Hi there,

Just some quick news!

Public Holiday:

The shop will be closed for the Melbourne Cup Public Holiday.  The Tuesday night skate will not be running that night either.  Neil and I will be committed to the final day of the Southern Cross Speed skating carnival held at Dandenong netball courts for all of Tuesday.  Please pop to see some fast skating action! (Not by us!)

Tuesday night skate and 5 week learn to skate program:

Having the small break over winter saw a few new faces pop along for the Tuesday night skate which is awesome…and also some ladies too! A few new skaters were graduates of my five week learn to skate program.  A new course is due to start on the 7th of November at 3pm.  This is conducted over 5 Saturdays with 3 sessions being held at Thomas St reserve and the last 2 leaving from Hampton where you get to skate the more real stuff that you encounter on recreational skates.  I really enjoy teaching this course but to run it successfully, I need 8 fully paid participants to be registered by the 4th of November.  It is only $100 for the course.  Please reply back for more info.  Sadly, if the class is not up to the quota, and due to the Christmas/post Christmas craziness I will have to wait until late February before starting another course.

Slalom skating workshop and State Inline Speed Skating Titles:

We have the slalom skating goddess Naomi Grigg back here in Melbourne for workshops on the 28th and 29th of November.  This year, for those who want to test their abilities even further, we will be also running a comp which will be classified as a State Title event! Much like an aggressive skate comp, the other skaters cheer you on as everyone wants to see you do your best. For footage of one her (very wet!) workshops that she conducted last year in June, go to June 2008 workshop featured on YouTube.  It is raw footage to make a movie, so no over inflated, inspirational skating..just good footage of how the workshops are conducted.  Because this event will tie in with the Inline Speed Skating Titles at Dandenong netball courts, the workshops and comp will be conducted there too.

State Titles for Skate park:

The guys and girls who prefer to skate in skate parks, their State Titles are also in November too!  The Under 18’s have their own event close to home at Sir William Fry reserve in Cheltenham (next to Southland shopping centre) on the 7th of November starting at 10am.  The last of the free coaching sessions will be conducted this Saturday from 9 to 10.30 am. The older skaters have their State Titles at Ballarat Skate Park on the 28th of November from 11am onwards.

Employment opportunities at the shop!:

(1): Full time staff. Bayside Blades will be expanding its product range into ice hockey and ice figure skates!  This means that we need another fulltime person in the shop to balance the efforts of Jenny and Cuong who are doing the most fabulous work at the moment, but are a bit stretched!  Ideally, the person will be adult aged and have an interest/involvement in ice skating sports.  This coincides with the opening of the 2 new Olympic sized ice rinks at Docklands later this year/early next year.

(2). Junior casual: We also need a junior staff person for casual work.  Ideally aged between 15 and 18 to work some shifts after school, Saturdays or Sundays.

(3). Data entry: Our data entry position that was advertised in the last news snippets has been filled but it has been identified that this position can now be extended to 5 days a week.  The current person is going great guns but has other commitments.  This role can be job shared quite easily, so there is an opportunity for someone to fill the gap, and would suit someone with data entry experience looking for part time work  for 2 to 3 days a week.

For more info on any of these positions, please email job@baysideblades.com.au with the job position in the subject line.  I will then forward you a more detailed description.

Regards

Andrea Winzor

Oh, shoot, I was meant to update MySpace too but missed doing it on the day promised.  I did update Facebook on the 22nd but must have got sidetracked before getting to MySpace.  OK, here is my message....

Here in the shop, we always have a specials box of clothing and beanies. After a while, it gets a bit overloaded whcih we then donate to Red Cross. Just as we were about to donate the items, Red Cross said they preferred monetry donations rather than clothing.

We then came up with the idea that anyone who purchases an item from that box, the price paid is to be donated to Red Cross. The grand total came to $480 which was paid today. The balance of the clothing has now been packed up ready to be collected by Red Cross.

Some of our customers live in the areas affected by the fires. One of the guys was in the shop and was spared the home he lives in but made some good purchases from the shop once he knew it would benefit his own local community.

Thankyou to all who purchased from the 'bushfire box'.

FINALLY, we have organised a donation to Red Cross.  I put aside some suitable stock for a donation a while back just after the bushfires, but then Red Cross asked for cash donations rather than goods.

SO, what we are doing here at the shop is asking people to purchase an item from the donation box and we will donate the price paid!
The balance of the items will then be donated to Red Cross on the 20th of April.( Im sure that new items will be easier for them to manage rather than someones manky old blankets, etc. )

The amount raised will be announced on Bayside Blades MySpace and Facebook on the 21st of April.
