If any of you readers are familiar with my music, you probably know my song "Two Birds". Sunday, I was singing at Marty and Susan's house concert (opening for Linda McRae!), and as I finished playing the song, two birds were singing back and forth to each other, in the peaceful countryside, crisply and clearly, as if on cue. The amazing listeners in the room fully understood the beauty of this moment and let the birds sing for several moments before applauding. I can't describe in words how that moment touched me, but it was truly magical.

Yep, American Songwriter has listed yours truly as 29 in their "Top 50 Amateur Songwriters" in this month's issue! "Good Hand, Bad Gun" appears to be my current hit, and it will be recorded and all shiny and ready for mass consumption sometime this spring.
2008 is starting off strong!

To my pleasant surprise, Buffalo Spree Magazine's readers and panelists voted me up to 2nd place in the Jazz Act category for this year's Best of Western New York roster. I've only been moonlighting on the jazz scene for a few months now with Billy Brandau and Jim Hazelet (aka The Billy Baroo Jazz Trio and/or The Funny Valentines) so in a way this came out of the blue. But I admit, it's a nice validation that I'm doing something right! Please visit The Funny Valentines on Myspace and give a listen...and be our friend if you're not already!

I have some exciting news: my song "Good Hand Bad Gun" was awarded Honorable Mention in the American Songwriter magazine lyric contest! Of course I would have loved to have received 1st, 2nd, or even 3rd place, but honorable mention is still quite a feather in my cap.
The song is almost finished being recorded and will be posted on Myspace as soon as the final mix is released. Chris Nagy at Select Sound Recording Studios in Buffalo invited me to be a "model artist" for a Midi/Protools class that he teaches, and his students are working on the final touches of beats and loops to give "Good Hand Bad Gun" a modern "indie-folk-rock" kind of sound.
The funny thing is, American Songwriter printed the song title as "Good Han Bad Gun", but they spelled my name and website right so I forgive them. The issue hits the newsstands in about a week.

Current mood: ecstatic
As I'm doing a little dance here in my cubicle at Yorkville, I'm writing to let you know that I won the Original Solo Acoustic category at the Buffalo Music Awards! Some people say "ah it's just a popularity contest", some say "ah it's all about politics", but I say that 1) I have never been "popular" and 2) I didn't kiss anyone's butt....which means that I won because people voted for me because maybe they truly like my music and songs. It's a small bit of validation that I think every musician craves whether they admit it or not.
Thanks so much for your support!
