Jasiri X-Exhibit X

I dare you to listen to this song all the way through and say I didn't kill it.

The Bloggers Made Me Do it. Why I Rocked the "Exhibt C" Instrumental

First of all I love "Exhibit C"! Just Blaze's incredible gritty yet soulful production and Jay Electronica's raw no nonsense lyricism make this the song of the year in my opinion. The song's success as well as Raekwon's Only Built for Cuban Linx Part 2 truly renewed my faith as an artist, because they both proved if you make great Hip-Hop music, people will support it. I especially felt "Exhibit C" because Jay Electronica is spittin bar after bar of consciousness, something that is sorely missing in today's rap landscape. To echo Just Blaze, "we need something realer".

Recently  "Exhibit C" became available on itunes along with the instrumental (go cop that). I heard a few MCs take a run at the track with mixed results, but what really caused me to take notice was the response of the bloggers to their attempts. The attitude of the blogosphere was NO MC should even attempt to spit over the instrumental because nothing could compare to Jay Electronica's verses. Now to say Jay bodied the track is a understatement he cremated it no doubt but NO MC? As someone who feels I got some lyrical skill to offer I started writing.

Initially I just wanted to see what I could come up with, but then the bars kept coming . As I began to share what I was writing to close friends the response was overwhelming positive so I kept going. I decided to put Exhibit X out for a few reasons, first to pay homage to what I thought was a exceptional song by a great artist and a great producer. Secondly, because the nature of my online news show This Week With Jasiri X, I never really get to just spit a freestyle verse so this was as good an opportunity as any. The last reason being , I felt I murdered this beat, now I'm NOT saying I outdid Jay Electronica, I just feel like I came with straight fire.

As with any song I do me and my brother Paradise Gray discussed doing a video. But because Jay Electronica has not put a video out yet and it's his song I thought that would be kinda disrespectful. Thanks again to Jay and Just Blaze for the inspiration, it kinda makes me wanna put out a whole CD of me just burning down instrumentals. Yall might see that sooner than later.

LYRICS
In 2010 yall gone call me Jasiri Xtra
That rapper eating other rappers rap version of Dexter
son's God like Nas with that black burner on the dresser
run up in ya college class murder the professor
that stuck needles in ya mind every time that you heard a lecture
the J and the X so yall know its my year
when that ball drops in times square It is my time squared
The hereafter for his followers is now I'm there
The reason that ya not cause ya stopped by blind fear
find the nearest garbage put ya rhymes right there
me and my mics like ya skinny jeans a real tight pair
Einstein in blackface minus the white hair
better yet god resurrected in flesh like Christ appeared
who's nice as this not even ya grandmother
Mcs don't understand they just stand under
and we aint controversial but scared niggas ran from us
like we was court appointed handing out a damn summons
X-Clan coming call me Brother J jr.
cause all you hear bout them is just another gay rumor
summers in suede Pumas winters I'm Tim bootin
the industry ain't dumb it down them rappers been stupid
and I ain't here to name lames or try and play the blame game
you know it's time to change lanes when millionaires gang bang
feeling like Charlemagne rappers are satanic
we on the battlefield in ranks standing with raised cannons
ready to blaze at em I'm raps William Wallace
spirit of Bob Marley how long they gonna kill our prophets
New millennium Noah God told me to build a rocket
and get the greatest rapper alive to fill the cockpit
sitting all alone in the cone of that steel object
so when the earth is flooded ya brother is still rockin
Jay Smooth ill doctrine articulate like Dr Marc Lamont hill talkin
labeled hypocrite cause I'm a grave digger that fills coffins
call it contra-diction
a monster spittin proper rhythms with conscious vision
imagine Mike Tyson the boxier hittin ya face you droppin spinnin
then black boots start to stomp ya ribs in
the consequences of thinkin that your my competition
Professor x yall still paying college tuition
and how the hell ya got a Farrakhan aurora
when ya stat sheet is faker than them Barry Bonds homers
with no entourage its just me and the Arkitech
joust with the hardest track lance and my Armour black
fresh water flow Phillip Rivers like that changers cat
you be the king I'm the God of rap honor that
rappers are softer than them dudes that dance behind Madonna's back
mcs trying to be weirder than lady Gaga's hats
Bambaataa lookin like I know I ain't father that
Inglorious Bastards I'm Bear Jew with a harder bat

A staff writer at one of the top the largest black gossip websites www.Bossip.com posted Jasiri X's new Video "Dear Debra" with the following spin:

Random Ridiculousness: “Dear Debra Lee” Video

Posted by Bossip Staff

"Some kid really has a Love Jones for Debra Lee, CEO of BET. We couldn’t believe it at first…then we peeped the video and the rapper Jasiri X’s steez.
Pop it and watch this comedy"

Dear Debra - A Letter To Debra Lee

Is this dude serious?"

--end--

What followed was one of the most incredible out pourings of support that I have ever seen on the internet for a new artist (and I have been on the internet promoting music since before MP3.com!) It brought a tear to my eye to see the way people stood up and represented for intelligent, conscious Hip-hop music that is Hot!

They keep saying that buffoonery and street/drug/murder music is what the people want to hear! I think that the entire conversation is showing that plenty of people are rebelling against the kinds of negative imagery and coon lyricism that BET and all these "HOT" whatever radio stations have been poisoning our youth with.

20 years ago the same kind of revolt took place leading up to the popularity of Public Enemy, X-Clan, KRS1, Poor Righteous Teachers etc...

How can we promote and sustain a movement towards more conscious music and videos is the next question?

You ever see that blog Stuff White People Like? Well, blackface should most definitely be on that list. For whatever reason some whites love to paint their faces black and then express profound shock when black people get offended. Now to be fair, Asians will get in on the foolishness as well. Which makes me wonder how in 2009 seemingly intelligent people can be so offensive yet "oblivious" at the same time.

In the recent high profile incident of blackface on a variety show in Australia, the offending party, who referred to themselves as the "Jackson Jive" were all medical doctors. And, I'm sure the people who run French Vogue are experienced professionals. My brother Paradise just reminded me about Halloween coming up and how each year some college fraternity throws a blackface bash whose pictures always seem to make it to the latest social networking site.

Which leads me to the million dollar question, Why? Can we just say it's racism and close the case? Is it maybe some deep seeded psychological problem? I can tell you one thing, it damn sure ain't funny. The country is already divided and the fire of hate is being fed 24-7 by the right wing flunkies at Fox News. Why throw a bucket of gasoline on it just to amuse yourself and get a few chuckles form your friends. Is it really worth a potential beat-down if you run into the wrong person? Plus the way things tend to resurface on the internet that blackface may soon become permanent.

Warning, some users may experience an increase in vision, hearing and learning and in extreme cases may develop mental stimulation that lasts longer than 4 hours!

Now that I have your attention, the new video "What's Peace" by Jasiri X was just uploaded:

Jasiri X's videos should really appeal to everyone who has ever complained about the lyrics and/or negative images in Hip-hop music.

Well now is your chance to finally do something about it. Play this hot video featuring Jasiri X's ill lyrical skills, searing commentary about the meaning of peace and the audacity of giving out a "Peace Prize" in a world so violent. Turn it up and bob yo head, the beat is another banger from Pittsburgh's own legendary super producer Black Czer! Then forward this email to all your friends and tell them how incredible' it is!  Then Tweet it, share it on Facebook and Myspace, Go the full distance and text it also!

The more people that play it, the more people will like it and just maybe, we can start a trend towards intelligent, conscious Hip-hop that isn't corny or stiff.

How about we give it a try and really send it to your lists, like so many people regularly send out ignorant, woman exploiting, self hating, murder music.

Jasiri X, it's Hip-hop that won't eat your brain!

This Week With Jasiri X-Episode 20

Whenever we witness horrific tragedies like the cold-hearted murder of our brother Derrion Albert, this society seeks to assign blame, instead of accessing the problem. Therefore much of the discussion after watching Derrion’s shockingly brutal beating was whose fault was it. So we all begin to search for scapegoats, whether we say it’s the parents for failing to raise them right, the schools for failing to teach them right, the religious institutions for not doing enough to reach out to them, or rap music for promoting sex and violence. Some have even called for the National Guard, anything to absolve ourselves of any work or responsibility.

But the late great Michael Jackson said it best in the song, “Man in the Mirror”, “who am I to be blind pretending not to see their needs”. We know many parents are struggling, whether it’s with employment, single parent households, drug abuse, or being teen parents. We know the schools are getting worse especially after Bush took a wrecking ball to them called “No Child Left Behind”. We know religious institutions in a large part are getting older and out of touch with today’s youth. And we damn sure know that a majority of what passes as rap music and ends up on the radio is violent and misogynistic.

If anything Derrion Albert’s death should show us that we can’t just keep our head in the sand and think just because we’re personally doing OK that the suffering of the masses of our people won’t touch us. Derrion was a honor roll student who loved school, attended church and couldn’t wait to go to college, but because his environment didn’t foster these same ideals he fell victim to the mean streets of the “hood”. Just a few days earlier a 5 year old was shot and killed here in Pittsburgh. What did he do to instigate his death? I remember vividly the last time I visited Chicago (my hometown by the way) I received a frantic call that one of my cousins was shot, he had just graduated high school and like Derrion was eagerly awaiting college. He was on his way home from his job when he was caught in the crossfire of two rival gangs. It is only by the grace of God he’s still alive, and needless to say he wants to stay at school rather than come back home to Chicago.

What I’m saying is that all of us are to blame. We know the problems and many of us do little to nothing to help. If we start with the “Man in the Mirror” we can all do so much more to effect a positive change in our communities. But we truly must start now because our lives and the very lives of our children may depend on it.

Jasiri X on the roof of the David L. Lawrence Convention Center-site of the G-20 Summit-Photo by Paradise Gray

Pittsburgh was the host city the G-20 Summit that took place September 24th and 25th and of course me and Paradise were on the scene. Once I found out the G-20 was coming I immediately began to think about creating an episode. People had been asking me about This Week With Jasiri X and when it would return so I thought why not come back with a bang, when the whole world would be watching Pittsburgh.

The concept of the song, "The Only Color That Matters is Green" is dealing with how these few wealthy families and countries set policies that negatively effect the rest of the world. That to them we are not a race or religion or from the hood or the country were just another person that can be exploited. But being the G-20 would be in Pittsburgh we also wanted to show the "Real" Pittsburgh.

Leading up to the G-20 the leadership of the City of Pittsburgh was spinning Pittsburgh like it was this recession proof city with little unemployment and a "revitalized' economy. No doubt we got new stadiums and a casino but the majority of the people in our neighborhoods are suffering. Hell right across the bridge fro the Convention Center that hosted the summit is where homeless people sleep  . So in the video we made it a point to film there and also in a neighborhood called Homewood on Formosa Way.

Lastly and most hypocritically was the demonetization of the protesters. Maybe it's just how I think, but here are people that are actually organizing and bringing attention to issues that effect the average Pittsburgher, the need for good jobs, health care, affordable housing and an end to war. But yet they were portrayed as these destructive fools by the media. Yet the very people responsible for the global economic collapse that has made financially tough for almost everybody to get by, are treated like royalty and giver the VIP treatment. Plus weren't we all just praising and supporting the Iranian students for taking to the streets to protest the election and criticizing the Iranian government for it's crackdown? BTW all footage showing the Police attacking citizens happened in Pittsburgh, not a dictatorship, but the United States of America.

Yall know I'm a Media Literist. (Yeah I went Keith Murray on that one.) So when Glenn "Looney Tunes" Beck started to take shots at Van Jones I watched the situation very closely. Of course Van and Color of Change set it off on Beck costing him almost 60 advertisers and almost his job, but these Right Wing dudes do not lay down. Beck came out swinging with the heavy lumber, and because he's at Fox News the story just doesn't end with him no matter how ridiculous. Once it gained traction Hannity jumped in and then Bill O' Riley now you got a digital rumble. But instead of coming to his aid the White House let him fight it out himself. (I guess that's what you call tough love.) When I woke up Sunday Morning and found out Van had resigned I was VERY upset.

What made me so mad was Van was the closest thing to having ya partna in the White House. Now I don't know him personally but I do know he's a activist straight from the Hood, and everything Fox hated on him for made him that much more real in my eyes. Plus even with his activist street cred brother has a law degree from Yale and some of the most innovative ideas to help heal our community. That being said I've had about enough of Fox News lynching black men (primarily) and all people who speak truth to power. I mean Michael Jackson couldn't even catch a break! So since Fox is breakin out the big guns so am I, and yes I tried my best to wait to September 29 which is the This Week With Jasiri X Season 3 Premiere but I couldn't let another brother get crucified and remain silent. I gotta first give credit to the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan whose lecture, "The Crucifixion of Michael Jackson and All Responsible Black Leaders" was a major inspiration. Strong Shout Out to Paradise Gray who was behind the camera and Track Fiends Production for the hot beat!
