CAMPUS NEWS UPDATE SUN. 18-01-09

Hi y’all!

We know it’s been a while since you’ve had a proper update, and to tell you the truth, there wasn’t that much to tell. The past month we’ve all been really busy, most of us with stuff that isn’t exactly fun, but needs to be done anyway. But at least it gave us the chance to get a break from all of it, and think things properly through.

As a result of this wondering, we sat together and had a serious brainstorm about future plans and steps we want to be taking within the next year(s) or so. We can not tell you a lot about these thoughts, but we’ll be giving you the heads up more frequently the next couple of weeks so you can see (and read) were our heads are at, and how things are coming along.

Some of you may already know, but obviously we’re eager to tell you that this year on April 4th we’ll be playing RIOROCK festival in Ham (BE). We’ll be sharing the stage with trusted bands such as MADBALL and TEN FOOT POLE. Together with our friends from SIXTOYS and GINO’S EYEBALL, we’ll try to keep the Belgian pride up among all these international greats.

To talk international, we have to tell you that we’re currently planning 2 international tours within the next six months. Once we’ve got more information according venues and dates, we’ll let you know, and maybe we’ll see you around.

In the meantime we’ll be trying to get the writing train back on its rails, ‘cause like you all know, it’s a working progress. But we’ll keep you posted on how things evolve.

If you haven’t had the chance to buy our debut album ‘WE ARE THE SILENCE’, you now have the chance to buy it on iTunes for € 9.90. So go and check that out!

As you can see, our heads are packed with stuff to do, and we’re all so excited about getting it all properly done, and making it the best thing we ever did. So make sure you keep checking our blogs, bulletins and updates so you can catch up with us, ‘cause we’re not planning on standing still for a while.

We’ll talk to you soon!

CAMPUS DIARY
EUROPEAN SUMMER TOUR 2008
18th july – 2nd august

This is the beginning of our first European summer tour. We've all been looking forward to this so much and we're really curious about it because we just don't know what to expect from the tour. We'll be travelling in our own Campus van with 6 people (the band + Karsten, our sexy merch guy) for about 16 days packed with stuff like a camera, some beer and of course all our equipment and clothes. Intohimo from Sweden will join us on most of the dates (the first 4 dates are without these guys) and we're really happy to see the boys again because we already met them in Belgium a few months ago.

Friday 18th july 2008 – Musicon, Den Haag (The Netherlands)

On this day we were going to head for Den Haag (The Netherlands) and it was only our second show in this country since the beginning of Campus so we were really stoked about the show. We all gathered at 1 o'clock in the afternoon and left our hometown a bit later towards Den Haag.

After a two and a half hour drive (including a short stop on the way) we arrived at the venue around 4 o'clock and got ourselves something to eat together with a friend of ours from The Netherlands. After this we met the promoter and took our gear into the venue because the other bands were also playing on our backline.

The show was really cool and it was a very good warm-up for the upcoming 15 days. People were really positive about our stuff and we sold some merchandise as well. We saw some really good bands that night and met awesome people. We sure want to go back there! Thanks Holland!

After this show we drove back home to sleep in our own beds for one last night before we left to Sweden because we had to play the Rock Herk festival in Belgium the day after.

Saturday 19th july 2008 – Rock Herk, Herk-de-Stad (Belgium)

Okay we got in bed at 03.30h last night and needed to arrive on Rock Herk at 11.00h so we didn't really have much sleep but who cares, we're on tour! Rock Herk is one of the bigger festivals in Belgium so we were really happy to play there. We got our stuff on the stage, did a nice long sound check and hung around for a bit on the festival ground. We were amazed by the amount of people who were already there when we had to get on stage. The show was awesome, one of the best we ever had and also the sound was amazing, thanks to Wacko!

After the show we went to the merchandise tent and it seemed that we really sold a lot which was really good, because touring costs a lot… After saying goodbye to some good friends of ours we went to eat in the backstage area (REALLY good food!!!) and then left Rock Herk at about 16.15h.

We couldn't stay at the festival because we had to be in Sweden in time the next day. We left towards Germany and after driving for 9 hours we stopped at a parking place in the north of Germany so we could sleep in our van for some hours (we have got a bed for 3 people and the other 3 just slept on the seats or on the floor of the van).

Sunday 20th july 2008 – Tullakrock, Ängelholm (Sweden)

We left the parking place at 10 o'clock and drove to the ferry to Denmark. After driving through Denmark for a while (nice country!) we took the ferry again but to Sweden this time, and we have to say the view on the ferry was really beautiful!

We had to play a local festival called Tullakrock that night and after arriving there we hung around for some time and got some food. We watched some bands, talked to some local people and after that it was almost time for us to get ready for the show. This was going to be our first show in Sweden so we really didn't know what to expect. We had to play the main stage as headlining band so that was pretty cool already. We played a really fun show here and the atmosphere was so nice. People really liked it so we could only be positive about this one!

We didn't get any news about a sleeping place fot that night until the guy who booked us came up to us and told us that he had arranged a hotel (!) for us. We really did need some extra sleep and a good bed so it was the best thing that could happen to us at that moment. The rooms had tv, internet,… so the Campus squad was happy.

From: www.concreteweb.be

Having given you a fairly decent overlook on this Belgian band's history only a couple of months ago (when I reviewed the fivesome's self-released Inside The Mind Of A Serial Killer mini-CD, posted 24/02) I think thàt is something we can dispense with here! A small detail needs correcting though: in the first place, seems like when the band signed to Funtime, the latter also agreed ..ing 'em to distribute/ promote the EP (or at least, that's what my editor-in-chief insisted on letting you know). Also, originally the album was to get an April street date, but that was postponed somewhat due to circumstances.

Recordings for the new album partly took place at the boys' home studio in February, and at Excess Studio with engineer Sander van Gelswijck (also responsable for recording the drums on the new Sparkle Of Hope album). Then, it was off to Dutch Split Second Sound, where the band co-produced the new material with Jochem Jacobs (of Textures fame, he both mixed and mastered the recordings) in early March (which means they were there at around the same time as the aforementioned SOH, allowing Rik and Tijs to do a guest vocal performance – see also SOH review).

There's a good 14 months between the recordings of their (demo) EP and the official debut, and the boys clearly grew in several aspects (songwriting, the will and increased technical ability to include more and more influences into their music) during that time. That, combined with Jacobs' excellent sound engineering, have made Campus' first full-length into a debut record of formidable format! Funtime concisively describes it as "An explosive collection of songs that show a grown up band using Emo/ Indie Rock and Metallic Hardcore as a solid foundation for their sound, but more importantly...a band that's not afraid of experimenting and using other influences to give the songs that extra kind of character and beauty".

Of course, that description only touches on the essence of Campus' music, and leaves out all the nice little details. Not that I'm into putting all those niceties in a row here, because it would take things too far, really. Let it simply be known that the band doés use calmer passages, which therefore emphasize the more energetic parts that much more efficiently. Among the additional influences I dó wanna stress on the Southern Metal intro bit of "At Enemy Lines", and the more atmospheric "instrumental" (the words, just those of the title, only come at the end) album title track is yet another beautidul passage on the album. But there's more, much more! In fact, the album is chuck-ful of instances where a detail (be it a freaky bit of lead guitar, a wonderfully brought harmonized backing vocal on top of the Screamo-styled leads) will have you sit up from your lazy chair...if indeed you can even remain seated quietly with this kind of hyper-kinetic music!

If you're a fan of melodic and inventive Screamo/ emotional Metalcore, you simply nééd to check this album out. For starters, surf to myspace.com/campusbe, where the band posted 2 songs off the new album (alongside two songs off the 2007 EP and an extra track off their first demo-EP This Time I Scream For More). When comparing the stuff, I'm sure you'll agree that, even if some elements were present from the beginning, the band's technical abilities have grown considerably. Just like me, you might even consider putting We Are The Silence in your year-lists...give the album enough listening sessions, and I'm sure you wíll!!!

From: www.festivalinfo.nl

From: OUT OF STEP MAGAZINE

Silence isn't the best way to describe this band; thunder and lightning would be better. 'We are the silence' doesn't offer 36 minutes of silence but straightforward hard rocking emo driven metalcore with the title track as an instrumental resting point in the middle. To some of you (me included) the words emo and metalcore gives you the goose bumps but to be honest this is classy shit although I sometimes loose interest. Campus is still a young band influenced by indierock, emo, hardcore and metal but I'm sure while growing up they will find their own sound. Up till now they are doing a good job, just keep expanding those boundaries.

From: DREUN.BE

Firstup is “Run,never come back”. You will never know, klinkt het in “Reason Before You Hide”, ik weethet anders wel, no reason to hide.
