The Lush - Lost In Between
Posted on 07/08/08 by Susan Frances
The Lush - Lost In Between
Record Label: None
Release Date: December, 2007

The Lush might not be played on your local rock radio station, but they definitely should be. The quartet from St. Louis, Missouri demonstrate a tight bond sonically with the familiar whiff of emo-rock on their debut EP Lost In Between. No matter how hard and aggressive The Lush play, they make every song sound like it was meant to be a heartfelt rock ballad. The guitar hooks of Alex Wilkinson are romantically bowed making brilliant archways over the melodic bedrock as lead singer Jeremy Tripp displays a voicing reflective of The Maine's John O'Callaghan. Bassist Andrew Dunn and drummer Gabriel Wilkinson vary their throngs of rhythmic strokes from cindering massively to glistening gently. There is so much in The Lush's content that it is nearly impossible to turn away from these tracks. The band make everything sound so good.

The Lush congeal their melodic lines beautifully through the rock ballad "Circles," with lyrics that make crisp judgments about human nature, "We find ourselves contented / We simply breathe until we stop / Not noticing our lives are lost / It's easy to see what hope can do / But only if you want it to / Me, I'm just a little short of what makes your perfect heart burn/ We'll break this chain if we carry on and on and on." They never cease being a cohesive team as their song "The Good Die Alone" is saddled with nu-metal wares, emo-rock provisions and power punk fringes that light up the track with revved up rhythms and buckets of power chords. The pristine hue of the chord flints in "Fake It Till You Make It" and "Taken With Empathy" are electrifying and erupt into volcanic slides as the rhythmic bolts fork into the running phrases with a concrete fist. The Lush vary their tempos from strolling softly to rushing furiously as the guitar patterns produce ringlets of flames that filter around Tripp's vocals. Their song "The Dissonance Between Us" tubes both tempo styles, starting off with a gentle opus that segues into raging floods and vocals that ride the torrential waves as skillfully as pro-boogie boarders on the ocean surf. Tripp fetches the swells and isobars like surfers and rides through the undulating lows and highs with fearless surges of energy.

The Lush may only have an EP out now, but it is enough to incite interest in their music. The band's handling of power chords is done with pro maneuvers and a concrete footing. Their playing is tight and laudable, even to pros in the industry. You definitely get your money's worth purchasing Lost In Between. Hopefully The Lush will not stop here.

Current mood:  content

Basically, if you wanna book us, we'll play ANYWHERE/ANYTIME for $125. This goes for birthday parties, venues, Thursday night Bingo, The Pageant, whatever you can throw at us. We don't care who we play to as long as we're playing. Rates are negotiable, but with gas being how it is, it has to be worth our while.

So, if you'd like a more personal and customized Lush experience, all you gotta do is ask. We love our fans and we're not above coming straight to you like a lot of bands these days.

And that's that!

The Lush – It means "beautiful." At least, that's what we like to think. More so than the somewhat negative connotation people can give it. In truth, none of us would touch a drop of alcohol. Not necessarily because of outstanding morals or beliefs, but instead because we don't really like the taste or what it does to our friends. We like to think we stand for a lot of things – putting our fans first, getting to know each and every one of them if they so desire. That's how the four of us met to begin with. We used to be friends. It didn't take long for us to become a family. Our story doesn't stray much from the average group of guys trying to "make it big" in a world that wants to keep you down. But where we differ is extraordinary.

Jeremy (vocals and guitar) played bass for former StL band, The Cause. They found success in St. Louis and most of the Midwest through a heavy touring regimen and constant hometown shows. Along with experience on how to lead a band to success, this is where Jeremy realized that this life was the kind of life he intended to lead. As things changed, the scene saw the ugly demise of The Cause. Once recovered, Jeremy immediately began to formulate how he could take St. Louis by storm and show them something they were craving – a high-octane live show, good recordings that are pure and not over-produced, and a group of guys that care not just about the music they give to their listeners, but also about the message it sends. If you've ever seen The Lush live, you too can be witness - Jeremy puts every ounce of himself into this band and its show.

The answer he was looking for came in the form of a childhood friend. Andrew (bass and vocals) and Jeremy had played in Little League together from the age of 9, but as mentioned before, things changed and they lost touch. They were reunited years later, when a mutual friend made them each realize that as time passed, they had each retained the same interest – a passion for music. As the tree branches, Andrew introduced Jeremy to the two people that would become the heart and soul of The Lush.

Gabe (drums and vocals) and Alex Wilkinson (guitar), brothers from South St. Louis, were known to their friends and acquaintances as being prodigies in their respected fields. Gabe, only 17 years old, has been playing drums for what seems like only a handful of years, but a better drummer there can't be found, boasting of his ability to perform what sounds like "double-kick" with only one foot. We like to think of Gabe as the backbone of The Lush. Not just because he's the drummer. Everyone knows that the drummer is the battery that drives a band. No, Gabe is our backbone because he often gets dragged into carrying our heaviest equipment. And not once have I ever heard him complain about it, even as he lifts our heavy Marshall cabs into the back of a truck on a 100+ degree day.

Alex Wilkinson is a story all his own. At the age of 15, he's accomplished more in the Rock scene than many do in a lifetime, becoming the co-captain of this "business." And don't by any means let the age fool you. If you're put-off or doubt for one second, the talent possessed by either Alex or Gabe, I put you to the challenge of simply listening to the lead line in "Circles" or the solo at the end of "Fake It 'Til You Make It" and keep in mind that Alex wrote them when he was 12 years old. Or have a listen to any of the drums fills in "The Good Die Alone" and just try to recreate them for yourself. These guys are no longer kids. And they haven't been for some time now. They are talents that are forcing the world to reckon with them. And chances are…they are better than you!

The four of us entrust our lives to each other. That's the kind of kinship we expected to have among each other. It's a certain chemistry that allows us to anticipate a movement during a jam session just by looking at each other. No words need be spoken. Just a glance says "pick it up," or "half-time, or even "don't do what your about to do…do this instead!" It's a kind of connection that allows all of us to become better as we continue to mature. We feel that we'll never be bound by our physical limitations as long as we continue to do this thing we love. When we play together, it just works.

"Lost In Between", our debut EP is set to release in late December of '07. The whole album was really a hodge-podge of ideas that occurred over the summer of '07. We see it as more of a life-long goal than a debut EP. We pulled out all the stops, bringing in cellists, pianists, a solo vocalist, and a choir, in our attempt to show the world our versatility. This is the album we've always wanted to create and we created it in our first attempt. That begs the question - "what can we possibly do next?"

The future of The Lush is a bright one. Even with our sweeping harmonies, catchy choruses, and melodic, yet soaring dual-guitar assault, the extent of our talents remains to be seen. Our intention is to have our second EP make "Lost In Between" sound like a joke. We want to be embarrassed to have created it. If that's not saying something, then I don't know how else to convey my message. In our nine short months (as of November 2007), we've developed wonderful friendships, recorded an album, and shared a stage with the likes of Mayday Parade, Josephine Collective, Amber Pacific, Monty Are I, The Junior Varsity, Street To Nowhere, not to mention some of St. Louis' biggest names – The Vanity Affair, Ava, Wait, Rushmore Academy, Fairwell, Nothing Still, Novella, and Machree. We're here to take the scene by storm. We're here to stay. So keep The Lush in your mind because soon you won't be able to forget us. We've only just begun.

The Good Die Alone

It's pack your bags and run and hide
I never thought I'd be alive
to see the day I had to say
I wasn't good enough for a girl like you
And as we share our sheets tonight
I think we both know...

Why doesn't it come so easy to be in your head?
(You stay calm and I'll be easy)

You'll burn my notes one by one
I'll breathe the smoke just for fun
The sulfur in my veins reminds me not to feel this way again

This has gone beyond my control
There are certain things I thought you knew
That made you so special
(What makes you so special)

Pre-Chorus

Chorus

And all I know is take
This is not the way I want to live at all
Everything we thought we knew we thought we had
Everything we thought we had turned out so bad

And all I know is take
This is not the way I want to end this call
Everything we thought we knew we thought we had
Everything we thought we had turned out so bad

Pre-Chorus

Chorus

Fake It Til You Make It

Let's keep the passion for one more night
We're both feeling indifferent yet interested in what comes to light
I'm so sorry that I'm "lost in the dark"
We'll make it work playing locate your heart
I haven't seen it, but you've got to remember
Anyone can do exactly what I do

Let's hope we don't pay for this
I hope you know...
I finally caught sight of your hidden agenda
I think we both can remember why the night's hard to get through

You told me once that I'd never change the past
Please excuse me but I'll sure as hell try
You told me once, I won't forget
You said it best. You "do know best"
You say spite like it's a bad thing
Oh, I hope you know...

Let's keep the light on for one more night
We're both feeling irrational and arrogant
and what comes to light is that one of us is just too perfect.
Is it really worth it to sacrifice everything we've been through?

Pre-Chorus

Chorus

And to my face you confess
I am your little project
I have finally found The Cause
I have finally found it

And this is where it ends
A simple test of what is faithfulness and loyalty
We'll chalk them up as casualties of war.

Taken With Empathy

It's twelve past three
Times winding down
Without delay your heading out
You blamed yourself
You blamed yourself

It's not your fault
You fell asleep that night
Face down in the pillow, you lost the fight
I'll grasp your hand, you'll hold on tight
Tonight we'll make it last
Your face is in the picture with the shattered glass
You'll still be there
You'll still be there

When you finally get what you need
I hope you see how much you meant to me
You meant to me

Chorus

You'll still be there
You'll still be there

Music Composed and Arranged by Alex Wilkinson and Gabe Wilkinson
Lyrics by Andrew Dunn
Performed by The Lush

Circles

I brush your hair back from your face
Will you tell if I pull too tight?
We can hardly stand alone
But we won't fall down.
And I'm turned inside out
Am I really that easy to read?
Are we shielded by what we can't see?
So we keep our symmetry.

You were never meant to know
What gave you the impression I'm whole?
We take time so time takes its toll
We belong in circles
You were never meant to know
We belong in circles
We hold ourselves accountable
We belong in circles

We find ourselves contented
We simply breathe until we stop
Not noticing our lives are lost
It's easy to see what hope can do
But only if you want it to.
Me, I'm just a little short of what makes your perfect heart burn.
We'll break this chain if we carry on and on and on

I'll wait for you.
You'll make your move
I'll take one step.
One chance we'll split.
I can barely count on me too.
I can barely breathe.

Chorus

(I'll wait for you, but only if you want me to)
We're all scared to have to feel something or let someone in.
You've successfully found your way under my skin.

Chorus

And what you were never meant to know...
It was all for you.

Music Composed and Arranged by Alex Wilkinson
Lyrics by Jeremy Tripp
Performed by The Lush

The Dissonance Between Us

Am I the thought you can't find?
Unspoken in the back of your mind
Kept safe off the tip of your tongue
Your habits of flattery won't motivate my sympathy
But as long as you'll try to deny your denial (You made me)
I'll be clear and concise
I'm the chill down your spine
Nothing's hidden except to be shown in embellishment

This is probably the last time I'll ever let you get so close
(This is my chance to get so close)
This is probably the last time I'll ever risk so much and get so little back
(This is mine)
If I've said it once, I've said it probably a thousand times.
And I'll say it all over and over again.

Maybe this is not the right way to go about this
Maybe it's just not my place to sink for your lips
It's a kiss between your eyes
and it's "how bad could this be"
When you lay down your flames doused in deep blue decadence
The weight on your back feels like the cross-borne found innocence
I whisper. Your ear resents.
My voice sounds so dissonant.
But my words and their eloquence
Make you and your tongue go deaf.

Chorus

All over again
All over again
All over again
I'll say it all over again
All over again

We're looking for a handful of super duper people to become our most precious and adored fans. These people will from henceforth be known as The Lush Militia. The duties of a street team member are as follows:

1.) Love us. (you'll get your chance soon enough)

2.) Spread the word.

3.) Sell tickets to shows. Sell 10 or more consistently and we'll give you FREE MERCH!! Sell 20 or more (even just once) and we'll pretty much do whatever you want because no prize I can offer you is good enough for that - so you name it.

4.) Keep spreading the word.

Ok, so the job isn't that hard...We just need some responsible and personable people who would be willing to become our go-to-guys/girls when we're in a crunch.

The Lush is solely about blowing your mind on stage. We want to put on the best show you've ever seen. Maybe you won't even remember the music because Andrew did a flip off of Gabe's chest...or perhaps Alex broke Jeremy's nose because he did a windmill. It could happen. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT.

If you're interested, either respond to this blog and we'll get back to you, or send us a message with an email address so we can keep everyone organized and together and get to work telling EVERYONE immediately! We'll have songs up withing the month for you to listen to, my lovelies.

Become a Lush Officer Today!!!!! We'll even give you a sweet title when we get things organized!!

An Army That Fights Together Wins The War!

in love and war, but mostly love,
