My friend Krynn, in a budget-minded sense I think a lot of people will adopt for 2009, made a New Year’s resolution to buy “new” clothing only from thrift shops, and I applaud her — I don’t know that I could do it. But back in the day, like, six years ago, when I was all twee-kidded out for every show in a 50-mile radius from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus, I probably could have given her a run for her smartly managed money — and I was, much more than now, frankly, a way more creative dresser.

Thrifting brings with it an ultimate exercise in creative dressing. Just exactly how are you going to make a $3 blazer work for you? To what event can you wear an $8 beaded shift? How many of your friends would covet a 50-cent scarf? I know, from experience, the task is daunting and rewarding, and so I look forward to Krynn’s upcoming wardrobe — and I plan to take on a bit of her thriftiness.

Other Omahans in the mood to save can turn to Dundee’s Scout: Dry Goods and Trade, 5019 Underwood Ave., which just turned a shiny year old. For those who can’t make it to the Midtown shop, Scout is offering gently used vintage goods on the queen of handmade and vintage websites, Etsy. Scout’s Etsy page, scoutdrygoods.etsy.com, is hosting particularly awesome vintage finds for men and women at fair prices; each item has a detailed description and full disclosure on its condition. Shipping is $5.20 within the U.S.

If you’re looking for something stylish to do in town Thursday tonight, head to the Holland Performing Arts Center, 1200 Douglas St. downtown, for the third annual Omaha Entertainment and Arts Awards ceremony at 7:30 p.m. The best of Omaha’s creative people (artists, slam poets, actors, musicians and other entertainers) will be awarded for their work — and you’ll get to see how they work it.

I’ll be on hand again this year to spot the best dressed; to help people make it hard for me to find the worst, I’d like to remind everyone to remember this is an only mildly formal event. While your ratty jeans and flip-flops aren’t appropriate, you don’t have to bust out your old high school prom gown — ladies can opt for a little black dress, and men, slim black pants, a jacket and tie will be just fine.

Purchase tickets for the event via the Omaha Performing Arts’ Ticket Omaha at omahaperformingarts.org.
