Steve Ferrone Clinic in our "Richie Room" | As you are drumming in the sun and catching the season's last great outdoor shows, those of us in the retail world are already planning for the holiday shopping season... as far away as that sounds! As we move toward the holidays, it gives a chance to review what a busy year it's been for us here at Rhythm Traders. Our legendary "Rhythm Traders Roadtrips" took us to the Meinl Cymbal factory in Germany, the Sabian cymbal factory in New Brunswick, Canada, to the Seattle World Rhythm Festival, to the NAMM show in Anaheim, and to Paris where we saw Mamady Keita perform and where we met with some of our European CD suppliers.
That alone is a lot for a year, at least for us. We also renovated a 5,500 sq/ft building for our new shop, just down the street from the "old shop", complete with new sections (microphones, electronic drums, parts wall, sound control, and snare section...just to name a few improvements). We have new displays, lower prices, and triple the inventory of our old location.
We also built 3 lesson studios, including our 700 sq/ft "Richie Goldstein Community Lesson Room" which has already played host to packed workshops. It wouldn't mean much without education, so we have hosted a lot of workshops over the year, including Alex Acuna, Steve Ferrone, Donny Osborne, Russ Miller, Tyrone Hendrix, Calixto Oviedo, Famoudou Konate, Bolokada Conde, Mike Snyder, Don Worth, Bobby Torres, & Luis Conte. Benny Greb is on his way. So is Luis Conte. Whew! Read on for the scoop on all this, and pictures. But before we do, we'd like to thank you for our best year ever thus far. Investment in music doesn't seem to be affected too badly by the slowing economy. Don't forget to sign up on our NEWSLIST , and join our Rhythm Traders FACEBOOK fan page so we can get you the latest news.

MEINL CYMBAL FACTORY TOUR Brad was invited by Meinl Cymbals to visit their factory in Gutenstetten, Germany in March. They have a state-of-the-art cymbal factory and distribution center. Brad experienced first-hand the attention to detail, quality control, and automation that goes into every Meinl cymbal. We were able to combine that with the rare opportunity to look at new Meinl percussion products that are in the development stages, a visit to some local music stores, and more than a couple visits to the local Bierstube to be sure Bavarian beer lives up to its reputation. It does. | Meinl's Cymbal Factory in Germany | Meinl's Showroom in Germany | Brad and other Drum Shop owners with Meinl's Crew | Brad gets some hands-on at Sabian's Factory |

BUT we do have a LIMITED QUANTITY of Sabian prototype cymbals that we had flown in...that are hand picked from their cymbal vaults. You will not find "sonicly" matched Sabian cymbals anywhere like what we have brought back to you. Supplies are very limited. (For a full version of this block with pictures of everything I’ve mentioned plus a tone of links, go to our site here: http://www.rhythmtraders.com/html/news.html )
Happy New Year Drummers! Lots of exciting news as we head into what will be the year of change for sure. I think we’re all glad that 2008 is behind us now. We have many new products, news and pictures from the 2009 Namm (National Association of Music Merchants) show in Anaheim, and the biggest news of all. We’re moving into a 5500 sq/ft building with 4 lesson studios, off street parking, and plenty of room for us to do our job better, and carry more drums (better than “more cowbell”, but we’ll have that too!). We expect to move around March 1st.
The Namm show was January 15-18, 2009 and was a blast as usual. We saw a lot of our favorite drummers, and so many cool drums in all shapes, sizes, and finishes that it was a bit overwhelming.
RT Drum Sets/Combo
Once we move we should have lots of new products and can stretch out a bit. I don’t want to spill the beans about all the lines we have coming you way, but it does include Ludwig drums, Meinl cymbals, and Brady snares. The hot new combo product this year is Pearl’s new Eliminator Demon Drive pedal, which has amazing bearings and we believe it to be the fastest pedal ever. Those will be hitting the ground in May l.
African Beat
Some great new products to tell you about. We have 2 new DVDs featuring former Percussions de Guinee lead soloist, Bolokada Conde. And for fans of Sabar, the best new sabar recording in years, by a young group from Dakar called Sing Sing Juniors will arrive in early February. Wait no more Mamady Keita has reissued his wonderful instructional series Rythmes Tradionells du Mandingue, originally released on VHS in Japan.Vol. 1, Debutants, is now on DVD with Vols. 2 and 3 to follow shortly. And finally, registration for this year’s 4 day djembe intensive with Famoudou Konate June 18-21 has BEGUN. It sells out every year, so please register early and come see us in sunny Portland.
Latin Quarter
We had a wonderful workshop with Luis Conte in December. Yes, even as 1 foot of snow piled up in Portland, Luis was burnin. We gave out $500 worth of prizes, with the support of Meinl and Zildjian. And we’re still friends even though Luis was stuck in a closed Portland airport on Dec. 21st trying to get home for Christmas. Yikes.
We ran into Luis Conte in Anaheim at the LP 45th Anniversary Gala, wearing ...A Rhythm Traders Tee. I also ran into an old buddy I met on my first trip to Cuba when he played congas for Chispa y los Complices, Yosvany Verdecia-Cortes. He lives in San Diego and is a sick conga and timbale player. You can find him on Myspace as Yosvanyrumbamania.
We have many, many new products coming your way. First, we have a limited amount of or 14” El Monstruo tumbas expected to arrive in March , along with some new products such as wood timbales, fiberglass shekeres, and some other surprises. We are still running an insane 45% off sale on discontinued Gon Bops congas.
And finally, get ready to Samba…. We have partnered with Meinl USA to bring in most of their Latin instruments to our new showroom. We will have their complete samba line, cajons, congas, bells, timbales, and small percussion. They are one of the most innovative companies, with great designs, and even better sound.
And finally, those of you in the Northwest are not going to want to miss the Seattle World Rhythm Festival April 24-26, 2009. For more info go here: http://www.swps.org.
And finally come see us at or Storefront at 424 NE Broadway in Portland during the month of February because we are having a crazy moving sale. Everything is 20-70% off and prices getting cheaper every week. We don’t want to move to the new location with anything, and that means savings for you!!
Thanks for visiting us, and stay in touch.
Keep on Drummin!!!

Hey dear friends, here's what's happening here in Portland at Rhythm Traders. I spent the weekend in Nashville visiting Meinl USA, Treeworks Chimes, and Fork's Drum Closet. If you're a drummer and haven't been to Fork's you're missing out. Gary's got a very cool thing happening there, and more snare drums than I've seen in my life. And now we're all back here in Portland gearing up for Christmas, the Namm show in January, and (drumroll please...) a big move. More on that later
Some quick things of interest: We're bringing Grammy Winning Percussionist Luis Conte for a workshop/gig (with Bobby Torres) on Dec. 20th. We hope you can make it, here's the info: http://www.rhythmtraders.com/html/classes.html
We're also running a big sale through christmas. Our Gon Bops congas at 55% off list have been selling well. Please stop by in person or check it out here: http://www.latinrhythmtraders.com/index.html
And we're happy to announce that we are expanding into a 5500 sq/ ft storefront, hopefully by February 2009. We will have 4 lesson studios, a huge showroom, parking and room to keep Rhythm Traders alive in these tough times.
I'll throw up some pics of new space so you guys can get as excited as we are. In January we're off to the Namm show in Anaheim to look for new products, hear some great music and see old friends. We'll upload some pics and news about all that soon. Come see us, ok? -bongoman
