**********Give a gift that keeps giving********** Greetings!
Making a donation on behalf of a loved one is a great gift that creates zero clutter, zero environmental impact. If we receive your online donation at www. onedconline. org before January 1st, we will call the person that you indicate to wish them Happy Kwanzaa! (Or on or before December 24th for "Merry Christmas" or on or before December 29th for "Happy Hanukkah. ")
Don't forget to e-mail Dominic at dmoulden@onedconline.org with your phone number(s) and we'd be delighted to tell your family, friends, and colleagues that they've just received a gift wrapped in economic and racial justice!
~~~~~~~~~~~
We know that many of you are struggling. The cost of transportation, groceries, insurance, and other necessities are going up...and your pay is probably not. You're likely troubled by the endless news of the current financial crisis and fretting about what it will mean for you and your family.
But there really is no financial crisis.
What I mean is that it's really business as usual. The current system is the financial crisis. ONE DC's mission is to exercise political strength to create and preserve racial and economic equity in Shaw and the District and we maintain that structural inequity--which the government bailout did not address--is the root of the problem here in the city and throughout the country. We engage residents in popular education workshops and activities to reflect on the structural causes of income equity, for example, because the financial crises and disinvestment in our communities have been too long ignored.
Please invest in economic justice.
It's the best "insurance policy" of all. With our ONE Right to Income, ONE Right to Land, and ONE Right to Housing organizing campaigns, we're fighting for guaranteed decent pay, housing, and public land that is for all to enjoy. Help us:
* Ensure that 650 residents are trained and hired for jobs created at the new Convention Center Headquarters Hotel.
* Guarantee that the city sticks by its promise to provide subsidy for the 94 affordable rental units at Parcel 42.
* Secure a legally binding community benefits agreement so that the 450 Barry Farm families displaced by redevelopment will be guaranteed the right of return.
* Ensure that 100 leaders complete ONE DC's leadership development and community organizing training programs annually.
* Commit 20 leaders (five per city quadrant) to facilitating trainings and campaign meetings in the community.
* Maintain legislative watch .. issues such as National Section 8 and affordable housing policy.
A "small" donation can make a BIG difference.
Obama's historic win is a testament to that fact. His campaign received large donations, sure, but it was the many small contributions (and organizing efforts!) from average citizens that were crucial to his victory. With ONE DC running even more grassroots campaigns, your help is extremely crucial for our victory--which really means victory and justice for the low-income residents of the nation's capital.
For example, a ONE DC member just donated $45 to us although she's a single mother with six children to support. Another member throws parties and socials to raise funds for ONE DC. Generosity like this says it all. It says: "Stay inspired and fired up!" It says: "Keep being rabble-rousers for radical change!" It says: "Each of us--no matter how poor, how disenfranchised--has the means to support people power!"
We really do mean "give what you can. "
Consider a contribution to ONE DC a tithe...and has the collection plate ever refused $1? Well, we won't either! If you can only spare the change in your pocket, we can use it to make change in the community on your behalf. And in the spirit of tithing (and convenience), you can go to our website, www. onedconline. org, and click on any of the two red donation buttons on the right hand side to set up recurring donations. An amount you choose can be automatically deducted from your account every month, every three months, or every year. You can also donate in the memory of a departed one on the website. Or just send a check to us at Dominic T. Moulden, ONE DC, PO Box 26049, Washington, DC 20001; it should be made payable to ONE DC. All contributions are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowable by law. If there anything we can do to make the donation process easier for you, please don't hesitate to give me a call at 202-232-2915.
Sincerely,
Dominic T. Moulden Executive Director
p.s. If you don't have the financial resources to give at this time, please donate your Internet surfing! If you go to the Yahoo!-powered GoodSearch. com and designate ONE DC as the organization you want to support (type "ONE DC" in the "Who Do You GoodSearch For?" box), we get a penny per search. No repeated manual clicks please--that could get us de-listed. Just search as you normally would and ONE DC will benefit.
p.s.s. And if you're in the book-buying mood, visit www. onedconline. org and click on the red IndieBound logo in the left column. You will be directed to a list of the closest IndieBound-associated bookstores. From there, you will be able to order the book(s) of your choice...and ONE DC will receive a percentage of the sales. Thank you for supporting local bookstores and ONE DC at the same time.
June 29 ~ Ice cream social and screening/discussion of Chocolate City, a film about gentrification in DC. Pay what you can and support ONE DC's organizing for an equitable city. Time and location TBA: call 202-232-2915 for details. July 11 ~ 7:00-10:30pm. Enjoy the talents of Christon "Christylez" Bacon and The Road (formerly the Pleasant Mountain Boys) and support equity in the District at the same time. Join us at the Potter's House, a smoke-free restaurant / bookstore / art gallery, at 1658 Columbia Rd NW. $20 suggested donation. Christon "Christylez" Bacon hails from Southeast DC. Although he is known mostly for his live musical performances, Christon studied as a technically-inclined visual artist, graduating from Duke Ellington School of the Arts and majoring in graphic design in college. Christon is also the subject of the multi-award winning documentary, Blue Line: Destination Christylez. As a musician, Christylez multi-tasks between various instruments such as the West African Djembe drum, acoustic guitar, and the syncopated oral percussions of the human beat-box, all while performing written material. As a performer, Christylez has been featured at many venues commonly unassocated with hip hop--including the National Cathedral, Kennedy Center, and the Mansion at Strathmore. In March 2008, Christylez became the first hip hop artist to receive an artist-in-residence position at Strathmore Hall. He quickly became the first artists to sell out both public performances during his month of residency. With versatility, clever songwriting, and pure talent, Christylez will continue to paint his dynamic perspective of hip hop into the minds of many. *** Formed in 2004, The Road is a roots-rock jam band of four DC/NoVA dads – John Leary on guitar and vocals, Chuck Caspari on lead guitar, Tom Phillips on bass and vocals, and Mark Sherman on drums and vocals – that pays tribute to the classics: The Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Wilson Pickett to name just a few, with some newer artists' work thrown in for good measure. The music ranges from languid and atmospheric to explosive. The members of The Road have been playing music for a combined total of about 100 years in venues ranging from East Coast clubs to festivals and fundraisers.
Community Organizing Training Institute ONE DC (formerly Manna CDC) is seeking talented individuals with a recognized commitment to organizing, policy change, and a social justice-based education process to submit applications for the Kressley Organizing Institute. The Institute is designed to support and train local organizers through an intensive 6-day training institute, and seeks to build the capacity of individuals and/or organizations working District-wide around resident-led campaign development and action planning. While the Institute is seeking individuals who have an interest in professional community organizing, we are especially interested in community leaders who are working at the grassroots level to build the collective power and leadership of their fellow community members.
There is no fee for the Institute, but spaces are limited. Application materials must be turned in by April 11, 2008, and they can by accessed online at www.onedconline.org. The Institute will run from June 8 - 13, 2008. For more information, contact Ericka Taylor at (202)232-2915 or Jennifer Muhammad at jmuhammad@onedconline.org.
