MILAN, Italy, July 16 (UPI) -- Rock icon Patti Smith was honored Monday by the Italian city of Milan for her work in the music industry, as well as her peace and human rights activism.
Dubbing Smith the "punk rock poet laureate," city officials presented the 60-year-old singer and painter with a plaque and a bouquet of white roses, the Italian news agency ANSA reported.
"I'm very happy to be in Milan, my favorite Italian city," remarked Smith, who wraps up her two-and-a-half-month European tour at the Milan Jamming Festival Monday night.
"Italian crowds have always shown great affection for me," Smith said, adding she was "really impressed" by the attendance at recent Italian anti-war protests.
The former factory worker and rock journalist is expected to spend a day off in the city Tuesday, taking in a performance of "La Traviata" at La Scala, before heading back to the United States for a brief tour.
In 2005, Rolling Stone magazine placed Smith 47th on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

dear friends of myspace i am on the road. today sitting in our venue while our tour bus gets repaired. i have a little time online so i wanted to write and say how much i appreciate all the support. it's really exciting to see how many of you are listening to the songs and poems i am posting. i also am really happy to read all the comments. reading your good wishes and reviews of our night's work. they mean more to me than what critics have to say. last night we played in gateshead and i had kind of a rough night. i did my best but it was a struggle but this morning reading your comments was encouraging. in the end the important thing is that we make a mutual experience out of the night and communicate. right now i'm sitting back stage. the crew is setting up and i'm about to make a peanut butter sandwich. organic peanut butter, wheat bread and black coffee is my typical backstage meal. well that's all for now. please keep sending your comments or suggestions. we're posting our nightly setlists on our website. let me know what you want to hear. i know i don't write back to anyone personally but i read everything. today is bob dylan's birthday. maybe give him a spin and good wishes... patti smith
