spent the last few days recording tracks for the next record with my friend curt wells.  jonathon griffin plays violin, melissa kennedy sings backup.
curt is the sound guy for the earl in east atlanta and has toured with mooney suzuki, man or astroman, and vampire weekend.
the sessions went great and the new record is well on its way.  we have 15 songs recorded.  going to cut some of those and properly tighten up the rest.

there's a new website i'm working on to coincide with the record.  should be up soon at bentrickey.com

the last show at the highland inn ballroom with rick dang went excellent. thanks to everyone that came out. check out his band dang dang dang (on my top friends)

the next show is next month with william elliot whitmore at the drunken unicorn.  come out if you can

in friends news:  mr brandon schmitt is recording a new record with doug milliken (old fat god), eric schwan (the orchards) and dean thornton which i cannot wait to hear.   a_relative_term sent me a cool cd  of new songs a little while ago.  i heard he put together a covers e.p. that is fantastic, but i have yet to get my mitts on it.  j.d. stooks just recorded a couple songs (including a cover of one of my older tunes) that he is going to release in some form or another and his last record is definitely something to pick up.  nich hohman and his family, otherwise known as brewer's row have dropped their first record, "the jaw for the job, the heart for the sin"  and i got it off cdbaby.  it's a fantastic record.  rick dang is selling an e.p. around town of some of his classics.

as a kid growing up in alabama and having tastes in music not widely available at malls or wal-mart, it was good to find Sunburst Records on Jordan Lane in Huntsville, AL. Since I was 16 or so, I would go up there to buy records. The place burned down once when I was in High School. Jay rebuilt it. Jay would always sit, drink beer and always talk to us young'ns. Everytime I came back from wherever I was to Alabama to visit old friends and family, I would stop by Jay's and find something. Whether it was when I was 16 and buying an old Swans live video from '84 to just a couple months ago when I was buying the newest 7" on Arkham records, I always loved going to Sunburst.
I heard it closed down.
Have fun Jay, thanks for the great record store all those years.
