Current mood: thankful
This is my last year with Zombie Kickball - and I can't thank all you ghouls enough!
Thank you for showing up in this miserable weather! Thank you for playing your hearts out - despite the cold rain!!! You're wildly creative. You're insanely funny. You are awesome! I salute you!!!
I appreciate and adore each and every one of you - as does the Good Shepherd Food Bank! Give yourselves a pat on the back and a round of applause! ~ Catherine

Ray Routhier at the Portland Press Herald wrote an impressive piece about zombies, and quite a bit about Portland Zombie Kickball – his article appeared in today's paper. Check it out! And keep in mind - I have a knack for sounding remarkably stupid when interviewed. Please - cut me some slack. ~ Catherine

Current mood: catalyzed
We were both complimented and criticized for the lack of organization in our game last year. Zombie Kickball is a somewhat spontaneous event. It's pretty much improvisational theater. It's not practiced sport at all.
However, some of our players would like to organize our cast of characters so that we can all enjoy ourselves a little more. If you're inclined to add structure to our game, we encourage you to do so! If you're inspired to direct undead players, give it a shot! If you're in character when you corral the zombies and herd them, go for it!
Maybe you want to keep score, so we know when to switch the kickers and fielders (we would certainly have a better chance of all getting a turn at the plate). Maybe you want to coach or referree (again, so we all have a better chance of getting a couple of turns at the plate). Knock yourself out! Maybe the individual players and teams will follow your lead. They are zombies after all! If you're costumed and in character when you lead your team mates, there's no telling how far we can stretch our fun.

Current mood: determined
We posted this same unfortunate note last year. We hoped for better luck this year, but it's looking like we'll have another unpleasant forecast this weekend.
We've been asked several times if there is a scheduled rain date for our event.
There is no alternate day for our game. But there is rain predicted for this weekend - with scattered thunderstorms likely on Sunday.
Please plan ahead and dress accordingly on game day. Clearly, we will all have to modify our costumes a little bit. And we may even have to modify our game. So let's keep our fingers crossed for a break in the weather!
The Good Shepherd Food Bank will be collecting cash and non-perisables, regardless of the weather, at both the game on the Eastern Prom and the show at Space.

We posted these two simples rules of conduct last year, but it might be worth mentioning them again before this year's event.
We want to see everyone have fun at the game on Sunday, but we certainly don't want anyone to have fun at somebody else's expense. We ask that you all play by two rules on game day… Be civil… And be courteous. Be respectful of Portland Police Officers and Park Rangers. Be respectful of the Eastern Promenade and the East End Beach. Stay out of the street – do not disrupt the flow of traffic along the Prom, don't put yourself in harm's way. Clean up after yourself – do not litter in the park, don't be destructive on the bleachers or playground. Fake blood will stain most materials and facades. Makeup can also mark some surfaces. Also, many people are allergic to makeup and latex. If you spill or smear blood (or any other makeup), clean it up immediately. Paper towels and moist towelettes will be available. Be respectful of the Bayside Little League players and their field. Be respectful of Munjoy Hill residents and their property. Stay with the group – do not impose upon other sports teams, do not intimidate the general public, don't injure the field, don't hurt the lawn. Stay out of people's gardens and away from their vehicles – do not stagger through flower beds, don't stumble against cars. Keep your moans to a dull roar. Under no circumstances should you attempt to scare anyone who isn't part of the group. Under no circumstances should you touch anyone who is not part of the group. And you shouldn't touch anyone who is part of the group unless they have indicated consent. Don't dig at the dirt. Don't pull up the grass. Remember, fake blood will stain. If you brush against anything and transfer makeup, clean it up right away. If you notice somebody over-acting on Sunday, we ask that you quietly remind them to get a hold of their character and tone-down their performance. It wouldn't be any fun if some of us received citations for disorderly conduct on game day. Or if all of us were considered a public nuisance and our game was shut down.

Current mood: curious
Please contact Julie before the end of the week if you're interested - she needs to get a head count if they're going to make this happen!
Our friends with Zomboree have invited us to attend their mid-season spectacular to play an exhibition game with them! Their gory game is scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 18 in Providence, Rhode Island. Zomboree is a kickball team in the Providence Kickball League. Members of their team have some sick and silly ideas for members of our group – they’ve suggested we play a gruesome game with them during the day, and they’ve also hinted at a ghoulish party at night! This sounds like a bloody fantastic undead opportunity for Portland Zombie Kickball players. Show your ghastly and grisly support and appreciation for Zomboree! Contact team-member Julie if you're interested in road tripping to Providence to play a game, eat some brains, drink some beer and make some new friends - and do it quick because she needs to know before the end of the week if they're going to make this happen!

You may have joined the growing ranks of the undead long ago, but there are still sizable bands of survivors out there. We no longer have the needs we once did - we don't hunger for appetizing, nutritional, complex meals anymore, we simply crave brains. But many of our families and friends are still struggling to satisfy their most basic needs, especially during these trying economic times. Fellow zombies, it's time we did something for our community. Portland Zombie Kickball will be collecting donations for the Good Shepherd Food Bank on game day. Although not required, zombie participants and spectators are encouraged to bring non-perishable canned and dried foods with them to the event. A representative from Good Shepherd Food Bank will be on hand to collect our donations. In addition to food, Good Shepherd will gladly accept cash donations.
