Current mood: cheerful
Hey kids On behalf of the SCUM crew i'd like to wish all our friends, family, people who've supported us and bands that have played for & with us throughout the year a safe, happy & fun christmas and new year.
It's been a great year for us, we've had our highs and lows but most of all we've enjoyed the music we love with our friends. Everyone is probably wondering what's going on with SCUM lately.... well, everything and nothing. We're having a break from shows over the last and next few months only because some of us are away living life. Chips, JD and a few of the other Citi Rock kids have just come back from a missionary trip to the Phillipines, so that took up most of December and i'll be in Canada for most of January snowboarding and finding balance in my life.
Our first shows back will be around March sometime. But untill then we have a lot to plan and sort out. Future goals for SCUM include setting up a permenant venue in Maroochydore, so it's something we're all striving and working hard towards. Eventually this permenant venue will be a youth centre, indoor skate park and a central place for everyone to hangout, relax, jam, record, make art, make friends.... the list goes on. Exciting times!
On the hardcore front: It's pretty obvious to say that grass roots hardcore is far from cool anymore. The second half of this year we've seen numbers at our shows and many others rapidly decline. As a promoter this is a hard pill to swallow because we want to see our scene grow and expand. Not to mainstream global dominance levels, but to a point where the scene will be able to support itself. When it's not been supported from the very bottom it makes things extremely hard to secure the bands that everyone wants to have come and play here, we just can't justify bringing out international/interstate bands if the support isn't there.
However, personally, i'm not worried at all by the lack of people and support. I can see that the kids who have stuck around and shown their support are the true kids who'll always be around. We don't have fakes, posers and outright losers at our shows anymore.... everyone is here for the right reasons and that puts a smile on my face. Although i've been around long enough to know that sooner or later it will be cool again a we'll have a new flood of kids trying to buy scene points. These things happen, so for now i'll enjoy what we have.
The promising thing is, I know SCUM has built a strong foundation over the last 2 years and it's something we can all be proud of and continue to build upon.
On that note, personally i'd like to thank the moshpit boys for their continued support of our shows and the scene in general, at times they're the only thing sticking this all together and they've done it all for you. Chips, Zoe, Lee, JD, Jesse, Mum dad & everyone elses parents who've helped out in any way, Allan & Citi Rock and all the church people who I don't know, Jordan, Greg Bower, Curtis, Zanesha, Pride of place boys, Greg against, matty c, all the bands who's played with and for us and all the kids who continiously turn up to our shows (no matter how short a notice we give haha)
Thanks scottyxxx
P.S. Anyone who wants to come and hang with us, just give us a yell. Over the next few months we'll be freebording (snowboard simulation) and skating most nights and generally just hanging out doing summer stuff.

Hey kids, Chips and I have decided to try get a photo of everyone at the end of each show (like we did last night)... just so we can document everything and so everyone has something to look back on and be proud of (just like allan said). So next time you're at one of our shows stick around after the bands have finished and we'll take a couple of quick snaps and then ..... stacks on chips! And we'll hopefully find someone with a decent camera next time too haha... remind me to take mine and we'll be fine. Scotty

Hey kids, A big shoutout to everyone who came to the show on saturday @ Noosa! Despite security bailing on us at the last minute it went without a hitch and we thank everyone for your support! It was one of those shows that I know everyone who was there wont forget for a long time to come, this is the type of show we strive for.... sing-a-longs, smiles on 150 faces, plenty of laughs and good times. No tough moshpits, fights, boozed up losers or fashion parades. It's safe to say music was the big winner and that's how it always should be. Live Today was amazing... that's all I have to say about that. Thanks again scotty

It's time for me to clear up some things about us and Orion Entertainment. Let it be known that we (SCUM, Chips & I) are not "anti-orion", but we're also not so stoked on some questionable things that have been going on.
For the record, we like and welcome other people/promoters putting on hardcore shows on the sunny coast, who the fuck are we to say who can and can't promote a show right!
There's a few reasons why chips and I decided to start SCUM. The main reason is because the sunny coast scene by the end of 2005 was all but dead. And if you've been around for long enough you'll know that the main reason behind this was because new liquor licensing laws restricted all ages shows been held at licensed venues. On the Sunshine Coast, a licensed venue is not allowed minors on premises what-so-ever. SOME licenses permit that each child be accompanied by an adult. Therefore, the usual venues, like sands tav and the pig n whistle weren't allowed to hold these shows anymore.
Chips and I have been involved in this scene in one way or another for a LONG time, (I'm not going to get into a "who's cock is bigger" contest because that's something Hennas would do) and we weren't prepared to lie down and accept that was the end. Some day through mid 2005 (probably a Wednesday) we got talking about getting the scene back on its feet and get some regular shows and bands just like what Greg did with Northcoast hardcore in April 03. So for a few months we went through a lot of crap looking for venues with owners who could trust us, reliable security, insurance, funding etc etc you name it we had a HARD time of it, doors closed on us, laughed at, all but spat in the face. But boohoo right! Eventually we held our first shows March/April 2006 and have done everything by the book despite all of the tight protocols. Now almost a year later we're still sorting out the best way to run a show.
There's a few other people who've gone a long way out of their way to help us and the live music scene too. The Moshpit boys have been doing their thing for years and they do it for little to no money. Spend your money there, they're a central hub for bands, promoters and fans alike and every dollar you spend there helps everyone.
Having said that, it's time to shed some light a couple of things that have been said and done of late.
The Lies: 1. Orion states the Friday 23rd charity show was moved to Price st because the owner of the venue 'The Coach House' said "hardcore/metal crowds are to rough" to be held there.
2. Orion Entertainment has a "Network of Schools" on the Sunshine Coast willing to let them play shows at.
3. Orion Entertainment is stopping because of being pressured by SCUM.
The Truth: 1. Friday 23rd show was initially booked at a licensed venue "The Coach House". Elliot booked this venue knowing full well about the liquor licensing laws. I know because I told him a few months ago. He has since tried to say the show was moved because 'The Coach House' said "hardcore/metal crowds are to rough". This is bullshit, the show was moved Wednesday morning after the venue owner was contacted by police & liquor licensing. Both Elliot & the venue were well aware of what they were doing and were extremely lucky. The liquor license for this venue states every minor must be accompanied by an adult , No live music and only background noise/music after 9pm. The repercussions of holding a show at this venue could have been disastrous for the whole scene let alone them. Both would have been fined massive amounts, and who knows what else could have happened. Venues, council, police, liquor licensing would come down on everyone trying to put on shows in the future and touring bands would all hear shit about how the sunny coast scene is shifty for whatever reasons yadda yadda. It could have been a big fuck up!
2. Orions "Network of Schools" is a pile of crap. As some of you may know, Chips is a teacher at one of the schools on orions list and hasn't heard anything about shows been put on. Also, Orions blog is a fucking disgrace, if he had a blue card he would be locked up for some of the things he wrote. Let it be known, this blog has now being forward on to the listed schools and they will do what they want with the information. Bands should not have to pay anyone to play a show. That's how a 'promoter' makes money… not supports a scene.
3. I've been told Orion is going to put on only a couple more shows and then stop because we (SCUM) have been pressuring them. What a joke, this is the first I've said anything to anyone other than zoe, chips, jd, lee and my girlfriend about this. And don't think that this is pressuring him into anything. I'm simply letting everyone know what they should know, both sides of the story…. the truth.
Chips and I have worked too bloody hard to have it all come crashing down again because someone isn't willing to learn by what we've been through and take their time in helping rebuild the scene and their own organisation. Like I said before, we've been around for a long time and we're here for the love of it, NOT the popularity, 14 year old girls and certainly not the money.
If Elliot sincerely wants to help the scene he'll pull his act together and start doing things the same way everyone else does… by the book. I don't give a fuck who puts on a show, just don't fuck it up for everyone else.
