Dearest Mayflowers,

The Secret History is thrilled to be part of this years New York City Popfest on Saturday May 16th in support of The Radio Department, and alongside some other fine bands like Computer Perfection, Eux Autres and Pants Yell! at the glorious Bell House in Gowanus/Park Slope.

Having finished a little sojourn alongside our favorite punks The World Inferno, it will be nice to rendevouz with all le petit princes (and princesses) of pop...with the humble yet bold intention of politely suggesting that we

RIP IT UP AND START AGAIN.

Please join us, and them, in reinventing indie all over again...or at least getting good and soused trying.

Lovingly,
Michael Grace Jr.

Dearest April Showers,

Just a note to let you know that we will be supporting the infamous
World Inferno Friendship Society on two New England shows next week, in
addition to joining them Sunday May 19th at The Music Hall of
Williamsburg. If you know any folks in Northampton or Boston who might enjoy, pass the word...

If somehow you've managed to miss the decade of prose, poetry, punk and
provocation that is Jack Terricloth and The World Inferno, now is the
time to join on.  It's not for the faint of heart...it's a riotous
revival, with lots of flailing about. Goddamn it's brilliant.
www.worldinferno.com

As for us, after these three shows its back to finishing a
dour/sparkling would-be masterpiece of a full length. Basements and
faders beckon...

But first, 3 shows I'm looking forward to like none before...

Dearest Fallen Leaves,

It is with great excitement that we announce the long awaited release
of The Secret History's "Desolation Town" ep. This debut release is
brought to you by the notorious Le Grand Magistery record label, and
is available via iTunes, the impeccable Darla mail order service (www.darla.com
) and many other fine retailers. This event will be celebrated on
Thursday November 20th at our Modern Problems party at Public Assembly
in Williamsburg. The Secret History will be joined on this specially
curated evening by two of NYC best bands; our friends in the brilliant
Mahagony, and the remarkable Nouvellas. There will be fantastic djs,
lots of giveaways and general merriment. You really should be in
attendance.

The ep features the new single "It's Not The End of The World, Jonah,"
a 'lost generation' disco anthem, and the dour proto-glam hits "Mark &
John (Bring On The Glitter Kids,) "Our Lady of Pompeii," and "The
Ballad of The Haunted Hearts" remixed and remastered beyond all
previous previews. But the highlight may be the ballad "Our Lady of
Palermo," which has already made an old lady in the cheese shop cry.
The cover photo of Ms. Ronson snapped by Laura Kunkel is worth the
price of admission itself, but the ep also includes lyrics, and the
first 3 paragraphs of a Sicilian novella...

I am also thrilled to announce the launching of my new, ermm,
blog...also titled 'Desolation Town.' Because reading my thoughts on
life can only make you feel better about your own.

http://desolationtown.wordpress.com

So help us cut through the static of modern life, and let your friends
and associates (or a journalist) know about what we are up to. Without
you, we are nothing.

www.myspace.com/friendsofthesecrethistory

To all those My Favorite fans that have waited patiently for this to
take form, my deepest expression of gratitude. To all those that have
just begun with us, the same. With a new single in the works for
January, and a full length to follow in spring, we hope to finish the
decade out with a saga of songs on which to hold on to. The future is
an alternating current. We remain alone together, our hearts beating
fast under our anoraks and macs. But the rain has never troubled me a
fraction as much as the idea of saying goodbye.

Thoroughly,
Michael Grace Jr.

Dearest June Brides,

The Secret History are thrilled to take part in two tremulous shows this month, supporting two bands I adore.

THURSDAY JUNE 12TH, CAKESHOP L.E.S.
We have been added to the NYC Popfest in support of the riotous and much talked about Swedish ensemble known as Love Is All. The good news is that the popfest offers a rare (i.e. likely to never happen again) opportunity to see this band in this intimate a venue. The bad news is, for those of you who don't already possess full festival passes, no additional tickets will be sold. I expect some people to try to tunnel up from the sewers.

THURSDAY JUNE 19TH, SOUTHPAW PARK SLOPE
Only a week later, those of you who have let life and rain come between us recently can catch a special early evening performance at Southpaw. We have been asked to support the brilliant (and mostly obscure on this side of the pond) Rough Trade/Cherry Red recording artist Band of Holy Joy. We are playing at 8 o'clock-ish, and it's an 18 and over show. For those of you whom slavish employment and/or fear of vampires and/or parents prevents you from crawling around Williamsburg at 2am on a weeknight, you can see us in lovely Park Slope while the suns hangs low and amber in the sky.

The Band of Holy Joy is the sort of post-punk incarnation of brilliance that would be impossible now. Jacques Brel channeling Alan Sillitoe backed by fiddles, accordions and casios. They landed on the cover of the British music papers in the late 80s for their sprawling and desolate urban folktales, but never went the route of glossing the edges of their sound for Amerika (ala The Primitives or James). Songwriter Johny Brown has become one of my favorite lyricists, and their sound occurs somewhere between The Pogues and Dexy's Midnight Runners, or perhaps foreshadows cabaret and absinthe influenced artists like The World Inferno or Beirut. Take it from your friend Mr. Grace, you will be glad you witnessed the spectacle that is The Band of Holy Joy.

Oh did I mention we are playing too. We have new songs (one of which, 'Johnny Anorak,' caused spontaneous swooning at Mondo last month) and an increasing acute sense of purpose. With our upcoming debut release sure to create new electrical fields of meaning...you should join up now, while our empire of the heart is still ascending.

Cheers & Tears,
Mick Grace

Tickets are $10 in advance.

Children of The Endless Tomorrow,

The Secret History are proud to return to the stage for the Fourth Anniversary of The Mondo Dance party on Friday May 16th. Mondo is simply the best indie danceparty in NYC, and we have a few new tricks up our sleeve, special for the occasion.

So bring someone you love/lust/loathe out for a night of dancing...elegantly interrupted by 40 or so minutes of the post-heartbreak art rock we call "our music."

In other news, our recorded debut, a 5 song novella called "Desolation Town," is being held back until the proper college radio season in September, but on the brightside...we're already recording the full length to follow so once we take over the airwaves it shall be one long loving embrace...like two strangers at a soccer match.

So save the date, and join us in raising a stella artois to Mondo...and ummm for the gig.

Truly,
Michael Grace Jr.

Holy Heartbeats,

A friendly reminder that The Secret History are throwing a party this Thursday March 27th at the Galapagos art space in Williamsburg Brooklyn. In addition to a live performance by us, we will be joined by two rainy pop bands who I really like. The Isles (a New York band who have already made a splash in the UK) and The Exeter Popes.

We are excited to be returning to the stage after taking a bit of time to finish up our debut release, a 5 song e.p. which will be released on the Le Grand Magistery label later this Spring. We will playing a group of songs concerned with varied topics including Rosalia the Martyr of Palermo, Love and squalor in former Soviet Union, and record collecting in the basements of Haunted Houses. In addition, the first 20 or so punters will receive a free 4 piece "Jonah CMYK" badge set...all sepia and solemnity...a collaboration with our indispensible ally, designer Laura Kunkel, the singular force behind the stirring show posters that we staple gun over Camel ads.

The party will start around 9:30 with The Secret History performing at 11. Miss Modular and Kevington from the sublime Mondo dance party will be spinning between bands and after. The combination of song, spirits and architecture promises to reinforce the soulful pursuit of difference, which...along with soulful pursuit of quality blue jeans, has more or less defined our lives. Or said more simply...you could use a night out. Friday at the office is just a time-kill anyways...

So Come Round and write yourself onto a page or two.

xoxo

Dearest Dears,

It is with great pleasure that we announce that The Secret History has signed on with the Le Grand Magistery label to release their debut recording, a 5 song e.p. tentatively titled "Desolation Town." LGM is a label that we've been fans of for a long time, having brought artists as acclaimed and diverse as Momus, Stars, Baxendale and Pas/Cal to the ears of discerning, troubled pop fans everywhere.

http://www.magistery.com/

The e.p. will feature tracks previewed on-line in their early forms, plus the single (and much whispered about live favorite) "It's Not The End of World, Jonah," and an epic jangle-y ballad called "Palermo." We're hoping for a late Spring release for this lovingly designed first course. We're already knee deep into recording what's next, a full length featuring 11 more songs, a couple of them resurrected and reinvented from the last unreleased sessions of our previous pop group…so the next year will feature a Russian novels worth of sense remembered art rock, maudlin pop hits and seasick sailor's ballads. The Secret History in other words…

In other news, please mark your calendars as we return to the stage on Thursday March 27 at the famous Galapagos art space in Williamsburg Brooklyn. It is the debut of a traveling party we've created called "Modern Problems," and features performances by The Secret History, The Isles (a UK fave, and one of NYC best rainy pop bands) and The Exeter Popes, who also are quite stirring. In addition, our favorite DJs Miss Mondo and Kevington are on board for dancing or at least standing happily. The first 25 punters will also receive a limited edition "Jonah CMYK" 4 badge set featuring untitled film stills from the world that never was...they are quite lovely if I do say so myself. More details to come…

Speaking of djs…The Secret History will also be playing the triumphant 4th anniversary of the Mondo dance party at Don Hills in the West Village of Manhattan of Friday May 16th. It promises to be a blow out, a blast and anything else explosive which isn't also frightening.

Dearest Historians,

A reminder that this Friday evening is our end of the year art-pop bash at the atmospheric Williamsburg bar/venue Union Pool. We are excited to take the stage alongside two local bands whom I truly think are deeply fab. We will be re-invented the old, de-inventing the new, and basically doing what Uncle Steve told us to do some 15 years ago... singing our lives....

Before we disappear into the studio to finish a hearty e.p. (which we are very close to announcing some exciting details about,) come and join us for songs & spirits...raise a toast to another year which slipped away like the misty morn.

Dearest Historians,

The Secret History return to the stage next Friday October 19th for a CMJ week blow-out. This  special live performance at Don Hills will be part of the Mondo dance party, the best indie night in NYC. This is a chance to see TSH performing new songs about rueful vampires and the bones of Sicilian martyrs, and then manically dance to The Shout Out Louds, C86, Jens Lekman, The Smiths, and maybe even T Rex if I get in the booth! (that previous sentence's collision of morbidity and ecstatic-ness could only be contextualized in reference to us me thinks!)

Bring your girlfriends/boyfriends who like to dance to rarely heard and amazing indie music, but don't love sitting through hours and hours of dodgy garage bands first. After we build, and then set fire to an art rock haunted house, it will be nothing but flashing lights, sweat and spirits. This is the CMJ week event that Mope Rock Margaret, Anorak Allen, Glammy Gladys, and Paul Saint Pop should not miss. Am I losing my mind? Do I sound excited? That's because I am...

I see this Fall's disturbingly long bout of Indian Summer not so much as an environmental crisis, but rather as a mystic metaphor for our prolonged state of bliss and angst...regardless of age...and an invitation to keep caring, and singing and dancing...and yes brooding, if it doesn't interfere terribly with the prior.

We will also be debuting a new song on our myspace site this weekend called "Mark & John (bring on the glitter kids)" hoping to wet the appetite for next week's return to making clatter and shadows under bright lights, three and a half feet above the ground.

God save the runaways!
