More things about Galway you might not know.
The city of Galway in particular around the harbour area has a Spanish feel to it. The houses in this area are Spanish in their style, and off course one of the most famous landmarks in the city is
The Spanish Arch
An old stone arch which was built at the time of the Spanish Armada which eventually made its way to Killala in County Mayo
It is said that in those times Spain was Galway's main trading partner
And that this is how the style in the building around that area of the city was created.
The style of building was influenced by the tradesmen and sailors passing through on merchant ships.
Galway's Cathedral of St Nicholas is one of the largest medieval cathedrals in Ireland
It has a three gabled end to the west and it is known that Christopher Columbus the great explorer worshiped here in 1492 and he then sailed west to discover that the world was round and not flat, and to discover America.
In Galway you will also find Ireland's smallest museum.
There was a famous writer from Dublin known as James Joyce, I'm sure you've hear of him, well he came to Galway, and it is reported that he met a lady called Nora Barnacle and he fell in love with her, I don't know if they married but they certainly lived together for a long number of years.
He moved in to her house which is right near the St Nicholas's Cathedral
It was recently turned into a museum and contains facts, letters and artefacts of their life together
Its amazing how happenings and circumstances create or have created words that are now in the every day vocabulary
Lynch Law, or Lynching is one such word and it arose from an event that occurred in Galway in 1493.
In Market Street behind St Nicholas's Cathedral stands Lynches window
In 1493 James Lynch Fitz Stephen was compelled to execute his own son Walter on this very spot. Apparently Walters's sweetheart had been flirting beyond the accepted norm with a handsome Spaniard, who was staying as an honoured guest at the Mayors House.
Incensed by the Going's on Walter was forced to kill the Spaniard and the Mayor had no choice but to condemn his own son to death.
To make matters worse no one would step forward to carry out the execution, and the Mayor Lynch had no choice but to execute his own son
It is widely thought that this story gave rise to the term Lynch Law or Lynching.
They were really uncivilised back in those days, an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, eh!
