Review: Fans like the old songs and still-sexy-cool Hynde
Friday, January 30, 2009
David Singer

ALBANY — Chrissie Hynde is the Pretenders. Regardless who has played in the band during the past 25-plus years, she has kept the sound consistently close to the punkish high-energy rock of the original foursome.

Thursday night at The Palace, Hynde’s lineup sounded as fresh and fierce as any lineup since their ’80s heyday, mixing it up with old and new throughout the set. Thursday night was the opening show of the tour.

Hits like “Talk of the Town” came early, followed by “Message of Love,” a quintessential Hynde song, highlighted by her yells “I love you I love you I love you …”

Wearing tight jeans tucked into high-heeled boots and a sleeveless vest, Hynde worked the stage, shook her hips, rang her guitar, and sang with the same sexy appeal she had 25 years ago. How sexy-cool will she be when she’s 70?

She played a few from her latest, “Break Up the Concrete,” like “Don’t Cut Your Hair,” not a great one, but she was still ultra cool through it. “Don’t Lose Faith In Me” is her newest effort at the ballad, which started off sweetly enough but inevitably rose, and rose, and forced too high.

“Back on the Chain Gang” put everyone on their feet, raising the energy of the filled house. Then came the great “Stop Your Sobbing,” which isn’t much different from an early Beatles tune. But Hynde gave it her new wave edge Thursday night, delivering it low-key and cool underneath the driving guitars and drums of original band member Martin Chambers.

Hynde took on her heartbreaking tone for “Don’t Get Me Wrong.” The band swung nicely between verses, led by guitarist James Walbourne.

“Brass in Pocket,” probably her most famous, and a tune familiar to people who don’t even know her name, might have registered the most with the crowd, though not necessarily with the band.

None of the newer tunes lit up the place. The group scored highest by far when covering old Pretender tunes. Old or new, the band — and particularly Hynde — got inside the songs as if for their first time. The advantage of being the first show on the tour is that the show is new, the group is still wringing out each song to find its right place and nothing yet feels stale or played. That’s exactly the kind of excitement we got Thursday night for pretty much every song.

American Bang opened the show, a young group of four long-haired guys from Nashville who liked rock ’n’ roll — the heavy, hard-hitting punkish head-rocking late ’70s kind, but definitely rock ’n’ roll.

They stomped and yelled to “We Are Wild and Young” and “Move with the Music,” both aggressive tunes with catchy hooks, that, if treated differently, would pass as pop tunes, much like a lot of Pretenders music would.

They told the crowd that they drove 36 hours through the snowstorm to get to the show, exclaiming their excitement to finally be on stage in Albany, their first show on the tour. Based on their onstage energy, I’d say they were telling the truth.

Greetings from Albany,N.y.!

So we set out Tuesday night around 7pm on what should have been a pretty easy 2 day 16 hour drive to Albany for our first show with The Pretenders @ The Palace Theatre Tonight.... Once we left Nashville and got about 2.5 hours into our drive though we realized that the snow and ice storm heading across the country was going to be worse than we expected.  We got stuck in an ice storm just north of Louisville where we got off the exit and went to get a hotel only to find out that all the hotels within 50 miles were booked for the night!  Soooooo, we pulled into the local Wal-Mart parking lot, turned on the heat and hung out all night.
We watched a movie, drank some whiskey to keep warm and slept from about 5:30 am to 7:30am , then we hit the road again at sunrise for 24 more hours of ice driving in the van.  We made our way up through Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania,  New Jersey and finally New York....  30 miles an hour almost the whole way, but at 7:30am we rolled into Albany safe and sound!

36 hours, a lot of ice and a couple sleepless nights in the van and we are ready to begin what still will be the best tour we've ever been on!

Here are the dates, we hope you can make it out to some shows along the way !
