Projekt A-Ko - Yoyodyne (Milk Pie Records / Filthy Little Angels)

March 15, 2009 – 10:13 pm
..

Projekt A-Ko are a three piece band from Scotland.   They are also three former members of Ururei Yatsura who released some cracking records in the mid to late 1990s.  Projekt A-Ko released a spilt single last year with indiepop fuzzy favourites Horowitz (both songs are included here, possibly re-recorded).  It was a nice taster of what was to come.  And this is that.  The LP is called  ‘Yoyodyne’ and it  is everything a noisy pop record should be.   With nods to their former band along with Dinosaur Jr and the poppy end of Sonic Youth’s spectrum - this is a record that fizzes with punk attitude, that kicks you forcefully in the teeth with top notch pop tunes.   And it’s suitably discordant.

The thirteen songs that make up this record are enough to lift even the gloomiest spirits.  This record found me in one of those gloomy moods and with each play - I’ve felt my faith in pop music returning. One of the best releases I have heard in sometime.

This record is due to be released on 20th April.   It is available for pre-order now.

We've changed the tracks on our myspace player, bringing in 'Molten Hearts', 'Here Comes New Challenger!' and the new mix of 'Supertriste Duxelle' from the album, Yoyodyne.  We've also brought back 'New Confusion'.  Feel free to visit and click the play button to boost our play counts from... well... 0.  Thanks.

We've also been working on website improvements and you can now pop over and visit:
www.projektako.co.uk/yoyodyne
Thanks to Captain Polaroid for his work on that.

It's good to see that the album has started to arrive on doormats across the globe and we're grateful for your feedback.  For those of you out there that run or have links with review sites or radio stations, let us know if you want us to send our press pack download link (three track sampler, images and press release) anywhere and we'll happily do so.

We've also updated the Projekt A-ko information page and album page on last.fm for those of you that use it.  (I also noticed that Supertriste Duxelle is tagged as Supertriste Duxele' on the album so I've re-tagged my copy, the tag-aware of you out there may want to do the same... not that it's too important.  Edit: just noticed that 'Here Comes New Challenger!' is tagged as 'Here Come New Challenger', so you might want to lob an 's' in there too).

And don't forget the old forum is still up and running if you want to chat to others, including Fergus.

I think the new Glasgow PodcART team are planning to play a track or do a feature or news update on Projekt A-ko in the next couple of weeks.  It's a great new venture, promoting Scottish music and artists with weekly podcasts of new music and music/art news.  Stef Thomas who did the artwork for Yoyodyne is one of the featured artists on their site.  It's worth a look/listen anyway, if you have time.

OK, that's it for now.  Thanks.

Finally! Yeah! :-)

Please head on over to our page and track down the little preorder button for the new album - Yoyodyne - which can be pre-ordered for the easy sum of £10 to include p&p wherever you are in the world.

The pre-order is set up with a Paypal button but I believe this will allow other card options for those that haven't set up a paypal account - or guide you through the simple process of setting one up.

We've had a lot of interest from people asking when the album will be ready so hopefully you're all champing at the bit to place your orders. I'll keep the bulletins coming in future weeks with the tracklisting and artwork preview. It would be great if you could spread the word to any of your friends who might be interested... or just buy them one for Christmas and get them interested.
:-)

As ever, your support is valued. You also have the pleasure of knowing that Fergus is processing every order, so if you want to leave him a personal message in the 'add special instructions to the seller' box on paypal I'm sure it'll make him smile.
It's got to be worth £10 just to do that, surely?

I'm off to place my order and think of a special instruction.

Thank you.

ENTREVISTA A PROJEKT A-KO

Marzo 20, 2008 by ABSURDISTA

It's already more than six years that the mythical group Urusei Yatsura separated after publishing three discs and making unforgettable concerts in Spain, like the one of the festival of Benicassim in which a frenetic action under a storm ended with part of the stage falling on the group. Its dissolution left us desolate, because they were the perfect group, had incredible songs, attitude, much noise, were fans of his fans, they were gamberros and they always maintained a rage and amateur adolescent who always made sound them fresh and funny. Graham disappeared but the rest of the group ahead follows with the name of Projekt A-Ko and a hopeful return after to have heard some of its new songs.

Aplasta tus gafas de pasta: -What have you been up to these years, since the dissolution of Yatsura?

Projekt A-ko:-Trying to adapt to normal life and earning a living!

APL: -Why did Yatsura have to end? -¿Por qué tuvo que acabarse Yatsura?

P.Ako: -We were exhausted, broke and creatively blocked. It was a relief for all of us.

APL: -Could you tell us where the name Projekt A-ko comes from? -¿De donde procede el nombre Projekt A-ko?

P.Ako: -At first it was just a side band with Ian from Yatsura and Kenny Mcloud from a great and underappreciated Glasgow band called Eska (http://www.myspace.com/eskarock) I thought the name was appropriate because the Projekt A-ko anime is similar but maybe not quite as good as the Urusei Yatsura one, just like I thought our side band would be the same but not quite as good as the main band.
In the end Kenny had to quit and after Urusei split the name just hung around Elaine and Ian and myself. Then I found out that Projekt A-ko was animated by a lot of the same people who worked on UY and there are some UY in-jokes in the films, so it seemed even more right, especially since the series is about three girls who squabble a lot, which pretty much describes the band now!

APL: -What is happening with rock and pop these days?

P.Ako: -I don't know. All my spare time goes into making our music, someone else can worry about what everyone else is doing.

APL: -What do you think of the studied attitude of groups like Franz Ferdinand?

P.Ako: --All bands have to make a decision about how to present themselves. At least Franz had the guts and intelligence to take control of their own image and not let their record label or the media decide for them. Not sure if that's true of the bands that came after them though! Regardless, its not really an attitude since Alex has always dressed impeccably.

APL: -Could you tell us which bands you like best, and which you dislike completely? Does Glasgow still have so many good groups as it used to some years ago?

P.Ako: -I like bands that make music because they can't stop themselves. I dislike bands who make music for any other reason.
There are loads of groups in Glasgow– Some Young Pedro, Twilight Sad, Remember Remember, Errors, Dananananakroyd, Galchen, Q Without U, Bricolage, Make Model, Copy Haho to name a few (though they're not all strictly from Glasgow), plus a lot of the older bands are still making music so if anything there's more great bands than ever.
Glasgow is fucking brilliant.
"Some Young Pedro" (http://www.myspace.com/someyoungpedro)
"Twilight Sad" (http://www.myspace.com/thetwilightsad)
"Remember Remember" (http://www.myspace.com/rememberremember)
"Errors"(http://www.myspace.com/weareerrors)
"Dananananakroyd"(http://www.myspace.com/dananananaykroyd)
"Galchen"(http://www.myspace.com/galchen)
, "Q Without U"(http://www.myspace.com/qwithoutu1)
"Bricolage", (http://www.myspace.com/bricolagetheband)
"Make Model", (http://www.myspace.com/makemodel)
"Copy Haho", (http://www.myspace.com/copyhaho)

APL: -Ever thought of trying again to set up your own independent
record label?
-¿Habéis pensado alguna vez en volver a montar vuestro propio sello discográfico?

P.Ako: -I've got total respect for anyone who can run a good indie label, it takes incredible commitment. I don't really love records enough, to me they're tools for making more music, not objects of desire, although I appreciate what people see in them. Everyone I've met who runs a good label has the most amazing record/CD collection kept in controlled atmosphere vaults. My collection is scratched on the floor with no covers, sorry…-Tengo un enorme respeto por alguien que pueda llevar un buen sello de música independiente.

APL: -Why are you still faithfull to the noise sound?

P.Ako: -We love noise and we love melody, we're just trying to combine them in the (im)perfect ratio.

APL: -Have you a new way of approaching your song writing, in the music or your lyrics with project A-ko that you did not have with Yatsura?

P.Ako: -Its still like pulling teeth but at least we are no longer banging our heads against a brick wall at the same time.

APL:-What do the terms lo fi, punk and indie mean in the year 2007? Do we need a teenage riot?-¿Qué es lo-fi, punk, indie, en el año 2007? ¿Hace falta una revuelta adolescente?

-I don't know, I'm just trying my hardest to make something good. Labels like these can be a rallying point for like minded bands, if a new word is required for a sound it proves that something original is happening but at the same time the new sound is recognized, the word defines and restricts what it can become. Perhaps to be really creative you have to run ahead of language. So far I've failed, but I think the band is coming close to something a little bit new.
Riots are good, perfect things only become interesting if they are broken.

APL: -Our teenagers need a healthy touch. What can you offer them?

P.Ako:-This song is a plea for compassion for people who feel overwhelmed. It was inspired by a picture in a Christian magazine that seemed to be encouraging parents to hug their confused teenage children for long periods, which would probably lead to even worse confusion!

APL: -Do you have any political interests in this moment or any sort of indie ethic when you do your music?

P.Ako: -We have a new baby and are moving house. I have very little spare time and it is all focused on making music. I still can't decide if making music is a political act or just selfish. The music is independent in that it is made by myself with just a few friends with no regard to anything else…-Tenemos otro bebe y estamos mudándonos a una casa nueva.

APL: -How will the first record of Project A-ko be? When will it be released? Will it have any singles?

P.Ako: -The first single is a 4 Track 7" shared with Horowitz on Filthy Little Angels. Our two tracks are called 'Nothing Works Twice' and 'Goodbye Sunlight'
The next release is a track on a Broken Tail Records 4 Track CD called 'Here Comes New Challenger'
After that we will release a single ourselves called 'Molten Hearts' followed by the album.
The album has taken too long to write and record. It is more of a consolidation of things we learned in the past than a forward advance, but it has some good songs!
We have already written several tracks for the next album. It will be much more MBV/Sonic Youth/Merzbow influenced.

APL: -What else are you into apart from music? -¿Cúales son vuestras aficiones extramusicales

-Making baby food, changing nappies, moving house, Miike Takeshi, Noise, Xinli Supreme. -Hacer comida de bebes, cambiar pañales, mudarse de casa, Mike Takeshi, Ruido, Xinli Supreme.

APL: -Which is your favourite meal?-¿Cual es vuestra comida preferida?

P.Ako: -At the moment, Chicken Caesar Salad.-En este momento. Ensalada César con pollo.

APL: -Why do you think your fans like you so much? -¿Por qué os quieren tanto vuestros fans?

P.Ako: -In Spain a lot of people remember how we played a gig for the end of the world and nearly died for Rock and Roll at Benecassim.
People can tell we are music fans like them who have just got up on stage.
We make music first, anything else (or nothing else!) follows…unlike so many acts.

APL: -Is there anything else you think is important which we
have not asked you yet?

P.Ako: -I wouldn't ask my opinion about anything important…
Have you asked yourselves why you are doing this?

Like waiting for a bus, you wait for ages, and nothing... then two come along at once.  No sooner have you got your hands on the 7" vinyl with ’Nothing Works Twice’ and ’Goodbye Sunlight’ on it, and we’re about to hit you with another track for purchase.  This time it’s on CD, so no excuses from those of you without a turntable.  It’s a mere £2.99 (with free delivery from HMV) which is pretty fair just for a new Projekt A-ko track - but you get another three tracks from another three great acts thrown in for free! ;-)  What a deal!

So...  Projekt A-ko - Here Comes New Challenger!

It looks like this:

Surely that artwork alone is worth £2.99!  It barely covers the cost of the felt tip pens.

Reviews so far...

"Projeckt A-Ko who sound rather like the band from which it formed, Uresei Yatsura. It’s a poppy Pavement, all slanted and dislocated."
http://www.russellsreviews.co.uk/cdreviews/singles170208.htm

"Project A-KO bring to the EP ’Here Comes New Challenger’ an addictive number that brings back memories of Sonic Youth, some excellent rocky guitar riffs and drum beats. They are due to release an album later on this year and from the strength of this track it should be well worth waiting for!"
http://www.noizemakesenemies.co.uk/2008/03/broken-tail-records-four-by-four-more.html

"Projekt A-KO: somewhere between Pavement & the band they were formed from the ashes of; Urusei Yatsura, impressive!"
http://www.subba-cultcha.com/singles.php?id=17 (bottom of page)

"Projekt A-ko also starts a bit quietly but soon they kick into the distorto-sound that we know and expect from any former Urusei Yatsura comprised band."
http://www.isthismusic.com/tripwires-projekt-a-ko-to-the-barricades-ben-marwood

"next up is the rather more interesting projeckt a-ko, formed by 3 former members of urusei yatsura (creators of one of my favourite albums ever - slain by),with ’here comes new challenger!’ this time around they sound more like pavement, with a hint of sonic youth feedback near the end."

Official release date is Monday 24th March 2008 so there shouldn’t be too long a delay between pre-order and delivery.

Your support is much appreciated.

Thank you!

PS - If you haven’t bought the 7" vinyl yet... why not?  It’s lovely - purchase link on our page. USB turntables only cost about £100 these days and you can convince your parents/grandparents to fork out for one so that they can rip all their Kajagoogoo tracks to MP3.  ;-)
