Work should be completed by the end of the next week on the 3rd CD. After working on this one off and on for almost a year, it will be one worth waiting for. Jennie DeVoe has added some incredible vocals on a couple of tracks which really is something to hear! I am posting an article which will give you another insight as to the incredible talent being added to this effort. Thanks to Lisa VanHorn for making us aware of this article. ..tr valign="top">| 3/19/2008 12:13:00 PM | Email this article • Print this article | ..tr valign="top"> ..tr valign="top"> | | Dan Powell of Marrowstone Records recently recorded tracks for John Mellencamp’s drummer, Dane Clark, and the legendary guitarist for Moby Grape, Jerry Miller. It was quick. Maybe even a little dirty too, since the setting was a cabin on the Olympic Peninsula near Port Angeles instead of a slick Seattle studio. But, more than that, it was one of those rejuvenating experiences that affect a person for days afterward.
Almost a month ago, Dan Powell, 37, of Marrowstone Records emerged from that cabin-cum-studio with intensified vigor after a two-day recording session with Dane Clark, John Mellencamp’s drummer. The session also included guitarist Jerry Miller of Moby Grape fame, number 68 on the Rolling Stone list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time.
The session sprang from a network that stretches like string art displayed on tiny nails - from Sequim to Southern California, northward to Tacoma, over to Port Angeles and back again to the east on Marrowstone Island. It began when Clark decided to do a solo album. His representative, Charlie "Chuck" Lewis, a Sequim native now living in Newport Beach, Calif., as president of High End Celebrity Entertainment, helped him fulfill a lifelong dream of working with Miller, who now lives in Tacoma. Lewis also contacted Jeff Kuss of Port Angeles for audio-engineer recommendations. Kuss then called Powell, a friend with whom he’d play in a band almost 20 years ago, to see if he was up for a recording date with this unique duo. Powell readily accepted, packed his equipment and headed up to Clallam County.
Originally, a Seattle recording studio seemed to make the most sense, but "this environment seemed much more inviting to them," says Powell.
Powell, a Renton firefighter who also teaches an audio-engineering course at Olympic College in Bremerton, feels the most important thing for musicians is that they have a safe environment without pressure while recording. That’s why the cabin atmosphere worked so well. His is no treadmill studio, he says. "It’s more of an organic process."
Part of his expertise, says Powell, is his teaching background, which he believes is helpful in getting bands organized. Plus, recording music with Powell can be done at a fraction of the price charged by big-city studios.
Music has been a part of his life for decades. When he was younger he played in a band called Buzz the Tower that played at the Back Alley Tavern (now The Upstage) in Port Townsend. As a teacher in Saudi Arabia, he taught a class called "Rock Band." Since he’s come back home, he’s dabbled in recording here and there, but three years ago, when his father passed away, it was "a wakeup call" to take the venture more seriously.
What he’s doing now was not possible 10 years ago, says Powell. With digital electronics readily available to anyone who’s interested these days, the recording business has gone back to the musicians on the local level. "That’s my model for the business."
Technically, "the most important thing is a collection of microphones and your ears," he says. For software, Powell uses Pro Tools by Digidesign, the same program used to produce Amy Winehouse’s Grammy-Award-winning album Back to Black.
Party like a rock star
Powell’s business partner is his wife, Carla. It was she who ended up with backstage passes to the John Mellencamp concert Feb. 19 in Victoria, B.C. Since Dan had to teach that evening, Carla took her sister, and the two of them "partied like rock stars," she says.
After the concert, the two of them accompanied Clark along with members of the Mellencamp band and Jerry Miller to the post-concert bar-hopping party.
"What was most interesting was seeing the younger musicians’ reactions to the legendary Jerry Miller. I can see why he is referred to as a ’musicians’ musician.’ It was fascinating to see the players who had just finished being screamed at by thousands of fans humbled by an old guy in a beard and bandana. Though soft spoken and unassuming, Jerry made friends everywhere he went." recalls Carla.
With a Moby Grape reunion album being considered, Powell hopes to remain in contact with Miller and, of course, would like more sessions with the famed guitarist who had a hand in pioneering the San Francisco sound of the ’60s. But he’s interested in helping out local musicians too.
Currently, Powell is working with local jazz vocalist Jenny Davis on her next solo album that includes all-around musician Chuck Easton. I see bands at The Boiler Room and would like to help them too, he says. "It’s important to have their music recorded and set it free."

I am currently in the studio with Mellencamp and working on a new record. We are fortunate to have a wonderful producer, T-Bone Burnett working with us. For more information on his work, check out his website. www.tboneburnett.com
Be sure to watch the NFL season opener on 9/6/07. The game is between the Colts and the Saints. Mellencamp and band will be doing a pre-game performance on the field. The Super Bowl Banner will be revealed as well. Should be a pretty cool night.
Then, on 9/9 we are off to Randall's Island, New York City, NY for this year's Farm Aid. If it is the same as last year, you should be able to catch it live on the web. www.farmaid.org
Of course before or after these shows, you can come out and catch The Dane Clark Band at a venue near you! Watch my page for show dates!

Thanks to Jane for the following Blog about us! Life Goes On….. August 12th, 2007 Jane Shawver Ok, so here we are sitting around waiting for the Farm Aid "Festival" to happen. And we are sitting around waiting for the fall tour to officially be announced. Also sitting here waiting for the release of the new JM Biography, Born In A Small Town. And let's not forget about the Ghost Brother's of Darkland County, John's Broadway musical with Stephen King. Even though they just successfully workshopped the play in NYC a few weeks back to rave reviews, we are still waiting on a release date for that too! So what do Mellenheads do with all this "sitting around and waiting" time? They go see the next best thing….The Dane Clark Band!
The Dane Clark Band is fronted by the highly-expressive and multi-talented Dane Clark, drummer for the John Mellencamp band. In his own band, Dane is electric on guitar while providing lead vocals to his own incredible catalogue of songs from his two highly acclaimed CDs, the self-titled debut CD and his newest release, Sad Goodbye to Mr. Sunshine. Dane's amazing vocals on songs like "Random Act of Love" and "Suburbia" when mixed with many rock classics from the 60s and 70s makes for an awesome evening of great all-out Rock-n-Roll. Dane is joined on stage by fellow Mellencamp band member, and in my opinion, the World's best bass player, Jon E. Gee. Nothing excites me more during a Mellencamp show than to watch Jon explode on bass during a rockin' version of Crumblin' Down. That was until I witnessed this master bassist perform his solo of the Bill Wither's classic "Ain't No Sunshine" during a Dane Clark Band show. As my fellow blogger and mellenfriend Christine put it "It's the hottest thing I've ever seen!" And you will get no arguments from me! Guitar playing doesn't get any better than the highly talented Erik Scull who also provides keyboards and backing vocals. When Dane steps aside and Erik takes over on lead vocals for several Stevie Ray Vaughn songs, everyone is filled with "Pride and Joy". Steve Prince, while always wearing a big smile, provides the rhythm to the Dane Clark Band with his stellar performance on drums. And what a difficult job he must have playing drums for a world class drummer like Dane Clark. But Steve never misses a beat. He is as fun to watch on stage as Dane is when performing with Mellencamp. If this amazing foursome isn't incredible enough, occassionally they will be joined on stage by Mark Carnes playing harmonica. Mark brings a level of playing to this band that puts everyone on the dance floor and leaves with everyone wanting more. I highly recommend that everyone jump at the chance to see this amazing Rock-n-Roll band. Believe me you will instantly become a DCB fan the first time you see them perform live. Check out Dane's myspace page for a current list of upcoming shows. I know I am already planning my next trip to Indiana to get my dose of the Dane Clark Band!

What a night it was at Buffalo Wild Wings in Anderson. This was our first time playing there and we can't wait to get back!
John and I were a little tired after our whirlwind trip to DC with Mellencamp. We played for the soldiers at Walter Reed Medical Center. It aired live last Friday night on HDNet. I hope you caught it. And yes, my cymbal did break during the last song! And I also sprained my ankle.
So I hobbled into B-Dubs to a huge crowd of Mellenheads. Everyone came out for Jon E Gee's birthday party...which was a huge success. I believe we were chased out of there past closing time. It sure was great getting to meet new people and talk with those I already knew. I want to see you all back to another one of my shows!
It was nice seeing some of the familiar Anderson faces as well. It is hard to get caught up on those short breaks. We have more shows booked, so come out again!!

I was fortunate enough to be interviewed by two local Crawfordsville newspapers this week. The were promoting my April 14th appearance at Rumors Bar & Grill. This is a really cool bar that has been recently renovated by new owners. Anyway, if you are interested, I am posting the articles. Clark is no 'Rumor'Barry LewisCommunity Editor From Mellencamp to Montgomery County It doesn't matter to Dane Clark if he is playing drums on stage with John Mellencamp or playing the guitar and singing vocals at Rumors Bar and Grill in Crawfordsville. It's all the same. "It's doesn't really matter where I am playing at," Clark said. "If people are there to hear what you are doing then that is all that really matters. It doesn't matter if there is a crowd of 150 or 15,000. If they are there, they want to hear you do your thing." Clark, an Anderson native, has toured with Mellencamp since 1996 and he will bring his own band to Rumors Bar and Grill Saturday night. And he promises a great show. "People can expect a high-energy, meat-and-potato style of rock-n-roll," Clark said Thursday before heading into the studio to work on a new Mellencamp album. This will not be the first time Clark has played in Crawfordsville. "It's been a little while since we were there and it was fun," he said. In fact, Clark has also been tabbed as the entertainment for the July 14 Doc's Run event at Rumors as well. That concert will be outside as the bar will be having a block party on Green Street that night. This will be the biggest name who has visited Rumors since it opened last Oct. 21 and is just the beginning of things to come. "We just want to bring in some top-quality entertainment to the Crawfordsville area," Rumor's co-owner Scott Ferretti said. "Why should you have to go Indy or Chicago or someplace like that to see good quality entertainment? We are committed to helping revitalize downtown Crawfordsville and bringing someone like this should show that commitment." "We are trying to bring the crowd back downtown," Co-owner Jason Roche said. "We want to bring the energy downtown." Joining Clark in the Dane Clark Band are Jon E. Gee (bass, vocals), Erik Scull (guitar, keyboards, vocals) and Steve Prince (drums). The foursome have been together for a little more than two years now and tour throughout Indiana. Gee, like Clark, has been a mainstay on several Mellencamp albums. Clark enjoys playing around sites in Indiana with his band. "When I tour with Mellencamp we go everywhere, so I try to stay close to home with my band since I have a family," Clark said. Clark and his wife Teena, have three daughters - Emily, Taylor, and Abigail. That's another reason he enjoys playing with Mellencamp. "When he makes an album it's an hour-and-half from my home," he said. "If it was someone else it could be anywhere in the United States or even in London." Clark has branched out throughout his career. He is not just a performer, but is now a songwriter, musician and producer. "I enjoy doing it all," he said. "I really enjoy the song writing and producing. I can't really see myself pounding the drum on tour in 15 years so the producing and writing is nice." The Dane Clark band has two CDs out - Dane Clark and Sad Goodbye to Mr. Sunshine. In addition, they have a third CD "about 75 percent complete." The best piece of advice he was given about music? "I was told 'What the hell are you thinking?'," Clark said. "My parents were both teachers and told me I could get my degree in whatever I wanted and I got it in music performance. They really wanted me to have something else to fall back on and now I see that, but at the time I didn't take their advice - but it was good advice." So what is Clark's best advice to young aspiring artists? "Don't put all your eggs in one basket, have something to fall back on," he said. "Other than that, follow your dreams." And Clark's appearance is helping Rumors' owners Ferretti, Roche and Brian Pedro follow their dreams. "This is a big night for us," Pedro said. "It's Yager Night and the Yager Girls will be here and we have great entertainment. There is no need to go anyplace else."
