Excerpts from STEP AHEAD’S reviews

There’s no doubt that Tommy is a fabulous guitar-player and fabulous musicians tend to write music for musicians. Music that the average listener finds quite boring but this is not the case with Tommy Ermolli’s ‘Step Ahead’. No, this is not all about shredding and how fast, insane and technical you can play. This is controlled music that provides interesting stuff for both the average listener but also for the trained musician.
‘Step Ahead’ is more rock than metal but that shouldn’t stop you from checking this CD out. Yes, this is instrumental rock with a bit of blues and jazz thrown in. But don’t worry... he’s not overdoing the jazz-thing.
‘Step Ahead’ is a pleasant surprise in my humble opinion. The guitar melody-lines are quite catchy and his solos are just pure pleasure. Mostly because he’s not overdoing them. This is controlled music as written above. (Power of Metal)

Fluid melodic playing is what it's all about on Step Ahead, for the Twinspirits and Khymera axeman takes a 'step away' from the neo-classical and full-on metal shredding to execute a more straight forward tuneful approach. Tommy Ermolli's delivery is smooth and intricate across the six strings. The melody is always at the forefront, and of course, you do have the shred factor present to spark up this collection of highly sophisticated songs. Step Ahead is a record that is focused, filled with gliding tunes that spark intriguing catchiness with the hook laden riffs and melodic entity that is fulfilled - nothing gets too chaotic nor too aggressive, yet the music retains the perfect amounts of heaviness & technical elements to make the record the powerhouse that it is. (Tommy Hash -www.ytsejam.com)

The essence of Ermolli’s musical effort is pure melodic rock guitar with hints to heavy metal, but don’t expect massive amounts of neo-classical shredding here. No, Ermolli’s style is more nuanced and is suggestive of a greater range of fret work. (Craig Hartranft -www.dangerdog.com 4.5 / 5.0)

Anyone who has listened to the albums by Twin Spirits knows what an outstanding guitar talent Ermolli really is and on this debut album 'Step Ahead', he really shines once again and is sure to be one of the guitar stars of the future ranking up there with his hero’s Vai and Satriani. This album isn’t a shred fest, it’s an album full of melody and various guitar stylings, from the blues to the prog, to the down right superb.
The album closes in impressive style with the hard rocking ‘Arrival’, which is just waiting for a vocal to be added to it.  This rounds off what is one of the best guitar albums I’ve heard in ages and redefines the genre for me and will for many. (The Mayfair Mall Zine)

Safe to say if you own any release Tommy has been involved with you will know this young man (21 I believe) has his own style. Focusing more on songs as opposed to flashy licks you get the feeling a number of these tracks like opener “Endless Space”, the title track and “Arrival” could fit nicely within a vocal context.  Tommy also shows great taste in where he layers his lead work, showcasing a number of styles this is arguably the most direct release Ermolli has been involved with, and also shows another string to his bow. On another level Tommy is carving his own sound and this will do his reputation no harm at all.
