here's a semi-scientific test to hear the differences between a Callaham stainless steel Stratocaster bridge and saddles and a DeTemple titatnium bridge and saddles. there are a number of things that will skew the sounds here, numers one and two of which are the nut and pickups on this guitar - the nut is old and the string slots are too wide so the open strings are dulled, and the pickups are Lollar Blackface strat pickups from 2007. These pickups are full bodied and not excessively bright to begin with (which i like). The guitar itself is July 1962, a laminated rosewood fretboard, not slab. I set up two mics side by side, in the recording they are panned hard left and right, an SM57 on the left and a Josephson C42 on the right. No EQ, near-matching levels (C42 is a little lower) straight into a Digidesign Mbox2Pro, 44.1khz x 16bit recording, transferred via LAME mp3 encoder to 192kbps mp3s. The amps are a 1972 Fender Princeton, Volume at 4, treble 4, bass 6, and a Mojotone 55 Deluxe clone, normal channel volume at 4 (tone at 6, don't think it affects the normal channel). I played some crappy guitar, chords and licks on the Callaham bridge, first through the Princeton, then moved the mics and then played through the Deluxe. Then i switched out the bridge, intonated a bit, (changed the strings!) played through the Deluxe, moved the mics back to the Drinceton and played a bit there. I made each mp3 start with the Princeton. this is the Callaham: here's the DeTemple: very interesting results. i would appreciate any comments. I would say the Callaham sounds initially brighter, but not necessarily better. The DeTemple definitely has more definition, which would seem to indicate that there would be more ability to use tonal control on the amps...

(my category is always music i guess...) so there's this band in washington. tacoma area... asked me to play on their record. i got a bunch of their protools sessions and i really liked the music so i played a ton of stuff... what's funny is that then some time goes by and all this stuff becomes a cd. i got a bunch in the mail yesterday. i suppose i will sell them on the magnetic site and here and elsewhere, or you can head to Trolleystop Records and find it. soon they will have some audio samples. i heartily recommend this record as much as any LSD mind control project! go get it.

well, first off i've been setting up more magnetic stuff on Last.fm, so go ahead and look for it there. Victor's old out of print cd "Bittersweet" is finally getting digitized so it should be in itunes and such in a month or so. also i have an artist page on ilike/facebook HERE for whatever that means. slowly sending copies of Honey out to radio, the local bay area college stations should have it now so go ahead and request it up on KFJC, KUSF, KALX... even KSPC, KCRW, KXLU in SoCal. soon WFMU too. I think KEXP in seattle got one too? i have no team doing tracking so it's basically sent and gone. hope somebody at the radio notices! If you work on Radio stations and want a copy for airplay, tell me. ------- in Myle's studio, recording 'Honey':

a woman came into the bookstore yesterday (i work at a bookstore) and asked for the Gary Webb book "Dark Alliance". remember the iran-contra scandal, the cia funding their arms dealing by manufacturing a crack cocaine epidemic in the US? i thought i heard people chanting "Amerika never forgets" after sept 11 2001, though strangely they had already forgotten so many American-made atrocities. well, the book Webb wrote in 1996, a 2nd edition in 1999 - can you find it? take a look. try to find a copy. (pause while you search the internets) ok are you done? well at least you can read this now-obscure samizdat document online at books.google.com or read the original articles at http://www.mega.nu:8080/ampp/webb.html so how many previously published pieces of politically incriminating literature are no longer published by the larger houses? well, soon after realizing that Dark Alliance was no longer available we looked for a more recent "Fleshing out the Skull and Bones Society" by Kris Millegan. go ahead, look on amazon... wow. original from 2004 even. so we know about skull and bones society, right, i don't have to refer you to Dave Emory's "For the Record" radio shows or anything? (www.spitfirelist.com) well, i found an independent publisher that is going to republish Millegan's book. http://www.trineday.com/index.html early next year. i am going to order some copies for the store of course, but also ask them to think about republishing Dark Alliance. wow. i was just refusing to believe that the USA was so... um... stalinist? but silently killing off books is just the worst...

it stands for "electronic press kit". i apparently got a few free months service on the sonicbids site, as part of the included stuff with a piece of protools hardware i bought last year, so i actually went and made it. http://www.sonicbids.com/jsegel Click Here to See Iti guess it's probably not so glamorous, and a little long winded. it seems like they expect you to submit this (for $10/per) to various promoters or festivals. whatever.

yes it's true, my new cd is done and available. We ran hard and fast at the end of the summer to get the songs mixed, Mr. Chris Xefos stayed up too late many nights to finish the mixes and Mr Michael Wertz designed and made screens to print cover, we actually got about half of them done before doing some shows in September and October, and Camper Van Beethoven's tour with Built to Spill. I'm finally getting around to printing the second half of the covers, which means i'll actually send out some promotional copies to a select few magazines and radio stations sometime this month. (if you have suggestions, please tell me...) i'm glad it's done, i'm very proud of the whole effort, on behalf of myself and everybody who worked on it. have a listen and tell everyone you know - i have to get rid of a few hundred CDS now!
