From our fun, furry friends at iconsoffright.com... THE GHOULIGANS! 'The Ghouligans' DVD is a 50 minute feature (mostly in black and white) collecting the "Slack Packs" short film series of 'THE GHOULIGANS'. It's essentially a bunch of fun shorts that feature all the classic characters – Dracula, The Wolf Man, Frankenstein and puts them in odd situations of today. Think 'The Munsters' and 'Groovie Goolies'. Over all, I really LOVE the idea of 'The Ghouligans'. I feel that this particular sub-genre of horror isn't being done by anyone these days. And that's a shame, because I grew up on re-runs of 'The Munsters' and 'The Addams Family'. Sure, I like serious horror too, but every once in a while, I really just want to have fun with scary ghouls! For example, what would trick or treating be like at Dracula's house? Or even trying to buy a car from him? Does Frankenstein have car trouble? And how do you teach a ghoul to dance? There's even a short color short that starts out played as a "real" zombie flick, but (I think) quickly illustrates the point that "Fast Zombies Suck". This disc collects a ton of these guys shorts, so some are hit or miss. In fact, my only problem with it is that by the time I really got into some of the ideas and scenarios being played out, they were over! Regardless, this is a fun disc for people looking for some non-serious horror themed fair. Perfect for Halloween night screenings. I really hope these guys eventually make a 'Ghouligans' feature length. Something I can really get invested in, because I see the potential for something really funny and great from these characters. –Robg.

From VideoVista.net, November 2006: RATING: 6/10 reviewed by Paul Higson This is harmless enough! The Ghouligans are a gang of teenage monsters, well, they were at least teenagers when they pegged out, retaining youthfulness but also making eternal their delinquency too. Count Farnham (Justin Hertz) should be the natural ringleader but no one is in charge of this Halloween bunch. Wolfgang (Pete Bune) is the hip black werewolf. We like him! Mike Ulser is Boris, the reactivated body parts, whilst Sean King's Void takes the opposite direction and, as the resident zombie, has a habit of shedding limbs. The history of these short films is unknown to me but they run various lengths and there is differing quality to the make-up and technical standard. The quality of the scripts gives rise to the notion that it was a learning process. Modern in some of its humour, it still revels in and successfully pays homage to the 1960s' film and television monster fun and the horror pantomime of some of the garage rock bands of the era. One suspects that the makers were aiming to syndicate with MTV and the standard ought earn them that, though some of the sketches fall horribly flat. There are a couple of big laughs along the way, and I will not steal all of them by recounting all here. Besides, most of the funniest are visual gags. Maybe it's an old joke, it was new to me, but I had to laugh at the sketch which began with Boris, the frankenscience monster turning down a date to the dance because he has two left feet... quite literally, two left feet. The sketches are black-and-white but for the one, and the reason for that is, again, one of the better comedy pay-offs. It draws primarily on the monster kid amateur films of the 1960s, the 8mm mini love letters to the creature features and the Don F. Gluts dragstrip denizens, but The Ghouligans! also confess their fondness for The Munsters, Mad Monster Party, The Groovin' Ghoulies, AIP and beach blanket bop movies. They go down to the shore and a monster (name of Salty) that may have had The Horror Of Party Beach for a pa and The Creature From The Haunted Sea as a ma rises from the surf. King and Ulser are predominantly the writers and have a penchant for applying fun names for its community of characters. Ghoulfriends, beat chicks, monster acquaintances and local thugs go by names like Gia, Gi-Gi, Greta, Diamond Dazzle, Bo Mummy, Robit X, Johhny Juvie, Dee Dee Sleeves, Herbeche Villa Lobo and Harry Hair. The music is rock 'n' roll, psychobilly and surf guitar, and you should be bobbing to it, Paul Lamo chiefly composing the tracks with the Sonics and the Duponts supplying additional numbers. Blips aside, they are having fun and so will you. Timely for All Hallows and at only 60 minutes perfect for the kids' Halloween DVD programming schedule. There is not much more to be said. From the fine freaky folks at BLOODY-DISGUSTING.COM...REVIEW Long Island natives, The Slack Pack bring their off the wall brand of cable access shorts to a DVD compilation of some 20 odd adventures. THE GHOULIGANS are like The Munsters with a Garage Rock aesthetic. Clips range from short to super short, some only seconds of outrageously brilliant footage. With manic surf guitar and both new and old school Rockabilly sounds infecting the background—THE GHOULIGNAS might just be the hippest hepcats to ever hit the screen. Mostly shot in black and white digital video, each vignette follows some or all of a family of freaks—Count Farnham, Void, Wolfgang and Boris—getting through their daily lives. Whether that involves tuning up the car, verbally sparring with some trick-or-treaters or picking out the best duds for a howling good night on the town, THE GHOULIGAN'S do everything with a decidedly satirical manner. It's clear that the Slack Pack is having the last laugh here. Founded in 1997 by a group of avowed film and music junkies, THE GHOULIGANS may just be the master contribution to their own brand of irreverent pop culture cinema. It's self-referential and silly while paying tribute to some of the greatest in 1960's cheese television. And when I say "pay tribute" I mean that inside all the wry humor is a reasonably well made series of shorts. The characters may be wacky and the situations as incomprehensible as virtually anything Herman Munster got himself into, but the respect shown to that kind of simple naiveté is what makes the films engrossing. The Slack Pack is currently trying to shop the idea of this show out in the hopes to get a sitcom on the air. I for one would line up for GHOULIGANS any day of the week, so here's hoping that some smart ass studio exec somewhere with a penchant for the weird and wily work of these retro-mavericks takes them up on their generous offer to bring back some of the quirk to the staid and vastly disappointing primetime landscape. By Tex Massacre More reveiws coming soon!
