After the WARRIORS 1 point loss in their debut game in the A-Reserve grade of the ABA it was time to prove their worth in the category and avoid relegation to the lower B-Grade. This would be a big ask as the next team to line up against the WARRIORS would be the finalists from last season, Colin Chuang's KINGS.

The KINGS have had solid leadership under the Chuang brother's and have developed strongly over the past few seasons. Their new signings, especially Luke Panton, the KINGS would be looking for an easy win against the new coming WARRIORS.

I was able to look in on the KINGS training session the Monday before their game against the WARRIORS and it looked as if they were solidifying their teamwork and melding together to become and unstoppable unit.

As game night slowly crept up on the two sides the showdown that would make or break the WARRIORS was almost at hand. Ever confident, the WARRIORS tall man Trent MCCROW had this to say;

"I'm really looking forward to this game. As most of you know I admired the skill and teamwork of the KINGS during the last season and I am fully pumped to have the opportunity with the WARRIORS to face off against them this season."

Shortly before the game it was revealed that Cameron Hooper would be playing in new skins and that his confidence in his team's ability to win was high. But all the smash talk would be settled on the court in what was to be an entertaining 40 minutes.

The game started with good position by the WARRIORS making a good 5 point lead on the KINGS. With a strong defense set in place the new comers to the competition were able to get an early lead. But as the KINGS found their rhythm they were able to bounce back from the minor setback and retake the lead. Both the KINGS and WARRIORS exchanged some sloppy turnovers during the first half but it was the KINGS who capitalized on their offensive plays and went into the half time break with an 8 point lead.

Going into the second half the WARRIORS would really need to step up their game, not only to prove they belong in A-Reserve but also to prove to themselves that they can win against the best in the completion. In the first half the WARRIORS conceded 10 team fouls with only one going to MCCROW. The WARRIORS wanted to be able to play a much cleaner second half then the first yet still play with the same intensity.

As the second half progressed the WARRIORS were able to keep with the KINGS and deny them from building their lead. But when the KINGS pulled to 14 ahead the WARRIORS called time out and needed to regroup. Some inspiring words from Captain Raul Moran fired the WARRIORS up and they hit the court with the confidence to claw their way back into the game, which they did! On their first offensive play after the time out Trent MCCROW made a massive jump shot over Luke Panton to bring his total for the night to 4. This was the start of what would be a great comeback by the WARRIORS.

Some sloppy ball control by the KINGS mixed with a lot of great possession and offensive presence on the boards by the WARRIORS was the ingredients used by the WARRIORS to bring the game to within 3 points. At this time captain Raul thought it wise to sit the tall man, Trent MCCROW, on the bench. With a little over seven minutes left in the game it looked like the WARRIORS would walk away from the game with heads held high and their first win under their belt, but that was not to be.

Two great offensive steals by Linden Chuang and Michal St Mart from some sloppy ball control by the WARRIORS guards were enough to pull the KINGS back into the dominant stance of the game. Keen to get back in on the action Trent MCCROW could do nothing but watch on as the WARRIORS stumbled in the last few minutes and eventually fell to the KINGS.

After the game we were able to catch up with some of the players from the WARRIORS and get their views on the game. Forward/Centre Josh King was not pleased with his performance on the night and knows that if he played better perhaps the final result would have been more in our favor. He simply stated;

"I played disgracefully!"

The KINGS Captain Colin Chuang had this to say about the game which the KINGS are dubbing as a meltdown that they were able to pull a win from;

"The game was scrappy with many costly turnovers and butter fingers leading to opposing baskets. But it is still early days in the season, and each player is playing their role well thus far."

In response tall center Trent MCCROW had this to say;

"I was disappointed in the amount of court time I saw tonight. I was clearly one of the best five [from the WARRIORS] on the night and I feel if I were able to contribute more we defiantly would have been in there with a chance. This is the second game in a row that I have had to sit on the side and watch as the game slips out of our grasps. It is tough not being out there with your brothers especially when you have the confidence and the energy to play. All I can do is keep improving my game so that our Captain can see the worth in giving me more game time."

The KINGS now move into the 3rd round of the ABA with 2 games under their belt while the WARRIORS are still searching for that elusive first win. With the WARRIORS meeting the BLADES next week this third game will prove crucial for the WARRIORS and will hopefully be the first positive step towards the A-Reserve ABA Title.

In other A-Reserve news one of Trent MCCROW's old rivals from B Grade last semester face off with his team against the fan-favorite PLAGUES. From all accounts Lucas Robinson led the STARS to an 8 point win providing the crowd with much entertainment. The PLAGUES, with mostly North American imports, will be disappointed with the result and will need to have a rethink about how they approach their next game against the FLOODS.

Keep an eye out for the ABA Blog Report from Wednesday Nights action that should be out sometime Thursday evening.

The last two nights have been absolutely wonderful for the ABA! There have been big opening games and big crowds too! I'm sure the ABA Staff are very pleased with the excitement and following he ABA is recieving by the students at Avondale and indeed the interest the ABA is producing in the local community too!

Over the past two nights I have witnessed some amazing games and I participated in another one. The ABA has started the season with a real bang and with your support the hype for this great competiton will continue throughout the season!

For this Blog I thought I would do something a littel bit different. Last Season I endevoured to provide you with information about the performance of my team (HAWKS) and especially my performance but this season I want to broaden my horizons and experiment with different things. But dont fear! I am not goign to stop producing the Blogs you know and Love, I will merely be alternating a few different styles. But as always the best way to hear about my performance is to watch my games LIVE and exclusive courtside!

What I'd like to do this week is highlight some of the players from the ABA and how they contributed to their teams efforts in the opening round for the season. So enjoy this little section and stay tuned for more blogs and ABA updates!

Hannah Orman - C Grade - Rivers
Although the RIVERS went down by a large margin in their opening game against the STORM I was impressed by the efforts of Hannah. The RIVERS looked untidy at best in their opening game but Hannah was able to shine during the game and was always involved. During the first half Hannah scored the RIVERS only 4 points and was their most valuable player in both offense and defense. I'm sure she is dissapointed with her teams performance on the night but she should walk away with a strong confidence in her own abilities as she consistantly showed her worth and tried to lift her team.

Ryan Vidot - C Grade - Wolves
Ryan's first excursion into the wonderful ABA competition tonight was marked with an excellent debut game for the WOLVES. The WOLVES are a new team to the ABA and have a strong mix of Theology students and other students attending Avondale College this semester. Ryan played enthusiastically both in offense and defense and was rewarded for his efforts by making importnat back to back baskets for his team. As both Ryan and the WOLVES progress through the season I can only see good things for the team with arguably the largest fan base in the entire ABA.

Well that is all I have for you all this edition but There will defiantle be more content coming your way!

Alright Biatches here it is!

The last two nights I have been playing some good old Halo 2 with some mates and last night we played a system link game in Waston Hall foyer. Beregher and I have been talking about linking our xbox's permanently so we cna play in our rooms and have the TV to ourself. Well today is the day!

We have discovered that we can system link on Collge network!

OMG how good is this?

All you need to do is open up one of the connections of your room and connect your XBOX and away we go!

So there will be some organized game sessions of any multiplayer game that us boys in watson have copies of but I'm pretty sure Halo will be a good start!

I look forward to fragging with you on the Avondale network! (Girls can do this too)

BTW for those of you waiting for my ABA blog it is coming... soon. I have class and two papers to write today so dont expect it in teh next few hours.

With the Second Season of our very own ABA starting tonight for 2007 I know this first round will prove crucial in discovering which teams have kept their form over the break and just exactly who is hot and who is not in the respective divisions. With most of the Rosters for the season locked in place Semester 2 2007 is shaping up to eclipse last season. This season A-Reserve Mens has blown out to a massive 10 team chase for the A-Reserve title. Last Seasons Champions, the Glory, will not only have to face off against the revenge filled Kings (Last seasons runner ups) but will also have to face the challenge of some of the newer clubs in the competition.

There have been a number of transfers and promotions so here is a short list of the teams to keep an eye on this season!

As for the Women's Divisions there have been a number of exciting rivilries that will carry over from last semester. But there are two main teams I urge you to keep an eye on this season. In Womens B Grade keep an eye on the Tigers. With some changes to their roster with Guard Carla Ansell in Cambodia for six months and tall Center Tiffany Black down at the Sydney campus they will miss the season so teh Tigers have got new signings to complete their roster. The tigers will pick up the start of this season wheer they finished of last time round. Unfortunately they fell short at the final hurdle during the finals but this semester with consistency they hop to make it one step closer to the B Grade Title.

In a shocking move the Whirlwinds have announced that they will be playing in teh lower C Grade this season. Star player Panton has been released to continue playing at the B Grade level so the Whirlwinds wish her all teh best in your endevour. With some experience at playing in B Grade the Whirlwinds will bring some valuable insight to the C Grade competition this season and will definatly be looking to dominate and capitolise form the lessons they learnt from the higher division. For more information about the Whirlwinds visit their website at: http://www.whirlwindsbasketball.org/

With just over 5 hours till the start of the nw ABA Season I know that I'l be mentally counting down the hours and minutes till my debut in A-Reserve (8:50 PM Court 3 from memory).

Support you ABA team this Season!

After talks with players from the YOUNG BUCKS yesterday and some positive feed back from some other players in the League, MCCOW has decided to sign up with eh new A-Reserve team.

"It has been my goal to progress through the ABA and I see my signing with the Young Bucks as a step in the right direction at this time."

The Young Bucks are a newly formed team and this will be their first assault on the A-Reserve Men's title in the ABA. The team has been pulled together from a number of sources with most players coming from the upper echelons of B-Grade. As a new team this season I'm sure they will have some high aspirations but won't be disappointed if they don't make it first out. However judging from the preliminary line-up it looks like a great semester ahead of the newest A-Reserve team.

"I'm one of only two 'white guys' on the team and I know they [the Young Bucks] will be looking to me for dominance under the ring. I plan to not only bring some height to the team but also a more traditional style of play which should work well within the team dynamics."

When asked what he thought on the move of the Stars (MCCROW's rivals last season) to the A-Reserve game, MCCROW had this to say:

"The Stars are a great team and I really enjoyed playing against them last season. I'm glad they are making the move up to A-Reserve because they were too dominant for the B-Grade competition. I look forward to playing them on the court and I hope that both the Stars and the Young Bucks can perform well this season!"

Today the tall man MCCROW who played for the Hawks in B-Grade last season was approached and invited to play in the A-Reserve Gade for the season.

He will be keeping his options open as he has not talked with his current team about their plans for the season. It is MCCROW's ultimate goal to progress to the top of the ABA but he is not willing to decide if this is the right time to move up a grade or not.

In other news MCCROW was also appraoched to form a new team to play in B-Grade but is yet to make a decison over his immediate future.

Whatever MCCROW decides he will continue to have abright future in the ABA!

Well here is the good part, the actual game! I just got back from the first part of my two hours of massage that I purchased at the COSMOS Slave Auction fundraiser! VIV you are so good and thanks heaps! I feel so much more relaxed already!

So 9PM comes around and our team is there and ready to start the game. We go through the gameplan for the night and we encourage each other to do our best and to most importnantly have fun!

Once again I was part of the starting five and took the Jump Ball. We won the ball and had the first opportunity to put points on the board. The Stars immediately went to a man on man defense and were able to keep us from scoring.

The first half saw a lot of our opportunitys go wasted and the Stars seemed to make the points each time they had the ball. In the last ten minutes of the first half we started to get on top of the Stars game. We were more effective on both offense and defence. We slowed their progress on the leaderboard and started to peg back the deficet with the help of bonus shots (Stars foul count used up). But at the half time break we were still down by 8 points.

During the half time break it was great to get a breather. We had been playing hard the entire first half and the Stars fitness and man on man play was wearing me out It was good to get some fluid back into my system. We talked about how in our last few games we had mad significant comebacks and that the game was still up to us to win or lose. I knew that we needed to keep playing the hard game we were especially in the second half and hopefully prove to the Stars that their man on man apporach was not working.

As we went into the second half the Stars were up close and personal. In my face and I was being heavily marked. I have never played man on man defense and I think the Stars exploited that fact and were able to use screens to their advantage. And Dean Goodchild was everpresent under our ring and beat my Forward so we couldn't box him out.

The Stars were making great use of their defense and on one occasion kept us in the back half causing a turn over. They continuelly kept the pressure up and this caused our Guards to rush bringing the ball into the forward half. Unfortunatley for us the guards also started rushing our offense and taking rash drives into the basket instead of making a sure pass to someone with a better opportunity.

Sadly for me this is how the second half progressed to the final siren. Late in the second our team fouls were maxed out and we were sending the Stars to the line after every infirngement. Luckily for us they didn't score too many points from the line as the final score was already embarrising. At teh final siren it was all over, even though we played our hardest till the end (even though it was not our smartest) we lost the final 16 to 40!

I thouroughly enjoyed the game however and I'm glad the Stars were able to put up such a good show for the crowd. I'm extremely happy with my performance as the Stars double teaming on me (at times) really showed how much a threat I was on court. I really appreciate the way the Stars played against us as it has opened my eyes to a weakness I need to correct and build on.

So the game was full of excitement. I had some big rebounds against two of the Stars players at once and although I only took one shot (which missed) in the game I was able to find open space more often then not. And as usual we came together with the other team and thanked them for a great game. And even though this was only our second loss the entire season somehow I find it to be the most rewarding game so far.

I've really enjoyed playing against you boys and it hads been a pleasure to play with my brothers on the Hawks! It has been great playing with you guys and being bale to better my game in such a  great team. All the best over the break and I hope we can go one step further next season!

Thanks to everyone who has been reading my Basketball blogs this year! I really appreciate the feedback I have been getting and dont forget to leave this last blog a comment!

Well I have already got some flack from a few of you guys who read my blogs that there was no buliten/blog yet. Well I hope this can rectify that problem. As most of you who are going to read this already know my Basketball team, the Hawks, lost the grand final to the Stars. I wasn't really emotionally stable (clear headed) to write a report on how the game played out last night and this is the first chance I have to write it up. Thanks are to Tim Leuenberger for helping me destress by playing quite a bit of Halo 2 last night. So without any further delay here it is. The tale of my defeat in the B-Grade Final:

It was a Sunday, not normally a day to play competative sports hee at Avondale, but it would be the day to decide the winners of the first ABA season in the ABA. After going to 2 parties (out of three invites) on the Saturday night and getting to bed quite late (watching the rugby with Andre Hamilton) I woke up at about 9AM to get ready for a shopping trip I had planned to go on with some friends and then spending most of the morning at Tuggz just wandering around, i finally got something to eat (2 zinger burgers from KFC).

After we got back to college around 2PM I went down to the Audo to see some of the ABA finals. To my surprise there was quite a crowd as the C-Grade Women kicked off the afternoon/evening of Finals. Hannah Orman was playing well and I was cheering for her the brief time I was there. (Just for you Hannah :P) There was some reorganization with teh time of my Game and it had been moved from 4PM that afternoon to 9PM that night and after half time I checked with the ABA Male President Chris Grice to make sure I ws there at the right time.

I then left to go to my room and prepare for a Nikki Rusterholz's 21st Birthday party (which I was able to go to becaue my game was moved back to 9pm.) So anyways got to the party and ate a lot of junk food and mucked around which was good for my relaxation and nerves.

I got back to college about 7PM after having a great time at the party and realised that I had done no preperation for the game and I had been filling my body with junk food all day!!! Not the best way to head into the biggest game of your career but it is what I had to work with!

I tried to get as much of my pregame routine out of the way as quick as possible; shower, music, stretches and the such. And I quickly went down to watch the Kings play Glory! Naturally I was going for the Kings and it was nice to see that the boys had brought along flags for the crowd and there were even some fans wearing Kings supporter T-Shirts (Where is mine guys?) I watched the first half and was cheering the Kings all the way!

At the half time I went to go warm up and take some shots and practice my lay-ups. When I got there some of my teammates were already there and to cut a long story short Sonny implemented a new style of offense for us to try out in the game. We practiced boxing out and a few other things.

Sorry Guys. I got carried away tonight. There was worship and then an Eels game. (handed it to the Tigers! YEAH) and anyways that is the end of Part One. I'll do the rest later tommorrow!

I've always been tall and when I was younger I was usually picked first at lunch time for our game of basketball. I wasn't all that good back in the day but at least I was able to be the first to the ball when somebody missed. Moving into upper primary and High school I wanted to improve my game and be able to be more than just the tall guy on court. I can remember in grade six I used to stay after school and play basketball with Amelia Botrell (who has been playing in Women's A-Grade this semester for the Arrows) and her younger brother and sister. It was good cause she was tall as well and was a great player (she still is) and I was able to develop a lot from there.

Moving into High school I can remember in my junior years I played on the school team and in yr 9 we got to the Metro Finals but lost by the smallest of margins. Unfortunately after that success Basketball became less popular at Northpine and the only real games we got to play was at Inter-School Team sports day against BAC, TVC and later Blue Hills. As year twelve loomed basketball took a back seat as all the guys wanted to play rugby and from what I'm told our School was the first Adventist school in Australia that had a rugby team so naturally all other sports took the back seat.

After I graduated from year twelve I couldn't really get my act together and decide what I was going to do with my life so I got a full time job and my beloved basketball slipped into the back of my mind and eventually became fond memories. I stopped following the NBA and I only casually followed the NBL with my support of the Brisbane Bullets. It wasn't until the beginning of this year when my sister started to get into the game and the Northpine upgraded their courts and put some emphasis back into the true Adventist sport, basketball, that I started to fool around a bit trying to teach my sister the basics and pass on some of my knowledge.

Anyways that was quite a long story so I'll get t the god stuff now. I came to college and I was so glad to be able to play regular organized sport once more so I signed up for everything, Basketball, Netball, Indoor Soccer and Touch Football (what happened there?). And I immediately immersed myself in the college sporting life and because of my passion for sport (and my newfound love MySpace) I was able to relate my love and interest in a new way.

Throughout this, my first season of ABA basketball, I have grown as a player and I have enjoyed watching some of the A-Grade players play and I have been trying to implement it into my game. Early on in the season I was able to play some one-on-one with Dave Parmenter (of the Kings through to the A-Reserve Final) and he taught me some simple and basic techniques that I had never thought of before.

Onto the season itself… Our team, the Hawks, went from strength to strength and progressed through the season vying for top spot on the ladder with the Stars as both teams entered round 5 with no losses to their name. In round five we faced the Blades and at the end of the night we lost by ten 30:20 and moved down to the number two spot on the ladder. Luckily for us our team resolve was not weakened and we moved forward with the intention not to lose another game. The next week we faced off against the Stars and it was one of our mentally toughest games of the season. We were able to come away with the win and steal the top spot on the ladder once more due to our mentality on the court and our dominance on defense.

After that game we were solidified as major contenders for the B-Grade Men's Title and we progressed through the rest of the season without dropping a game. This insured as a straight path through to the semifinals and a direct shot at a berth in the B-Grade Final!

Last week was state of Origen and we had a friendly game booked against the Stars but it was decided that we would not play the game and have the night off instead. I still went along and watched the both the Men's Playoff games. I witness the Fury down the Flames by 2 points in a tense game and also witnessed a 50:27 point beating by the Blades who progressed to face us in the semis. It was good to have the week off as I was able to work on my game and not worry about performing on the court. I was able to play a 3-on-3 game with some of my brothers and it really opened my eyes up to my value on offense and defense. Throughout the season I have mainly played a defensive role due to my lack of offensive confidence and I have been assisting my team instead of taking shots. But playing with these guys on the half court made me realize what a presence I can pose under the ring and I decided it was time to step up my game another notch and start making drives into the basket.

Coming into the game tonight I was nervous as hell. I was mentally preparing myself for the biggest game of my career and I was worried as hell that my new playing style wouldn't fit into the teams flow and would create more problems. We came together before the game and talked strategy. The Blades were the only blemish on our sheet and we knew we needed to come out hard and play a hard and mentally dominant game. We were not going to let our confidence drop and we were going to be a solid unit.

From the jump we played hard and both teams fought fiercely for the upper hand. I was able to drive in and score the first 2 points of the game which was a good indicator of things to come. (Although they were to be my only points of the night) Both teams were playing well and were having success at both ends of the court with the score bouncing in favor of one team to the next. In the first half I had two more ace opportunities to score points for the team but I was unable to make anything out of the opportunity. It shows that I am taking a step in the right direction but still have a way to go. Late in the 1st half our offensive endeavors became less successful and the Blades were able to pull a half time lead of 5 pts over us.

We knew we could take these guys down so we discussed how to go about it and we went into the second half with renewed confidence and a determination to bring the game back into our hands. For some reason the Blades didn't want that happening so they busted out some hardcore defense and for some reason we were playing fast and sloppy. With bad passes leading to turnovers and their fast breaks they started to build a healthy lead. It was during this period I hit the bench where I watched the rest of the game from. They continued to pull away from us and I was helpless to watch as they pulled ahead by 9 points.

A time out called with around 4 minutes left on the clock allowed us to regroup and build each other's confidence up. We needed badly to win as this was College versus the School and not only our team pride but the pride of Avondale College was on the line. With a hard 'man on manish' style of defense and some great steals and intercepts as well as big defensive rebounds we were able to get back in the game. To be honest most of what happened is already a blur and I am still stunned at my team's performance.

With two minutes to go on the clock we racked up our 8th team foul and sent them to the line. It didn't bother us as we continued our strong defense and after an awesome layup from Josh Campbell and drawing the foul gave us the opportunity to pull ahead by 3, Josh made his shot from the line and we took a 3 pt lead with just over 24 seconds left in the second half. The Blades responded hard and fast drawing a foul down their end but not making the shot. After missing both and Rocky Penese coming up with the rebound for us the game was there for us to lose in the final 18 seconds.

We were able to keep the ball and even make one more offense that lead to us making a 5 point lead. By this time Steve Scale and I were ecstatic as we knew we were through to the ABA B-Grade Final. Our brothers who we had been playing against were going off to and it was great to have the crowd on our side! And with only 3 seconds left there was nothing the Blades could do, they were defeated and the Hawks had succeeded in turning a 9pt deficit into a 5 pt win!

After the game we congratulated the Blades on giving us such a challenging game and an entertaining second half for all the onlookers. As usual we thanked them for the great game and wished them well in whatever they did. I'm glad we are always able to leave the court with a prayer of thanks to God as it really turns this game into something not just physical but t turns it into a great social experience too.

So with wins to both the Stars and the Hawks tonight it will be a blockbuster Final this Sunday in the audo!

Just a few words on the Stars game against the Fury. To be honest I wasn't paying 100% attention to the game as I was more focused on my preparation for my game but from what I saw here are some highlights I got from the Stars victory:

* Insane Ball skills by once again by Raul Morgan and a sneaky move that impressed the crowed as he held the ball in his knees and tricked the defender.

* Dean Goodchild's booming voice barking instructions and accolades to his team mates.

* Lucas Robinson's massive drives and blocks.

Sorry I couldn't really remember much of the game guys but I know I'm definitely looking forward to playing you guys in the Final. I hope you bring your best because I know we will be!
