Current mood: grateful
There was this unfinished song a bunch of weeks ago, hanging in my head, had been there for a little while. I often get that with songs. Most of the time when I don't start one and finish it straight away it keeps lying in the Unfinished Songs Limbo forever.
Time elapsed, it was still there lurking somewhere, nagging me in the dark, but I had resigned to get accustomed to its concealed company until death do us part.
And then my lovely friend Heather came over, we had fun, played shows, shopped a bit, smiled a lot and walked in the sun.
One night we decided to watch "Imagine", a documentary about the life of John Lennon, over dinner. I was moved to tears, and even though I happen to cry over movies at a rather decent basis, being a lover of chick-flicks all zombie movies aside, words just couldn't describe the way I felt as the movie ended.
I've been a Beatles fan forever, and of course they're part of my very first important musical memories as a child, but beyond all the fondness I have for this, the movie really stroke a secret chord in me. I wish I could detail all the reasons why I loved it, tell you how simply and beautifully he loved Yoko despite all the shit people gave her, tell you how he never seemed to give up and smiled at that journalist wanker insulting him and his wife, tell you how you can feel he had an amazing spirit and a true open heart.
The end of the movie shows people gathering after hearing about his death. Lots were crying, obviously, but you can also get a sense of the amazing empathy in the air. Though they were all brought here by sad news you can almost feel love and hope oozing all about, simply captured on film, still shining twenty-nine years after. They were standing there, just trying to remember what his life was about, beyond the songs and supersmart wit and political engagement. Someone held a sign that read "REMEMBER LOVE".
I finished the song right after the movie ended, letting Heather and my beau sleep ahead as I was lying this overflow on paper. It's called "What Would John Lennon Do?".
Seeing the movie made me feel really vulnerable and useless for a while, saying to myself "what the fuck am I doing all of this for?". Heather too comforted me, telling me how art and music mattered like I had no idea.
She was damn right.
This song is anything but a reminder. A Post-It. I hope it helps people out there not to forget how to care, how to love, in spite of all the shit we have to go through, even though it's just a song after all. The world is a beautiful place but a tough one to live and survive in. I'm no stronger than you are, dear reader and listener.
I tried out the song live the other day, with my dearest friends Aurélien & Marie singing harmonies, and was amazed at how people responded to it. Someone made my day by shooting it and posting it up on Youtube (thanks Gregory! Whoo!).
I just thought I'd share.
☮♥
Marie.

Current mood: argumentative

Merci.

Hi all,
I'm not used to blogging much but I've posted twice this week, just coz I think it's worth it. My other post was a happy one about a blog that I really like, but this one deals with a more serious matter.
La Miroiterie, an artists' squat and venue located just a block away from my place in Ménilmontant street in Paris, has been threatened with closure by authorities.
It's a venue with cheap entrance fees AND a home for all sorts of artists, as most squats all over the world are.
The dwellers are likely to be kicked out anytime and no option to re-host them has been thought about (like they couldn't care less). It is to me both scandalous and ironic, as most parts of the block have been acquired by real estate enterprises.
So PLEASE, if you care, support them and sign the petition, it will only take two minutes of your time and it means a lot, unless you don't give a shit about the last places where art can express itself freely, without demanding sky-high entrance fees (as it is the often the case in Paris, I'm sad to say).
And to me it's not just about the price you'll pay for a show, it's about the freedom to chose alternate ways to live your life, whether in or out of the system. I don't want to live in a country where free thinkers are gagged and thrown in the gutter.
(Matt Landis, from World Inferno Friendship Society, chilling out backstage @ la Miroiterie on July 29th '08. I took this picture last summer.)
It's not even like I go there every week though they are neighbors, but I'm just sick to witness the emergence of an elitist, thoroughly-framed approach of culture in my country (OMG don't let these punks wander about, it scares away the neighbors!).
I'll repost a translation of the letter they sent the Mayor, as it speaks for itself.
----------
Miroiterie - 88 rue de Ménilmontant - Paris 20e /// Artists' squat and venue
To the Mayor of Paris:
Yesterday morning, policemen and a locksmith entered La Miroiterie (88 rue Menilmontant) by force, threatening the dwellers with eviction because the center has been bought by a real estate agent. It is the oldest squat in Paris, and has become a really important and well-loved place for music, exhibitions, dance performances, workshops, studios, and many other things that greatly enrich the diversity and culture of the 20th district of Paris. La Miroiterie is a unique place for artistic and social experiments. About 30 people live there, 12 painters/sculptors, 8 musicians, 10 residents, from various origins : France, England, Italy, Brasil, Marocco, Guatemala, Japan, Mexico... We just ask that this continues in the future.

Current mood: relaxed

Hey folks,
C. is a very old friend of mine. We lost contact for a while, life has its ups and downs, and found back the way to each other through Myspace recently. (thanks Tom <3)
The two of us have been always drowning and twisting in music no matter what, though our approach to music and experience haven't been quite the same really. We fiercely have that in common, above other things.
She's playing in a band now. She's been struggling long and hard to bring her own guts into sounds and now it's here.
I was debating with someone recently about how people like their friends' music systematically most of the time, blindly, without a shadow of criticism. That's not the way I try to think. When I dislike one of M.'s songs for instance, I tell her, and why. When she thinks one of my covers isn't worth it she tells me about it too.
Truth is, I don't feel obliged to blog about it.
Truth is, if I thought her band sucked I'd try to tell her why as nicely and honestly as I could.
... But I don't.
This is REAL SWEATY HEARTFELT ROCK N'ROLL.
They're INSANELY GOOD.
CHECK THEM OUT, SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL UNDERGROUND AND BUY THEIR FUCKING CD .
Love,
Marie.

Current mood: bouncy
So i've added this new bunch of amaaaazing pictures to my photo albums. I'm not really the photo type of person, I'm not really at ease before someone holding a camera, even though my boyfriend is a photographer, even though I get used to it as time goes by (Sin, Doug & FKN if you read this... <3), even though lots of people always take pictures mainly at Katzenjammer shows. I don't wanna put shitloads of pictures on my page because this is not why i'm here (I had to chose between 62 pictures while I'm at it, and it was really hard to pick only a few). I always feared I'd end up deleting this Myspace account as I did with the one I had a while ago, thinking I'd seldom meet people worth knowing better (umm is this even correct? Sorry messy syntax -please note the alliteration- :P), thinking oh well and whatnot. But then Sophie stumbled upon my page one day and we started sending each other sweet and clumsy emails, almost blushy, kinda like when you meet a guy you develop a crush on (and this time I'm not naming anyone eh tadadaaa). We decided to meet IRL and take pictures and I guess both of us were a bit nervous but I stayed at her place until it was really high time I left and it felt like we had only spent an hour hanging out. Encounters like these are the reason why I'm on Myspace again. I could also tell you about how this girl named Heather rocks my world and stripey socks but then I would probably have to blog every week or so (http://www.myspace.com/uniherukelele if you wanna see for yourself). I could tell you about Marie. And Emilie. About Deborah and Brodsky. About Anna and Corinna. About sweet Alohaaaloÿse. That's the part when you say to yourself you're gonna mouse around my top friends and pay a little visit to all these cool people because I get high and by with a little help from my friends. This blog is a stroke of shameless friend promotion and a huge thank you. Ch-ch-ch-chekka-check her out. http://www.myspace.com/prismes http://www.prismes.free.fr
