We're excited to announce that Cold Cave's new 12" "Etsel and Ruby" is now available to pre-order via Insound.

"Etsel and Ruby" is Cold Cave's first release on What's Your Rupture?. The 12" single features three new Cold Cave tracks including "Love Comes Close", "Concrete Crushes" and "Heaven Was Full". This is scuzzy, dissonant, retro-futurist pop at its best. Insightful and often hyperbolic lyrics about love, loss and brass knuckles compliment and expand our understanding of Cold Cave's aesthetic. Both make-out music for Reagan babies and meditations on the limits of lust, "Etsel and Ruby" is a complete musical statement.

Here's what Insound has to say:
Cold Cave songs are about freedom unaffected, indifferent, in love. Close in spirit to Erasure's A Little Respect, Middle Of the Road's Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep and Strawberry Switchblade's Since Yesterday. From Cold Cave's infancy sexual identity and oblique existentialism have been expressed through biting lyrics and electronic minimalism. Rarely has the human condition been exposed so brazenly as in "Sex Ads." Melodies, noise and rhythms clash as stories from below the surface are retold.

From the demo LP Coma Potion, which featured a rugged stripped down distortion, to the suggestive Electronic Dreams tour cassette. Cold Cave has developed its own brand of genre defying electronic music, without ever betraying its dark roots. Love and pornography, Industrial music and traditionalism, poetry and profanity all mix together in a hedonistic, cocktail of nihilistic nights and mournful mornings.

Nodzzz are back with two sweet summertime cruisin' jams, "True to Life" and "Good Times Crowd". "True to Life" finds Nodzzz in top jangly art-crit form. The B-side, "Good Times Crowd" is an ode to, well, the trials and tribulations of hanging with good times crowds. Some modern thoughts for these modern times. This is the first recording with new drummer Eric Butterworth and it's mom-friendly. What could be better?

Pre-orders will include a limited-edition "Live on New Year's Eve" cassette. Cassettes will ship immediately and have the following tracks:
Is She there?
We are the Only Animals
Controlled Karaoke
In the City(Contact High)
I have Bad News
Old Clothes
True to Life/Art School
Good Times Crowd

It's $6 plus shipping. Seriously, what could be better?

"Jethro Skull" is the debut EP from Texas party-rockers/mini-bike gang Silver Shampoo. The A-side consists of the title track "Jethro Skull" and "Contest". It's our estimation that many a silent night in neighborhoods across America will be interrupted by the drunken slurring of "Jeeettthhhhrrrooooooo Skkkkkkuuuulllll".

The B-side includes "Sonny Barger" and "Dogs". These are both subliminally sublime garage pop gems. "Sonny Barger" is a concise little masterpiece of bass slides, twinkling piano and "B-B-B-B-Barger" chants. "Dogs" is a sure favorite with pet lovers and simple math lovers alike. Get on your bike and RIDE!

Rating: 8.2

Comet Gain are one of the most underrated contemporary indie bands in the UK. Although in the 16 years since their inception they've never made major waves outside the DIY indie community (although those waves stretched far and wide-- the band is also well-loved in the U.S. and France), they have gained a fierce following of music lovers who seem to share their passion for Orange Juice, Anna Karina, old typewriters, George Orwell, Dexys Midnight Runners, and, above all else, vinyl. Like their riot-grrrl peers (guitarist Jon Slade was a founding member of Huggy Bear), this band doesn't distinguish art from life, and has stuck to its collective passion at all costs-- namely, relative obscurity. As the photograph on the cover of Broken Record Prayers states, in black marker scrawled on the back of a woman's hand, "Dreams Never End". This is Comet Gain's motto-- a dogma that has been declared throughout the years by vocalist/guitarist David Feck, and which they act on wholeheartedly.

It's been four years since the release of their fifth album, City Fallen Leaves, so Broken Record Prayers, a "collection of A- and B-sides, new songs, session tracks, and stray dogs recorded between 1998-2008" is a timely and carefully filtered introduction to their discography. Impressively, these disparate songs flow together with bright, energetic fluency-- a difficult task for an archival project such a this. "Young Lions", "Emotion Pictures", and "Tighten Up!" are taken from a 1997 Peel Session, while a couple of their best tracks, "You Can Hide Your Love Forever" and "Beautiful Despair", were once available on limited vinyl only. Perhaps the most powerful of these early singles is the opening track, "Jack Nance Hair", which was originally released on journalist Everett True's now defunct Mei Mei label. A semi-spoken declaration of purpose, Feck takes turns with fellow vocalist Rachel Evans to comment on the importance of "going home and listening to records with stained sleeves" and "getting back that fire and making your feelings known." Its message burns with urgency: "Believe in art/ Believe in yourself/ Contradict yourself."

All Comet Gain fans know what a special band they are, but this 20-song collection, lifted from half a dozen different releases, really brings home all their accomplishments over a lengthy and productive career. As sometime member Chris Appelgren (also of The PeeChees and The Pattern) astutely comments, the band is "messy, sweet, and tipsy." On Broken Record Prayers, there are echoes of Northern Soul ("Love Without Lies"), Felt ("Books of California"), and, of course, their obsession with Orange Juice leaks between every crack. They also bring their gawky magic to covers of Curtis Mayfield's "Hard Times" and Dena Barnes' "If You Ever Walk Out Of My Life", which is wrung with sorrowful lamentations that exquisitely fit the band's self-propelled image as romantic revolutionaries.

One hopes that this excellent compilation will help shine a light on Comet Gain's escapades. Whether it does or not, you can be sure that the group will continue on the path they've set for themselves, recording garage pop in their London apartment, fueled by red wine and stories of heartbreak and adventure. As Evans affirms: "Together we stand and feel stronger and braver for it/ Young, free and single/ Like the crack in the 45/ That makes the guitar snap all night/ And in the morning it starts all over again."

Current mood:fucked upish

Fucked Up's new 12" "Year of the Rat" is officially out today. Get excited!!

You can order it from What's Your Rupture? and Insound.

This is the third 12" in Fucked Up's record cycle based on the Chinese astrological cycle. The record is totally insane and incredible. Is "Year of the Rat" the hardcore song of the decade? Umm, yes.

"Year of the Pig", their second 12" in the cycle, is also available from What's Your Rupture?.

Here's the low down:
"Year of the Rat" was recorded at the culmination of 2008 and adheres to the principles of the Chinese sign. The 11 minute A-side ("Year of the Rat") memorializes this transformative year of political and cultural uncertainty with a cascade of guitars layering into a dense and propulsive charge reminiscent of the most memorable Hawkwind songs.

The B-side ("First Born") is not just a mediation on becoming a father - it's an uncompromising push towards a new sincerity. Don't doubt for a second that his position is heartfelt as Pink Eyes screams "this is the greatest moment of my life!"

The two songs on this 12" compile the exhaustive energy of one of the most outrageous years in world history.

Hey Guys

I am so excited to announce Comet Gain will return to the US to play three shows with Cold Cave on April 8th, 9th, and 12th.

Comet Gain have provided the soundtrack for my life ever since I heard their first Holloway Sweethearts in 1995. They have been the subject of so many drunken nights and through them I became friends with almost everyone I'm friends with now.   It was on a Comet Gain tour of the US where I met Girlfrendo, who later became Love is All, and even later asked Comet Gain's drummer Woodie to produce their LP Nine Times That Same Song.   And most recently Comet Gain has introduced me to the world of Cold Cave.

For years Comet Gain has been rattling the most obscurant of cages in the service of youth culture sympathy, a staccato stream of iconographic missives to "the kids" as they walk this Earth, cool to the touch and sometimes shaken up inside. If the group hasn't become a household name, it certainly hasn't vanished from sight, even throughout lineup changes, label jumping, and decidedly non-careerist behavior that would have felled thousands of bands in their position. Leader David Feck's positions on how to operate his endeavor run counter-clockwise to just about any other band on a timeline this extended; perhaps no greater evidence of his theories can be found than on Broken Record Prayers, featuring 20 songs culled from singles, compilations, Peel Sessions, and new material recorded between 1997 and 2007. If you've ever wondered what kind of band puts A-list material on a limited-to-500 single that's destined to sit under somebody's bed, wonder no more.

You can pre-order the new album Broken Record Prayers through me at http://whatsyourrupture.bigcartel.com or through insound.

And, check the front section for the dates and locations... and please don't miss your chance to see this band.

Kevin
