a quick update for June...

Just got back from some really fun shows in Louisiana!  I had a great time in Lafayette at The Blue Moon w/ Emelie Guidry and her band, and a great show at The Louisiana Music Factory in New Orleans.  I just posted a bunch of photos from these shows along with some from our recent 3rd & Lindsley show for you to check out!

Also, if you haven't seen the pictures from the latest shoot w/ Joe Hendricks, they are up as well.  We had a great time and got a lot of great stuff- he's one of my favorite photographers around!  You can find it all at www.myspace.com/KristenCothron and on Facebook as well.

Current mood:  working

While sifting through my inbox I ran accross another review for "Love Letters ..." that I either wasn't aware of, or totally forgot about from BVSReviews.com :) Anyway, thought I'd share, it's copied below. Seriously, Thanks Bruce!

In other news, things are coming along nicely with this batch of new songs we're doing in the studio! I'm loving working w. Ben Strano again! Photo shoot w/ Joe Hendrick was awesome! We had a great show at 3rd and Lindsley last week, too. Will post some pictures from that shortly. I can't wait to share all of these new things with you! Also, starting to book shows for the rest of the summer. Any requests or suggestions- send 'em my way!

Thanks,
Kristen

Kristen's Love Letters

Bruce Von Stiers

Hot looks and hotter vocals are the first two things that come to mind when I think of Kristen Cothron. Various members of the press have put Kristen in the same league as Fiona Apple and Norah Jones for her style, songwriting and vocals.

Kristen has an album out that mixes genres to bring an intriguing and entertaining listening experience. The album is called Love Letters From A Fool. She either wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on the album. The album has slices of pop, bits of alt pop and a touch or two of jazz.

The album has a play time of thirty nine and a half minutes. It was produced by Ben Strano, an Indie producer who has worked with ZZ Top, Peter Cetera and others artists in recent years.

The musicians on the album backing Kristen are very good. Pat Buchanan is on electric guitar. Tony Harrell is on keys and bass is provided by Alison Prestwood. Buchanan and Harrell worked on Trace Adkins' Chrome album. Prestwood has worked with a range of artists from Little Richard to Vince Gill. Prestwood was nominated (for the third time) for Best Bass Player at the 2007 Academy of Country Music Awards . Drums were done by Greg Morrow and Vince Santuro. Dan Baird played electric guitar on one of the songs. Other musicians who lent a hand were James Bevendam, Chris Carmichael and Leslie Guitar. Ben Strano also performed on the album. And Kristen played acoustic guitar as well as provided the vocals for the songs.

Dangerous is the first song on the album. It might just be a bit autobiographical as Kristen sings about how a “bad woman's got something that a good woman ain't” and that “I'm aware that I'm dangerous…desire is for the living.” Kristen has smooth yet sultry vocals in the song, a voice that would make guys want to meet her and their women to try to keep them away.

The second song is a bit of an alt blues tune. In fact, it's called High On The Blues. The vocals here are still smooth, with a bit of aching and hurting stitched into them.

A fun pop styled song is Last Chance Girl. Cool background music gives Kristen a good base for a toe tapping tune about trying to snag a guy. It's last call and if she could just catch his eye, she'd be his last chance girl.

The title track, Love Letters From A Fool, is an interesting song with strong strumming guitar. It's about sending letters, pouring out her heart without being truly reciprocated. Carrying a torch for someone who can't or won't accept it can be tough, as Kristen pours out her heart here proves.

Soft rock music ala Tom Petty backs Your Love. Silky and sultry, the vocals on this one kind of gave me a chill.

Moody jazz and pop music are in RSVP. This song could play on both jazz and pop radio.

Slow Down is kind of an alt folk styled song, kind of like something Norah Jones might do.

Whenever You Come Around is another nice jazz styled song. Light but sultry vocals make this a fan favorite at dates where Kristen performs.

Love Is A Gamble is a guitar laden piece that is a bit Southern Rock and a bit of Delta Blues.

Fall is the last song on the album. It has a nice piano background. The vocals here are aching, with Kristen singing that it will be hard to forget him.

Kristen Cothron has immense talent. Her songs range from pop to jazz and a bit of the blues. Her songwriting may be a bit autobiographical, and even if not, then Kristen still tells a great story in each song. Kristen has a sultry voice that can fit in any format even though this album contains mostly pop and jazz styled songs. And the fact that Kristen grabbed top notch musicians to play on the album proves that she takes her music seriously.

You can hear samples of Love Letters From A Fool on Kristen's web site. The site is www.kristencothron.com . Or check out her MySpace Music site at www.MySpace.com/kristencothron.

Hey Everyone,

Hope you're all enjoying the Holidays!   I just wanted to send a little update.  You may have noticed I've been performing and traveling a lot less than usual.  My recovery from the wreck back in July has made it difficult for me schedule and book as I'd like to.  I'm not going anywhere, though, and I can't wait to be gigging in full swing in the coming months!

In the meantime, I have a couple of new projects that I hope you'll enjoy!  The first is a Jazz EP that features some of my favorite jazz tunes performed with my favorite Nashville players- Daniel Ellsworth, Jason Oettle, and Elliott Lopes.  We recorded it here in town this past summer at Enhanced Studios- www.myspace.com/EnhancedStudios.  You can preview and purchase it through paypal on the main website www.KristenCothron.com.

The second project is "Crazy Blues: A Celebration of Okeh Recordings." Okeh Records began as an independent label in 1918; from the late 1920s on, it was a subsidiary of Columbia Records.  Many classic performances by the likes of Mamie Smith, Hattie McDaniel, and Louis Armstrong were recorded by Okeh.  "Crazy Blues" features Regina Spektor, Jon Abercombie, Chris Barron and more.  I was so honored to be in such good company!   We all chose from songs in the Okeh catalogue and approached them from our own artistic view points.  I'm singing, "It's Sinful to Flirt," a 1925 Ernest V. Stoneman tune. For now, you can download it on iTunes and soon, the collection will be available through CDBaby and various other stores online.

I'm currently using this time off to focus on writing and working on new projects.   I'll be keeping in touch through this newsletter and on myspace, hopefully posting new songs here and there!

Thanks so much for your continued support!

-Kristen
