As you may question why you wish to pursue a quest in one of the most difficult of industries,

Is it a blessing, gift or career?

In fact it's all three don't you think?

It's a blessing if you honestly feel in your heart that you are unsure as to why this passion is so strong, you totally dedicate yourself to it, and your creative side won't let it go!

This is because you have been blessed with the fact you can perform or play, sometimes both! Being original is a blessing in itself, as many artists simply sample, steal or borrow from elsewhere for inspiration; you create your own platform to expose your emotion to song or musical composition.

It's a gift that has been given to by your own faith, God and even genetic pass down.

Unless someone else recognises your gift, it can be a lonely experience trying to fit in, well, the trick is you don't need to fit in but to recognise that, others who may come into contact with your gift, may just like it enough to buy into it, support it and give you the reassurance that what you have is unique to you and you only and that's what makes it special.

As a career, this is the hardest part, how can you truly earn a living from it, people are sometimes harsh and may say; "why don't you just get a proper job?"

The fact is, what they don't know is your music is important enough to you to sacrifice all the luxuries for the one moment where opportunity meets dedication, and that can change everything in one instant! Its not the elusive record deal, it's the moment when they all catch up with the fact that you have believed in yourself for a long time, and with that perseverance you have met an opportunity where new people can now hear your talent in a whole new way, without judgement and buy your Cd today!!

So many singers and musicians feel the only way to become successful in music is to appear on reality talent shows on television or by simply doing something outrageous to become successful.

Well, that simply doesn't cut it anymore!  If you're just looking for a claim to fame, then that's all that people will remember you for and you reduce your credibility as a serious artist. 

So many "winners" with real talent have just disappeared into obscurity and never really realise their true potential as an artist.  They get caught up in the hype of the show and become a parody of what The Judges want them to be for entertainment purposes.  Without developing their own personal style, they can't sustain their popularity once the hype has died down.  They come away with their 3-seconds of fame but they haven't actually created a unique positioning for themselves or built a loyal audience who really appreciates their personal musical style. 

There are artists who have used Reality TV shows to their advantage to open up opportunities but they have made them their own.  Take Lemar, for example.  He didn't "win" and therefore walked away with his personal integrity in tact and a choice over how he managed his career.  Similarly, Will Young used his exposure as a vehicle to launch his career but has now gone on to do his own thing whereas Gareth Gates had his moment in the spotlight and then simply disappeared.
