Hellou!
This is a gig report of Corpsefest from my point of a view, with the generous help of my brother Eero.
We had rehearsed for over 7 hours a day in a three days period and so we were sure that our Corpsefest gig would kick some ass! We would be the headliner for the first time and there was this Thrash Metal group called Tormentor Squad from ..:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Lahti and ever-talented Inferior from Hämeenlinna about to warm up the crowd for us. The day started just well – we were right on time and headed to the Arx-house to Hämeenlinna.
At Arx arrangements went pretty smoothly and everything was pretty much in order. We did sound check and it couldn't be better. Soon the two other bands showed up and after their sound checks we all were ready for the evening. It was time get some lunch.
We spotted a grill right next to Arx and lunched there. Food was otherwise ok but Jesus Christ I it was the hottest kebab of all times! It still feels that my mouth is on fire, not mentioning my ass. Fuck the shit I must say. And of course; we bought hell of a lot beer for the after parties since it is not allowed to be drunk at Arx. – Though I think there was a bit strange flavour in the energy drinks of Inferior.
After a couple hours of wasting some time the first headbangers started to show up. Doors opened at 7:30 PM and Tormentor Squad was about to thrash half an hour later. So when it was eight a clock I stepped to the stage and welcomed everyone to the festival. After that I made room for TS so that they could warm up the place a bit. And that's for sure what they did.
Sounds were a bit messed up with TS but guys played well. Tempos were over 200 BPM all the time and I still wonder how someone can beat drums like Rickhard without a break. After 40 minutes Tormentor Squad finished their task and it was a time to change the backline a bit for Inferior. Tormentor Squad is one hell of a Thrash Metal machine.
Inferior entered the stage at 9:00 PM and you could tell that the band really had their fans there! Inferior threw a kickass show and the atmosphere was awesome: An aggressive pit rolled, people moshed and die hard's even crowd surfed. Hometown boys really shook the place. It would be hard for us to raise the level after their showdown!
Then the clock turned to 10:00 PM and it was our time to show what we got. When Inferior had finished some metal fellows left the Arx but it was a pleasure to see that a lot of headbangers stayed – and not all of them were just our friends. And so we gathered up to psyche ourselves for the gig, and promised that we would give the audience what they wanted. We were in a mood for kill. Ville said something a bit gay back there and then we entered the stage.
Set begun with a real hardcore-attitude: Corpses Crushed Under A Tank opened the game as always and it was awesome. We couldn't have felt better. After that there was time for a three-songs-in-a-row medley which started with ever-aggressive Napalm Rain. Napalm Rain was followed by a cover song and then something horrible happened…
The worst case scenario: The first time ever we forgot our backup guitar and ESP:s A-string snapped while Eero was soloing. Holy shit fuck cunt! (Eeros thoughts: "When the string broke down I felt like I was about to smash the whole fucking guitar into the ground and piss on it! Well, then I remembered that that's my only guitar and I have no money, so that's about it".) Ville told a couple of jokes and I threw my Les Paul to Eero and headed to the backstage to ask whether someone would have a dropped C-tuned guitar. No one did. With empty hands I returned to the stage and after a twenty second speculation we decided that Eero will be the Casket member playing the guitar tonight (since Eero is the one who does almost all the leads). And what did I? I took my place next to Ville and grapped the microphone for backing vocals and started to mosh.
We continued our set – though feelings were maybe a bit frustrated. But we didn't even get to the chorus of the next song when we all realised that the gig would turn out great anyway! Audience was fucking awesome and Eero did amazing job with just one guitar! Ville, Juhis and Maksi were also on fire! I did some serious headbanging and growling with Ville who understood the matter of the situation, and it was actually quite fun to do some vocals there: Every once in a while Ville left the responsibility of lead vocals for me and concentrated on commanding the pit. It was fucking hostile. We did every chorus together and I think that after all the result with just one guitar was surprisingly good – at least if it's believing to the audience! A special thanks to the guy who was mixing.
So even though we had "a little" affliction there and playing wasn't technically superb, in my opinion the gig at Corpsefest was one of the bests so far. Atmosphere and feeling were high through the evening. One sad thing was that we had to play a cover song instead of our brand new one because it would have definitely needed two guitars… But I'm pretty sure that the song will see daylight on our next gig which will be at May. (More about that when the time is right.)
After the gig we helped with cleaning the place and shook hands with everyone involved the festival. A big thanks to Arx, Riikkis and Päivi, Tormentor Squad and Inferior, The Chief Lehtonen, Keksa and Linda, and Anniina and Myyry. Thanks also to our crew: Team Corpse members; Sergeant Vaahtera, HC and Repe. Thanks to everyone who helped us!
…and the after parties?
Finally we dropped our gear to our rehearsal dungeon at 0:30 AM and then headed to Kataloinen for the after parties. We went straightway to sauna and had some beer. We ended up being divinely drunk. At dawn we were totally fucking lost.
Cheers,
Lauri (& Eero)
