Hello everyone,

If you are in Euroland or the UK & Ireland you have a great opportunity to see one of my favorite bands on their first European tour. Mahjonng is from my hometown of Chicago; they play polyrhythmic body music that challenges the mind while it moves your ass. They are amazing, dirty musicians with bad haircuts and brilliant imaginations. It's their first time over and they will reward your support with an amazing show! Tour dates below:

For all the people who have discovered me recently from the "Never Get Ahead" video currently posted on many blogs & You Tube, here's some facts you make be interested in:

1.  The video is from an unrehearsed live appearance on "Chic-a-go-go" in 1997 or 1998 (ten years ago, shit!).  Chic-a-go-go is a brilliant children's dance show on cable access here in Chicago; it's sort of like American Bandstand or Soul Train but for little kids.  Every week there is a random collection of kids and parents dancing to pre-recorded tracks and usually there is a special guest from the independant music scene.  The guest can be local or touring acts, ranging from totally obscure noise bands to bigger acts.  There is no budget and no rehearsal; they usually shoot two or three episodes in about two hours.  The host is a punk rock rat puppet named Ratso and his lovely partner, currently Miss Mia Park.

2.  I was asked to do a tune, and as the song was "Never Get Ahead" I re-cut the vocals to remove references to fellatio.  It is a kid's show, after all.  I recut the tune the night before and really didn't have time to rehearse the lip sync.  I figured my sync would be terrible, but didn't care too much about "fooling" people into thinking it was live.

3.  The original version of the tune is on my album "Bobby Conn" available through Atavistic/Truckstop Records.  I think it is on iTunes, Amazon, etc.  It's my first album; please buy a copy as I haven't seen any royalties from those people for a long time.  There is also a live version on my album "Live Classics, Vol. 1" released on Thrill Jockey Records.  It is considerably more rocking than the original which may or may not be an improvement.

4.  This video clip was voted "Worst Video Ever" in a VH1 contest and has been broadcast in the UK and Europe pretty consistently for the past ten years.

5.  The video was shot at 10 AM on a Saturday morning; I was not "coked out of my brain" as many people have suggested.  If my performance seems exaggerated, well, perhaps you need to enjoy life a bit more.

6.  Micheal Jackson & Motown are a huge inspiration for me, and I'm not embaressed to admit it.  I'm not really ashamed of much, really.

7.  The woman in the blue dress is my friend Emily; you can see clips of her playing bass in another tune on YouTube, "Passover".  The woman in the plaid skirt is Monica BouBou; you can see her in most of my videos as she has played violin with me for over ten years and is my partner in crime.  I can guarantee any dude that is interested in Emily or anyone else in the video that they are not interested a scumbag like you.  Everyone else in the video, all the kids, etc. are just random people who showed up that day.  Obviously, many of them were confused by my antics.

8.  I am "for real."  As in I am a real person.  Is my hair real in the video?  Is that a measure of my integrity?  These are all questions for you think about; but frankly, I am amazed at how much people seem to care about these things.  It's a sign of progress that we have the time to debate such issues over the internet.  I guess that means that the larger issues confronting humanity have been pretty much taken care of.  Hallelujah!

9.  I have noticed that Americans have a harder time with sarcasm & irony that other cultures.  We find sarcasm threatening in some way; I, on the other hand, find the emphasis on the illusion of integrity to be more frightening.  The lyrics to the song both celebrate and mock political songwriting.  The concept of "the man" is a juvenile simplification of oppression.  But the impulse behind it is still valid.

10.  Finally, thanks for watching!  I am very proud of this video, as it captures almost everything I love in entertainment.  It is FUNNY, even ten years later!

Hello everybody,

I have just returned to MySpaceLand after a long break from flashing advertisements and Macy's shopping spree opportunities. In the meantime, my dear friends The Cribs have asked us to support them on their UK tour that begins NEXT WEEK!!! Please check out the UK dates freshly posted on MySpace.

The band will be myself (naturally), Monica BouBou on violin, Josh Johannpeter on drums and our newest victim Ms. Becca Joynt on the bass. It promises to be a lean and mean lineup full of old & new tunes. Check it out and note that we are doing headline gigs in Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester & London as well. I hope to see you all!

As very special surprise we are debuting a new 7" single, "On The Farm / Don't Worry" for this tour! As the record is at the plant right now, I can guarantee that the first time anyone will see these will be at the shows. I will post audio on MySpace next week before I go as well as the cover art by Logan Bay. The tune is an ECO-DISCO bopper! You will like it.

See you next week,

Bobby Conn & Co.

Thanks to everyone who came out to our shows the past month.  It's great to meet so many fine humans and we all had a blast.  I must apologize to any "pending friends"; I do actually take the time to look at everyone's profile before accepting and I am far behind now.  If you are in a band, please understand that I also actually listen to your music (for a bit! more if I love it!) and that takes even more time so my apologies for that as well.  So don't take it personally if I don't friend you for a while (perhaps a few weeks?).

Here's a comment on each show:

Paris - surreal, totally jet lagged, got very drunk, very beautiful, wonderful start.  Rotterdam - DePlayer is awesome!  Peter & Annamijk are wonderful hosts, great stage set with German eagles and Joseph Beuys references (a favorite of mine), plus costumes and I got a giant fuzzy hat.  We played a very jazzy set with lots of improvisations. Met more nice people. R-Dam is sexy time. Karlsruhe - I would need a novel to capture this night.  After the gift of magical golden talismans for each of us things really took off.  Candie Hank rules even after his computer burst into flames.  Olly (Joe Johnson) is the best human in Germany right now.  I love Sisca!  Our show was insane, so sweaty, 250 + people all making out and fucking in the bushes afterwards.  Crazy DJ set afterwards.  Munster - seemed quiet after Karlsruhe, but a fun one.  I gave the audience all of our candy from backstage, but they kept asking us to play longer.  Berlin - we sounded like an army thanks to Frank, huge rock that night.  I got stupid and balanced on stools.  Went out into the weeeee hours with Candie Hankis & friends.  Koln - well played but hard to maintain the energy from the past few gigs.  I gave a very serious interview in a long empty hallway that made the mood a bit odd for me.  Everything was very shiny and chromed sounding.  Brussels - do the Belgians just not like me?  Stone faced audience and afterwards we couldn't find Candie Hank anywhere.  A little bit sad.  But a beautiful venue and park around it.

OK I will reprise the UK later!

Well, we are back in Chicago.  It is bitter cold.

London was warm (comparatively) and friendly; the Buffalo Bar was a pleasant blur after our more precise gig a Dingwall's.  Thanks to everyone who came out, and thanks for everyone who sprung for the advance copies of the record; let me know what you think.  If anyone has pix of that gig, we'd love to see them.  Dallas (bassist) was looking splendid in his Easter bunny suit.

One last word on the Donnie Davies site; it is all a joke after all.  I was a little worried that I would get blamed for it, especially since I get plenty of abuse from righteous critics for the stupid stuff I do make (see Pitchfork's abuse of "The Golden Age").  I didn't want to get nailed for something I didn't do.  I can humiliate myself just fine without anyone else's help, thank you.

Our next gig in London (so far) is at The Bush Hall, Shepard's Bush, London on April 25th.  Tickets will be available very soon and the place holds around 300 so there will be a better chance for those who missed us last week.  Also, we will be a five or six piece band including Monica on violin and play a longer and more, umm, musical set!  More UK and European dates to follow shortly!

Last night Josh and I watched "Liza with a Z", the 1972 live Liza Minelli television special.  I felt a kinship with her that transcends time, space, gender and talent.  If only Halston were alive today to design a white pantsuit for me!  How is it that he was able to accurately predict the look of unflattering women's office wear in the '80s way back in '72?  Where can I find more information on Spencer and Neil, Liza's mustachioed Marlboro men by way of the bathhouse dancers?  Where can creatures like that be found?

And as for Liza herself, she is truly fascinating.  Is she sexy or repulsive?  Is she pretty or hideous?  Is she a great performer or a maudlin ham?  There is no doubt that she can sing, and if she was 4" or 5" inches taller, she would be an amazing dancer.  (She is built like a Jawa, bless her).  There is also no doubt that she brings more energy and commitment to the stage than anyone except Sammy Davis Jr.  Mock her if you must, but respect her.  She's the real deal.  She does not, however, have one drop of  rock n' roll in her; it's all professional vaudeville energy.

Also, for anyone wondering about tickets for my gig on the 24th at Buffalo Bar try this link: Tickets £8 http://www.ticketweb.co.uk 08700 600 100
