Future Ape TapesThursday, Aug. 20 @ Caledonia Lounge
I'd been looking forward to last night's Future Ape Tapes show at Caledonia for a while. Their newest album, RNA Replicatiors: The Super Sessions had been in my ears ever since my roommate handed me the disc. I was excited to see the live version of their innovative mix of hip-hop and psychedelic beats. And on a muggy and rainy Thursday night, they did not disappoint.
At first glance, it seemed an unlikely collaboration. Six guys on stage: one spinning beats; one playing the guitar; and all members but one rapping. It's an eclectic band. Before the show, I hadn’t realized there were five different guys on the mic. Some were more talented than others, but all definitely had skills. At last night’s show the female member of the group was missing, but the show must go on. At first, I was somewhat overwhelmed by how loud the music was– I didn't realize that was the norm for Caledonia as it was my first time there. But when my ears eventually adjusted and I had a cold beer in my hand, I was ready to dance to whatever beats they were mixing.
The guys' set was haphazardly put together to be sure, but that failed to detract from the bumpin' beats. Much of the night was freestyle rap, with the boys stopping themselves when it got to be a little too much. When they played songs off their new album, the performance was solid. More often than not, the start of a new song was a little shaky, but as the guys found their rhythm and flow with one another it was quality hip-hop. Each of the band members brought his unique sound to the table. Some of the best beats reminded me of André from Outkast.  My personal favorite was a little rap about the unnecessary (read: insane) amount of money that went into the newly built Tate II.
On their MySpace page, under "record label" Future Ape Tapes declare themselves to be Pro Bono Publico. They're doing it for the people.  And last night it was clear this band is doing what they love and having a great time at it.  Their energy was boundless, electrifying and contagious. It was the perfect cure for my post–summertime depression.

Yo yo,

WE'RE ON TWITTER BAAAAYBEEE!!! I'm not quite certain of the ramifications that come with such an endeavor, but...we're on it mayne so follow that trayne. It's like 3 'o clock in the morning and i'm tired as HELL yet I refuse to sleep so I'm watching videos on 2012 and listening to Sirah and Fefe Dobson...I am consumed by the idea of collaboration. I always wanna work with new artists because I am fascinated by how they adapt to a rhythm in order to express a certain sentiment. I learn from it...

...F.A.T loves to collab. When we do, those collaborators are essentially brethren (not to exclude sisters) in creation. Hypothetically speaking, what if we collaborate with every creative outlet on the planet? How would the finished product represent such widespread cooperation? It seems the products would progress towards being characteristic of all individuals involved and become somewhat of a living record for all we experience...

...Twitter is something like that, I guess. SOOOOOOOO FOLLLLLLLOOWWWW USSSS!!!
