we pulled into san francisco and it was a city on the edge of something, some kind of mist that doesn't seem to leave. it erupts out of nowhere. then you're on the highway winding around these buildings tall up in the air. it's surreal and very large. we walked around the mission looking for the perfect burrito which we found. we went to the pirate store. we were pirates on a concrete sea and no one knew how to drive. san francisco was enthralling when we first arrived.

we went to a park to play a generator show and realized we'd left kathys backpack back at the house we were staying at. by the time we were close to the park it had been shut down by the cops so we went to a record store / venue / place with a bathroom /punkhouse called the thrill house where it was packed, all ripped up and friendly and destroyed.

these are some pictures of the house where we stayed (it was very lovely and clean and there were flashing marias everywhere)

this girl was from newyork, got locked out of her friends apartment when she went out for a smoke in the morning, was dressed like a 1970's disco queen, left everything inside and had class. so kathy gave her a cigarette and let her use her phone and we hung out and talked about how it was all going to be ok. later we saw her inside the place having a good time so that's awesome. she was very sweet.

alright then things got really crazy so that'll be part two, i'll post it up tomorrow.

the bikehouse is on a busy street with a yard and a porch and a crunchy gravel pathway to a very successful vegetable garden.

the people that live there are kind, have facial hair or don't have facial hair, are boys and girls and interesting.

we needed to stock up on groceries for the evening and the next couple of days so we decided to walk to ashlands food co-op. the second we left: freak rain storm. rivers down the roads and the gutters didn't know what to do with themselves and our pants were soaked, our hair was soaked, we were completely soaked all over. here's sean and kathy being soaked:

and then we dried off and ross cooked delicious food, like stirfy veggie stuffs and sean did dishes. the kids let us dry our clothes in their dryer and it was nice how warm they were right afterwards. ross almost forgot his socks.

the kids at the bikehouse threw an intimate house party. their house was very yellow and orange and red on the inside and the people there were old friends, and they had bottles of whiskey, cookies, a little boy, bicycles, toy pianos, etc. it was a very cute show. there were some very cute people.

the guy in the ramones t-shirt got me like an iced mate coconut drink thing that was amazing. i drank it so fast. and then we left.

redding was strange. i didn't write about it. i wrote in the car a bunch. and peter came which is wonderful. everyone should be lucky enough to have a friend like him.

i will never grow up i've decided, did you ever read the tin drum? i wish i brought a copy on this adventure. there are memorials and pastures and wire lines where you wouldn't think wire lines would go, sometimes the colors are shocking. we're all quiet now. the sun's out but it's not sunny. we talk about a man we just passed and say "he was a frog" , "it looked like he was thinking about smiling but it would have cracked his face", "it was like there was one of him but the one we saw grew out of that first one". when i said that i was thinking about those trees that grow fresh out of a big old stump.

winding service roads: trucks abandoned in patches, trucks next right, black rock out of gold wheat, this road has hardling anything and i see curling white smoke around the edges. for a moment a bird flew next to the car. we are 113 exits away. we've been driving forever and will be driving forever, this will be my perspective for awhile. will this seem small and distant and not real when i recall it in the end? i think danielle found a cat, she's telling ross on the phone. i wish my backseats could turn around so i could watch the road stretch away from us instead of absorb us in. hollow tree bits hacked up and stacked on the truck next to us where the bird was for a moment.

honkytonk tailgate party september 12th, let's all go! drown! stir! drown! let's all prevent forest fires! we just confirmed the nevada city show.
