I've always been tall and when I was younger I was usually picked first at lunch time for our game of basketball. I wasn't all that good back in the day but at least I was able to be the first to the ball when somebody missed. Moving into upper primary and High school I wanted to improve my game and be able to be more than just the tall guy on court. I can remember in grade six I used to stay after school and play basketball with Amelia Botrell (who has been playing in Women's A-Grade this semester for the Arrows) and her younger brother and sister. It was good cause she was tall as well and was a great player (she still is) and I was able to develop a lot from there.
Moving into High school I can remember in my junior years I played on the school team and in yr 9 we got to the Metro Finals but lost by the smallest of margins. Unfortunately after that success Basketball became less popular at Northpine and the only real games we got to play was at Inter-School Team sports day against BAC, TVC and later Blue Hills. As year twelve loomed basketball took a back seat as all the guys wanted to play rugby and from what I'm told our School was the first Adventist school in Australia that had a rugby team so naturally all other sports took the back seat.
After I graduated from year twelve I couldn't really get my act together and decide what I was going to do with my life so I got a full time job and my beloved basketball slipped into the back of my mind and eventually became fond memories. I stopped following the NBA and I only casually followed the NBL with my support of the Brisbane Bullets. It wasn't until the beginning of this year when my sister started to get into the game and the Northpine upgraded their courts and put some emphasis back into the true Adventist sport, basketball, that I started to fool around a bit trying to teach my sister the basics and pass on some of my knowledge.
Anyways that was quite a long story so I'll get t the god stuff now. I came to college and I was so glad to be able to play regular organized sport once more so I signed up for everything, Basketball, Netball, Indoor Soccer and Touch Football (what happened there?). And I immediately immersed myself in the college sporting life and because of my passion for sport (and my newfound love MySpace) I was able to relate my love and interest in a new way.
Throughout this, my first season of ABA basketball, I have grown as a player and I have enjoyed watching some of the A-Grade players play and I have been trying to implement it into my game. Early on in the season I was able to play some one-on-one with Dave Parmenter (of the Kings through to the A-Reserve Final) and he taught me some simple and basic techniques that I had never thought of before.
Onto the season itself… Our team, the Hawks, went from strength to strength and progressed through the season vying for top spot on the ladder with the Stars as both teams entered round 5 with no losses to their name. In round five we faced the Blades and at the end of the night we lost by ten 30:20 and moved down to the number two spot on the ladder. Luckily for us our team resolve was not weakened and we moved forward with the intention not to lose another game. The next week we faced off against the Stars and it was one of our mentally toughest games of the season. We were able to come away with the win and steal the top spot on the ladder once more due to our mentality on the court and our dominance on defense.
After that game we were solidified as major contenders for the B-Grade Men's Title and we progressed through the rest of the season without dropping a game. This insured as a straight path through to the semifinals and a direct shot at a berth in the B-Grade Final!
Last week was state of Origen and we had a friendly game booked against the Stars but it was decided that we would not play the game and have the night off instead. I still went along and watched the both the Men's Playoff games. I witness the Fury down the Flames by 2 points in a tense game and also witnessed a 50:27 point beating by the Blades who progressed to face us in the semis. It was good to have the week off as I was able to work on my game and not worry about performing on the court. I was able to play a 3-on-3 game with some of my brothers and it really opened my eyes up to my value on offense and defense. Throughout the season I have mainly played a defensive role due to my lack of offensive confidence and I have been assisting my team instead of taking shots. But playing with these guys on the half court made me realize what a presence I can pose under the ring and I decided it was time to step up my game another notch and start making drives into the basket.
Coming into the game tonight I was nervous as hell. I was mentally preparing myself for the biggest game of my career and I was worried as hell that my new playing style wouldn't fit into the teams flow and would create more problems. We came together before the game and talked strategy. The Blades were the only blemish on our sheet and we knew we needed to come out hard and play a hard and mentally dominant game. We were not going to let our confidence drop and we were going to be a solid unit.
From the jump we played hard and both teams fought fiercely for the upper hand. I was able to drive in and score the first 2 points of the game which was a good indicator of things to come. (Although they were to be my only points of the night) Both teams were playing well and were having success at both ends of the court with the score bouncing in favor of one team to the next. In the first half I had two more ace opportunities to score points for the team but I was unable to make anything out of the opportunity. It shows that I am taking a step in the right direction but still have a way to go. Late in the 1st half our offensive endeavors became less successful and the Blades were able to pull a half time lead of 5 pts over us.
We knew we could take these guys down so we discussed how to go about it and we went into the second half with renewed confidence and a determination to bring the game back into our hands. For some reason the Blades didn't want that happening so they busted out some hardcore defense and for some reason we were playing fast and sloppy. With bad passes leading to turnovers and their fast breaks they started to build a healthy lead. It was during this period I hit the bench where I watched the rest of the game from. They continued to pull away from us and I was helpless to watch as they pulled ahead by 9 points.
A time out called with around 4 minutes left on the clock allowed us to regroup and build each other's confidence up. We needed badly to win as this was College versus the School and not only our team pride but the pride of Avondale College was on the line. With a hard 'man on manish' style of defense and some great steals and intercepts as well as big defensive rebounds we were able to get back in the game. To be honest most of what happened is already a blur and I am still stunned at my team's performance.
With two minutes to go on the clock we racked up our 8th team foul and sent them to the line. It didn't bother us as we continued our strong defense and after an awesome layup from Josh Campbell and drawing the foul gave us the opportunity to pull ahead by 3, Josh made his shot from the line and we took a 3 pt lead with just over 24 seconds left in the second half. The Blades responded hard and fast drawing a foul down their end but not making the shot. After missing both and Rocky Penese coming up with the rebound for us the game was there for us to lose in the final 18 seconds.
We were able to keep the ball and even make one more offense that lead to us making a 5 point lead. By this time Steve Scale and I were ecstatic as we knew we were through to the ABA B-Grade Final. Our brothers who we had been playing against were going off to and it was great to have the crowd on our side! And with only 3 seconds left there was nothing the Blades could do, they were defeated and the Hawks had succeeded in turning a 9pt deficit into a 5 pt win!
After the game we congratulated the Blades on giving us such a challenging game and an entertaining second half for all the onlookers. As usual we thanked them for the great game and wished them well in whatever they did. I'm glad we are always able to leave the court with a prayer of thanks to God as it really turns this game into something not just physical but t turns it into a great social experience too.
So with wins to both the Stars and the Hawks tonight it will be a blockbuster Final this Sunday in the audo!
Just a few words on the Stars game against the Fury. To be honest I wasn't paying 100% attention to the game as I was more focused on my preparation for my game but from what I saw here are some highlights I got from the Stars victory:
* Insane Ball skills by once again by Raul Morgan and a sneaky move that impressed the crowed as he held the ball in his knees and tricked the defender.
* Dean Goodchild's booming voice barking instructions and accolades to his team mates.
* Lucas Robinson's massive drives and blocks.
Sorry I couldn't really remember much of the game guys but I know I'm definitely looking forward to playing you guys in the Final. I hope you bring your best because I know we will be!
Well 1800 words later I think it is time to stop writing and get some rest. For those who came and supported me and the hawks tonight thanks heaps. And to everyone else who is passionate about Basketball and the ABA I hope to see you all at the Grand Finals this weekend!
Oh and it wouldn't be a complete Hawks blog without a:
