ purchase price along with compensation for all related monetary damages for the class members.....

YOU KNOW YOU'VE BEEN DOING RESCUE TOO LONG When:

You have a mental list of people you'd like to spay, neuter, or euthanize.
You stopped at a house with a "Free Puppies"sign in the yard to have an educational "chat," and your kids had to post your bail
Running out of paper towels is a household crisis.
You not only KNOW all the characteristics of a good stool, you discuss them at dinner.
Your checks have messages on them like "Subtract Two Testicles For Every Four Feet."
You have a bumper sticker that reads "My German Shepherd Is Smarter Than Your Graduate Student".
You secretly wonder about such things as how animals can manage without wiping.
You absentmindedly pat people on the head or scratch them behind their ears.
Given the choice of having your teeth cleaned or their teeth cleaned, they get their teeth cleaned.
You not only allow pets on the couch, guests have to sit on the floor because the dog has "territorial issues".
Your spouse missed the final game of the World Series because the cat wanted to watch his favorite video, "Birds of North America"
Anytime the animal appears lethargic, you go on-line and investigate Vetmed websites, pose questions to your address book and on e-lists, and by the time you digest all the information and field the correspondence, the animal has torn out the window
screens and left something disgusting in your  favorite pair of shoes.
Your chat room handle is "Queen of Spayeds".
You and your vet are on a first name basis and he genuflects when you enter the waiting room. His daughter at Harvard refers to you as "Auntie".
You needed a prescription to recover from "Old Yeller".
You've forwarded more warnings about the dangers of chocolate, onions, and mistletoe than the National Center for Disease Control has issued about anthrax and smallpox.
You wear white year 'round, not because you are flaunting a fashion law or belong to a religious sect but because it is bleachable.
By the time you investigate different flea control products, their advantages and potential risks, natural versus chemical methods, and study the life cycle of the flea, any fleas have died of old age.
You tell your children to "heel!" in a grocery store.
For relaxation, you went mall hopping with your girlfriends. Your eyes Glazed over when you saw a sign in front of a pet shop, "20% Off All Puppies & Kittens," and you slapped three security guards before they got you safely contained in the manager's office.
People are still talking about your spay-neuter holiday greeting from last year, "Deck the Halls with Balls of Collies!"

A Letter from a Shelter Manager:

I think our society needs a huge " Wake-up" call.
As a shelter manager, I
am going to share a little insight with you all. ..a view from the
inside if you will.

First off, all of you breeders/sellers should be made to work in the
"back"
of an animal shelter for just one day.

Maybe if you saw the life drain from a few sad, lost, confused eyes,
you would change your mind about breeding and selling to people you
don't even know. That puppy you just sold will most likely end up in
my shelter when it's not a cute little puppy anymore.

So how would you feel if you knew that there's about a 90% chance that
dog will never walk out of the shelter it is going to be dumped at?
Purebred or not! About 50% of all of the dogs that are "owner
surrenders" or "strays"
that come into my shelter are purebred dogs.

The most common excuses I hear are:

"We are moving and we can't take our dog (or cat)." Really? Where are
you moving to that doesn't allow pets and why did you choose that
place instead of a pet friendly home?

Or they say "The dog got bigger than we thought it would."  How big
did you think a German Shepherd would get?

"We don't have time for her."  Really? I work a 10- 12 hour day and
still have time for my 6 dogs!

"She' s tearing up our yard."   How about
making her a p art of your family?

They always tell me: "We just don't want to have to stress about
finding a place for her we know he'll get adopted, she's a good dog."

Odds are your pet won't get adopted & how stressful do you think being
in a shelter is?  Well, let me tell you, your pet has 72 hours to find
a new family from the moment you drop it off. Sometimes a little
longer if the shelter isn't full and your dog manages to stay
completely healthy. If it sniffles, it dies.

Your pet will be confined to a small run/kennel in a room with about
25 other barking or crying animals. It will have to relieve itself
where it eats and sleeps.

It will be depressed and it will cry constantly for the family that
abandoned it.

If your pet is lucky, I will have enough volunteers in that day to
take him/her for a walk.  If I don't, your pet won't get any attention
besides having a bowl of food slid under the kennel door and the waste
sprayed out of its pen with a high-powered hose.

If your dog is big, black or any of the "Bully"
breeds (pit bull, rottie,
mastiff, etc) it was pretty much dead when you walked it through the
front door. Those dogs just don't get adopted.

It doesn't matter how 'sweet' or 'well behaved' they are. If your dog
doesn't get adopted within its 72 hours and the shelter is full, it
will be destroyed.

If the shelter isn't full and your dog is good enough, and of a
desirable enough breed it may get a stay of execution, but not for
long.

Most dogs get very kennel protective after about a week and are
destroyed for showing aggression. Even the sweetest dogs will turn in
this environment.

If your pet makes it over all of those hurdles chances are it will get
kennel cough or an upper respiratory infection and will be destroyed
because shelters just don't have the funds to pay for even a $100
treatment.

Here's a little euthanasia 101 for those of you that have never
witnessed a perfectly healthy, scared animal being "put-down".. ..

First, your pet will be taken from its kennel on a leash.
They always look
like they think they are going for a walk - happy, wagging their
tails.

Until, they get to "The Room", every one of them freak out and put the
brakes on when we get to the door. It must smell like death or they
can feel the sad souls that are left in there, it's strange, but it
happens with every one of them.

Your dog or cat will be restrained, held down by 1 or 2 vet techs
depending on the size and how freaked out they are.

Then a euthanasia tech or a vet will start the process.
They will find a
vein in the front leg and inject a lethal dose of the "pink stuff".

Hopefully your pet doesn't panic from being restrained and jerk. I've
seen the needles tear out of a leg and been covered with the resulting
blood and been deafened by the yelps and screams.

They all don't just "go to sleep", sometimes they spasm for a while,
gasp for air and defecate on themselves.

When it all ends, your pet's corpse will be stacked like firewood in a
large freezer in the back with all of the other animals that were
killed waiting to be picked up like garbage.

What happens next? Cremated? Taken to the dump? Rendered into pet
food?
You'll never know and it probably won't even cross your mind. It was
just an animal and you can always buy another one, right?

I hope that those of you that have read this are bawling your eyes out
and can't get the pictures out of your head I deal with everyday on
the way home from work.

I hate my job, I hate that it exists & I hate that it will always be
there unless you people make some changes and realize that the lives
you are affecting go much further than the pets you dump at a shelter.

Between 9 and 11 MILLION animals die every year in shelters and only
you can stop it. I do my best to save every life I can but rescues are
always full, and there are more animals coming in everyday than there
are homes.

My point to all of this: DON'T BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER PETS DIE!

Hate me if you want to. The truth hurts and reality is what it is.

I just hope I maybe changed one person's mind about breeding their
dog, taking their loving pet to a shelter, or buying a dog.

I hope that someone will walk into my shelter and say "I saw this and
it made me want to adopt." THAT WOULD MAKE IT WORTH IT!

Bailey is a Fur Angels Animal Sanctuary dog who was adopted to a wonderful family in Mokena, IL. On NYE, she was let outside to do her business under supervision and fireworks unexpectedly started up. Bailey got scared and bolted. She jumped over the fenced in yard and disappeared before anyone could grab her. The family and I have searched two hours for this dog. She has been nowhere to be found. She is a very sweet friendly dog, but easily scared, and when she's scared, she tends to try to find places to crawl under to hide. She has all of her vaccinations, is spayed and IS micro chipped which is registered to Fur Angels Animal Sanctuary.

She's a female dog, believed to be an American Staffordshire, possible doberman mix. Her mix is somewhat hard to determine. She's all black, with some white chest and white paws.

Her family lives in Mokena, IL close to 191st street. She may have wandered in surrounding towns.

Please spread the word about this dog. I can be contacted by Amberkay7895@aol.com or by 630 518 2542 if this dog has been found. She is NOT wearing a collar when she bolted.

Her pictures are in "missing dog" photo album on Fur Angels myspace pictures.

Toby knew what he wanted for Christmas.
The same thing everyone here wanted.
A ring.

Christmas was close, he could feel it.
Ribbons were hung on the walls, and there were special treats with dinner.
More people came by to visit, and everybody was in a good mood.
Except Emmett.

When Toby shared with Emmett his Christmas wish,
Emmett just shook his head.
"Toby, you and I don't get rings," he said. "Look at us, a couple of losers
who were given up on. It's the youngsters that get rings."

Toby looked at his reflection in his water dish.
There was gray on his muzzle and along the tips of his ears.
It was true he couldn't play fetch like he used to.
And his legs hurt when he walked too much.

But he could still race to the front door when he heard it swing open,
wagging his tail like a pup, and go on a slow walk around the block,
sniffing here and there.
And how he loved to curl up at the foot of the bed,
keeping watch during the night.

But those were the old days.
Now he was here, with Emmett instead of with -

"See, here we go again," Emmett said
as puppies up and down the long hallway yapped and barked,
a sign that people had just arrived.
Emmett stretched out on the concrete next to his water dish.
"Wake me when it's over."

Toby peeked through the gate and saw a little boy and girl walking slowly his way.
They stopped in front of almost every kennel,
and sometimes they would kneel in front of one and laugh.

Toby wished them closer, his tail wagging.
He knew if they saw him, then maybe . . . just maybe . . .
"Don't get your hopes up," said Emmett, his eyes still closed.
"You'll only be disappointed. "

Toby looked down the hall.
The woman in the blue shirt who brought food every day
was opening one of the gates.
A brown puppy bounded out and into the arms of the girl,
who squealed with delight.
From her back pocket, the woman in the blue shirt brought out a ring,
pale gray, just like all the rings. She slipped it over the puppy's head.

"Everyone wants cute and adorable," Emmett said
as he heard the door close, knowing what surely had happened.
"Years ago we were cute and adorable. No more."

But it was Christmastime, Toby thought.
Things are different at Christmastime.
There is happiness.
There is cheer. There is hope.

Toby remembered when he had a home and a bed and a yard
and a person who loved him.
But one day people came and they were crying,
and the next day he was here.
Now all he wanted was a ring, again.

Emmett opened an eye when the barking started again
but closed it as he stretched out.
Toby pressed his muzzle to the gate and wished again.
"It's Christmastime, " he said. "A season for miracles."

He saw the woman in the blue shirt,
and she had by the elbow a man walking very slowly down the aisle.
They were talking, but Toby couldn't hear them over the barking.

They came closer. And closer.
Almost, thought Toby. Almost.
Toby squeezed his eyes shut.
He wished harder than he had ever wished before.

"Hey, fella, what's your name?" Toby heard.
He opened his eyes.
Toby noticed the man had gray around his muzzle
and more gray around his ears.
He was bent over slightly,
and Toby noticed a cane holding the man up.

Toby wagged his tail and put his paw on the gate,
and when he did, it opened.
The woman in the blue shirt reached behind her.
There in her hand was a ring. Gray, like all the rest.
But the man shook his head.

Please, Toby wished. Please.

The man reached behind him and pulled out his own ring.
It was red and had green and gold stones that glittered in the light.
He slipped it over Toby's head.

Toby was going home.

"C'mon, boy," the man said. "Cute and adorable, you are.
Lots of life left in you, fella."

As Toby placed one paw outside the kennel, he stopped for just a little.
Lowered his head for just a little.
Glanced behind him for just a little.

The man looked at Emmett, and Emmett looked at the man.
"That one, too, if it's OK," the man said.
"Looks like a set I'd hate to break up.
My home may be a bit small, but my heart is big enough."

The woman in the blue shirt took the ring and slipped it over Emmett's head.
And that's when Toby knew Christmas miracles do happen.

Emmett wagged his tail and spun in a circle and barked.
Just as if he were a puppy.

Dear Ollie -- My name is Gracie and I am a pure bred black Labrador retriever. I am trying to get along since I only have three legs and am known by the humans around me as a special needs dog. If I were perfect and could run like the wind and am confident that I could be adopted into a perfect home. But instead, I was put in a cardboard box that was duct taped shut and abandoned at a local cat shelter. Can you find a home for me? -- Little Gracie

Little Gracie -- Just because you think that you are not a perfect dog doesn't mean that you can never  find love or that love can't find you. When some human falls in love with you, the love will be absolute for you both. Love comes from the heart and knows no boundaries. When someone loves you, their whole world begins to sparkle, Christmas lights twinkle and the snow falling everywhere is uniquely  beautiful.  You will both feel as if life were invented just for the two of you to share.

By the time you read this letter, there will be a home for you. I spoke to South Haven resident Angel Korba, who is one of the founders of Fur Angels, an organization of animal foster homes that specializes in the placement of special needs animals. She told me that you were one of a litter of seven and when you were rescued from that cardboard box, your front paw was missing and your leg was infected. Her organization paid to have your leg amputated so that you could have a new start in life. Fur Angels has found the family for you. You were not a Christmas present for this family but are, instead, an inspiring Christmas story. Your new family had been looking for a dog for a long time. They read your story and saw your picture on the web site and just fell in love with you right then. They may have a special needs child, but I am not sure. Korba said, "People with special needs kids have more patience with special needs animals. It is a misconception that a special needs dog is not adoptable because they are."

Korba said that Fur Angels was founded as a refuge for special needs dogs. Currently she has a one year old Australian shepherd named Marley who is deaf, partially blind and has a seizure disorder. He has lived in a Valparaiso foster home for four months. "We seem to have found the correct medication and have reduced his seizures from two per week to once a month," she said. Marley was found walking down a highway in New Jersey but now is enjoying a nice, warm foster home and could be adopted by the right family. "We work to place animals that may not have a chance anywhere else," Korba said.  So, little Gracie, you have a new life in a forever home. It will not be perfect, because nothing ever is, but the hearts of the humans who adopted you are filled with love.
