So, friends, here's the deal. (Show details at the bottom)
Next Wednesday, Measure is playing the biggest show we have ever played. The line up is Fountains of Wayne, Nada Surf (acoustic set), MEASURE, Spin Doctors lead singer Chris Barron, and a house band covering Kelly Buchanan songs, led by Josh Kaler of Slow Runner who produced Kelly's recent release. You are thinking, what?!
This past March, a friend of mine from Berklee, Kelly Buchanan, who Measure has played a number of shows with and who is one of the few singer/songwriters I know who was managing to support herself through music, took a very hard hit to the head by a hockey ball going about 50 mph, while playing street hockey with her amateur league.
The after effects of this injury have been devastating. There are so many things beyond our control, but there are two factors specifically that really resonated with me as something people could help with. 1) Kelly just spent a long time in the studio producing with Josh Kaler and others what I felt was a truly excellent album and her best work to date. Due to the injury, the album release was cancelled, the support tour was cancelled, and Kelly's album was going completely unheard and untouched. 2) Treatment for brain damage is expensive. Kelly could hardly walk down the stairs of her apartment building let alone make an attempt towards supporting herself financially.
I suggested that a group of Kelly's musician friends get together and put on a benefit show and that I organize it. Each of us would cover a KB song to get her new music out there; I though it would be a pretty low-key endeavor. However, Kelly is very connected within the NY music community, and as word spread about the benefit many people volunteered their time, talent, and resources to participate, including Kelly's great friend, a wonderful woman at ASCAP named Margaret, who is currently very pregnant, but who immediately got ASCAP involved in the event. The show became much bigger than I had anticipated, and I HAVE to take this moment to thank Annie Burns and Josh Kaler for being incredible and wonderful and talented and for stepping up to help out immensely with the organization and execution of this.
To be honest, the positive response we received from so many in the music community was pretty overwhelming, especially as nobody is getting paid anything for this show. I can not list the names of every person involved in this event, because it is too long, but I will say that from PR to Stage Management to poster design to engineers to musicians to industry advisers to a crew who will be producing a documentary of the entire show (which you will all be in if you attend), there is so much goodness and selflessness going into this production. It is amazing to witness.
Unfortunately, a few weeks ago, Kelly relapsed, taking a big step backwards on much of the progress she had made toward recovery. It is now uncertain if she'll even be able to attend the benefit, though I just spoke with her and she is determined not only to be there, but to say something to thank everyone.
This event has been a HUGE undertaking, and far exceeds in so many ways anything I have ever had a hand in putting together, but it will have a very important pay off. Not only will each of the artists performing, including Measure, be covering a song off KB's album to promote the release, not only are we raising money the she really needs to support her treatment and cost of living while she recovers, but as she told me, we are giving her hope and support. It is the type of thing that you wish people would do for you if circumstances put you in such a difficult position. Kelly is working extremely hard to rest and do the best things to move her healing process forward. When she does get through this, we want to make sure that she is not in mountains of debt, and that she is not at square one with the album that she poured her time and heart and energy into, before the accident.
So, this brings me to the point. Come to the show. Come support Kelly. Come see and hear some excellent music! Come support us in the biggest show we've ever played (cause it's scary). Come help all of the people who have donated time and resources and skill and music to this event make it a success!!!!!!
NOTE: If you visit www.kellybuchanan.com there is a press release with more information, as well as a letter that Kelly wrote to her hockey league documenting her injury (it took her months to write this because of the effort involved, and she had to do it with the computer monitor off). There is also A LINK TO TICKET SALES, and a link to donate via paypal if you are not able to attend but would still like to contribute to this cause.
So much love to you all! Thanks for reading my extra long novel of an blog. Really hope to see you there on the 10th.
xo Laura of Measure
