(i'll warn you now i'm going to get all treacly up in here... but today all bets are off, so shut it.)
i've listened to this song thousands of times over the past 8 years. when Laura wrote it, in 1968, thousands had already died fighting in Vietnam, MLK and Bobby Kennedy had both just been killed, the civil rights movement was reaching a fever pitch - and basically, the country was falling apart around her.
i can only imagine how frustrated she must have felt as an artist during this period. we think back to the 60s as a time when music really spoke to what was happening in the world, but it's also important to remember that when your job is to make music, or art, or write poetry - it can be very easy to get bogged down in the negativity of the world, and feel like you're not really doing anything of substance to make a difference. it's not easy to push yourself to keep trying to focus on what's possible rather than just complaining about what's already happened.
when we went to war in 2003, the lyrics took on a whole new meaning for me. suddenly i understood what it was like to have to TRY to continue loving your country, even when it seemed to be making all the wrong moves, and heading toward disaster. torture, domestic spying, denying climate change, watching people trapped on their rooftops during hurricane katrina, lies in every level of government, criminal acts in the financial system -- throughout all of this i listened closely and hoped that someday we would "Save the Country".
although it stands on its own as a beautiful song - even without the political and social context - through all of the frustration of the last 8 years, this song has been comforting to me. but up until now the comfort was bittersweet, because it was just a reminder that we were STILL dealing with the same issues she was singing about 40 years ago.
well, i know we are not even 24 hours into this new period in america, but i just have to post this video and the lyrics to this INSPIRED song one more time, because once again it's taken on a whole new meaning - only this time, it's hopeful! YAHOO AMERICA!
enjoy this beautiful day, and enjoy this beautiful song.
-The Brown Study
Come on, people! Come on, children!
Come on down to the glory river.
Gonna wash you up, and wash you down,
gonna lay the devil down, gonna lay that devil down.
Come on, people! Come on, children!
There's a king at the glory river.
And the precious king, he loved the people to sing;
Babes in the blinkin' sun sang
We Shall Overcome.
I got fury in my soul, fury's gonna take me to the glory goal.
In my mind I can't study war no more.
Save the people! Save the children! Save the country now!
Come on people! Sons and mothers!
Keep the dream of the two young brothers.
Gonna take that dream and ride that dove.
We could build the dream with love, I know,
We could build the dream with love, I know,
We could build a dream with love, children,
We could build the dream with love, oh people,
We could build the dream with love, I know,
We could build the dream with love.Save the people! Save the children! Save the country now!
I got fury in my soul, fury's gonna take me to the glory goal.
In my mind I can't study war no more.
