I am posting this in response to an earlier thread so more people can see it.

Real black men are not niggas. Real black men are not slack. They are responsible. They take care of business. Real black men are not want-to-be thugs and players. They have been raised and have grown up. Real black men know how to treat a woman (and how to only have one woman). They know when to be strong and when to be sensitive to the needs of other people. They are not manipulative. They are not verbally or physically abusive. Family and community are also important to them. They set good examples for children. Real black men know GOD. Be blessed.

The following is from ColorOfChange.org:
We've got big news -- Glenn Beck's show is making less than half the money it was making when we started calling on companies to pull their advertisements from the show. This is huge and it's thanks to you -- more than 200,000 ColorOfChange members have spoken out, and 62 advertisers have listened.
Data from a media tracking firm shows how deeply we're hitting Fox's pockets; they are now sacrificing more than a half-million ad dollars a week to keep Beck on the air.
Of course, Beck and his supporters are fighting back with everything they've got. Today, we need your help to make sure the 62 companies who have pulled their ads from Beck's show stand strong, and to turn up the pressure on his remaining advertisers. Please join us in thanking the companies that have pulled their ads, and in calling on his remaining advertisers to stop supporting him:
During the last week in July, Beck's show pulled in over $1 million from advertising. The first week in September, that number was down to less than $500,000, even as his ratings have gone up.1
It's clear that our campaign is making a significant financial impact, despite Fox's insistence otherwise.
What's happening is a simple matter of supply and demand. Fox has a limited amount of time devoted to ads each day. If 62 companies refuse to run ads during Beck's show, the demand for that time is reduced, and the rates the network can charge for the show plummet. In Beck's case, almost no major companies are willing to advertise during either of his twice-a-day broadcasts, so Fox can't collect as much ad revenue as they could before. If we can keep the advertisers away, Fox will have to decide sometime soon whether it's worth losing money to keep Beck's poison on the air.
Beck's smear campaigns
Beck claims to be a patriot who asks hard questions and gives his viewers the facts. In reality, he consistently uses lies, distortions, and exaggerations to stir up anger and fear, and to distract his viewers from working towards real solutions to the problems facing our country. He seems determined to create an atmosphere in which the White House can accomplish nothing, and he's doing it partly by launching vicious smear campaigns on Obama'a character, policies and advisers.
Last week, Beck and his supporters took credit for both Van Jones' resignation2 and for the demotion of Yosi Sergant, who was "reassigned" at the National Endowment for the Arts following vicious attacks by Beck 3. And Beck has made it clear he's got other targets.4
Holding the line
Our campaign is working. Respectable companies don't want to be associated with Beck or support his show with their dollars. It's resulting in a major loss of funding for his show, and at the same time, it's making clear that Beck's race-baiting and fear-mongering are far outside the mainstream.
The longer Beck stays isolated, the more of a problem he'll be for Fox, and the harder it will be for him to spread his lies and distortions. If we can keep the pressure on, Fox will have to make a choice: 1) drop Beck because it doesn't make business sense to keep him; or 2) communicate to the world that they're so intent on providing a platform for race-baiting and fear-mongering that they don't care if they lose money (a serious problem for a public company like News Corporation, the owner of Fox).
More than ever, it's time to keep the pressure on. You can help by joining us in thanking the advertisers that have stopped supporting Glenn Beck, and calling on those whose ads are still running on his show to follow suit:
Thanks and Peace,
-- James, Gabriel, William, Dani and the rest of the ColorOfChange.org team

As you may know, right-wing talk show hosts have been bringing race-based fear mongering into the mainstream, but FOX's Glenn Beck has taken it to another level.
I signed ColorOfChange.org's petition to stop Glenn Beck's lies and distortions, and so far, 62 major companies have stopped their ads from running on his show. These companies have decided they don't want to be associated with Beck's race-baiting.
But Beck is only stepping up his fear-mongering, so we can't stop now. We have to make sure advertisers keep leaving, and stay away from his show.
Will you take a stand and be counted, and invite your friends and family to do the same? It takes just a moment:
This summer, Beck said:

This president has exposed himself as a guy over and over and over again who has a deep-seated hatred for white people... this guy is, I believe, a racist.
That statement fits into a pattern of rhetoric from Beck designed to stoke racial paranoia and fear. He has claimed that President Obama has a "reparation appetite" and a desire to use his policies to settle old racial scores. Beck's overall plan is to create an atmosphere in which the White House can accomplish nothing, and he's carrying it out by preying on race-based fears and mobilizing hate. Beck relies on dishonesty, distortion and exaggeration, and he is embarking on character assassinations of Obama administration officials with whom he disagrees.
FOX has a horrible track record on pushing racist propaganda, but Glenn Beck appears to be taking the network to an even lower standard. He's trying to divide and distract America when we should be coming together and talking about issues that really matter--like health care and the economy.
The good news is that we have the power to stop this. Over 200,000 people have joined this campaign, and 62 advertisers have already stopped their ads from being run during Beck's show. Please help keep the momentum building.
Thanks.

Dear friends,

CNN's Lou Dobbs has been using his show to give life to conspiracy
theories claiming President Obama wasn't born in the U.S. The
question was put to rest long ago, but Dobbs is pretending that this
extremist nonsense is a legitimate national conversation.

Dobbs, intentionally or not, is stoking the fires of racial fear and
paranoia in the same way that the McCain/Palin campaign did when they
cast Obama as "not one of us." Even after being called on it, he
refuses to stop.

CNN claims to be "the most trusted name in news," yet it is allowing
one of its hosts to give legitimacy to debunked, racist conspiracy
theories. Will you join me in calling on CNN to dump Dobbs -- and ask
your friends and family to do the same? It takes just a minute:

http://www.colorofchange.org/dobbs/..?id=1950-847456

For more than a year, folks on the far right have been claiming that
Obama is not a U.S. citizen, that he was born in Kenya, and that as a
result he can't be president. The theory has been repeatedly
debunked. Not only has the state of Hawaii produced a birth
certificate several times, there were also birth announcements in two
separate Hawaii papers when Obama was born, placing his birth in
Hawaii--for most reasonable people, that would remove any doubt.

Members of Dobbs' own staff have said they're uncomfortable with his
insistence on pursuing this story, but Dobbs insists on claiming
there must be something to it because "Obama refuses to produce the
long-form of his birth certificate." Other news outlets have refused
to give the idea any credence. The head of MSNBC, Phil Griffin, had
this to say about the cl.. "It's racist. It's racist. Just call it
for what it is."

Lou Dobbs has a history of attacking immigrants by spouting hateful
rhetoric and lies. He once claimed that "the invasion of illegal
aliens is threatening the health of many Americans" through "deadly
imports" of diseases like leprosy and malaria. This kind of
rhetoric feeds anti-immigrant hate, which has led to horrors like the
beating death of Luis Ramirez in Pennsylvania and the shooting death
of 9-year old Brisenia Flores in Arizona earlier this year. Dobb's
role in creating this environment has led organizations like the
Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) to call on CNN to reign in Dobbs in
the past.

Now Dobbs is going after Obama by giving voice to the same kind of
xenophobic rhetoric, stoking the deep-seated fears of angry right-wing
extremists who, as CNN analyst Roland Martin has said, can't accept
the fact that their president is Black.

Dobbs may not like Obama. But it's a real problem for him to use his
powerful position as a moderator of discussion about the news to
validate a dangerous falsehood that's rooted in racism.

Several watchdog groups have demanded action on the part of CNN. The
head of the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote CNN last week asking
that they fire Dobbs based on his recent actions. Media Matters and
others have launched efforts to hold CNN accountable as well.

CNN has the opportunity to live up to its description of itself as the
most trusted cable news network. Or it can start to look like FOX,
where the legitimizing of extremist propaganda is part of doing
business.

I've joined ColorOfChange.org in calling on Jon Klein, the president
of CNN, to take Dobbs off the air. Will you join us, and ask your
friends and family to do the same?

Dear friends,

As you may know, right-wing talk show hosts have been bringing race-based fear mongering into the mainstream, but FOX's Glenn Beck just took it to another level. On Tuesday, Beck said:
This president has exposed himself as a guy over and over and over again who has a deep-seated hatred for white people... this guy is, I believe, a racist.
It's part of a larger argument Beck has been making: that President Obama wants to serve the needs of Black communities at White people's expense. This kind of talk stirs up fear, hate, and it can lead to violence.

I've joined ColorOfChange.org's effort to stop Glenn Beck. ColorOfChange is already putting calls into Beck's advertisers, asking them if they want to be associated with this kind of racist hate and fear-mongering. When the advertisers see that tens of thousands of us are behind that question, I believe they'll move their advertising dollars elsewhere, and his show and platform will be history.
Will you take a stand and be counted, and invite your friends and family to do the same? It takes just a moment:

http://www.colorofchange.org/beck/?id=1950-847456

Glenn Beck is appealing to the worst in America. Of course, some Americans refuse to accept the fact that our president is Black or the idea that he could truly serve all Americans. But the only way these views fade away is if they're not reinforced by mainstream society. Instead, folks like Glenn Beck, Lou Dobbs, and Rush Limbaugh are exploiting racism and race-based fear to bump their ratings, stirring up racial discord in the process.

The dangers of these tactics are real. We saw the same dynamic during the presidential race: By the end, the McCain/Palin campaign was unable to control the violent energy whipped up by their race-baiting. It resulted in an unprecedented number of threats on Obama's life, a rise in the number of hate groups, and an increase in the number of threats and crimes against immigrants and Black people.
FOX has a horrible track record on pushing racist propaganda, but Glenn Beck appears to be taking the network to an even lower standard. He's trying to divide and distract America when we should be coming together and talking about issues that really matter--like health care and the economy.

The good news is that we have the power to stop this. All major media is funded by advertising. And advertisers care more than anything what consumers think. If we want to change what's happening and put an end to folks like Glenn Beck having a platform, we can do it.

It's up to us, and it can start now. Please join me:

Thanks.

Unfortunately, the profession of law enforcement attracts people who intend to abuse their "authority," including racists and "good old boys." Sure, I know good cops, but I have also experienced racial profiling several times.

Two months ago in West Columbia, I was falsely charged with speeding by a white cop. He was just trying to meet a quota, even if it meant being dishonest. He followed me long enough to make sure I was black before making me his victim. I went to court over the ticket, and I explained to the judge what happened. When given the chance to respond, the officer just dropped his head in shame and said he had no comment. Unfortunately, this particular judge demonstrated that he believes in protecting the officers at all costs. He couldn’t even look me in the face when he said “I find you guilty.” I am reluctant to weigh the different angles of a story involving racial profiling, especially considering my understanding of who really controls what we are allowed to see in the media.

Unfortunately, SOME black cops back up racist white cops (during or after an incident) because they are willing to do anything to fit in. Some have advanced in their careers for doing just that--selling out. I respect cops who are good men and women, but not these kinds of cowards—white or black.

Important issues involving injustice are frequently suppressed. I have said it a million times. More of us need to learn to “deconstruct” the media. Be blessed.

From ColorOfChange.org:
You and 39,000 other ColorOfChange.org members have fought back against six Republican governors who tried to block stimulus money from reaching their states' most vulnerable people -- children, the sick, and the unemployed. Your voice was part of a huge wave of public pressure that has caused some governors to back down or be overruled by other branches of government. We may not win this fight everywhere, but we've made some great progress:
In South Carolina teachers, students, and other concerned community members delivered your petition signatures to Governor Mark Sanford following a huge rally at the steps of South Carolina's state capitol. Gov. Sanford did everything in his power to reject $700 million in education spending for South Carolina's crumbling schools. But the fierce public opposition to Sanford -- which you contributed to -- led the legislature to overturn Sanford's veto of the funds. And when Sanford sued to block the funds, the South Carolina Supreme Court ordered him to spend the money on education.

In Louisiana, a coalition of state advocacy groups marched to the Capitol and delivered your signatures to Governor Bobby Jindal's office. The event was covered by local media and helped increase the pressure on Governor Jindal to accept stimulus funds. You can see video of the event here:

    http://www.colorofchange.org/govs/delivery/louisiana.html?id=1950-847456

And there was victory in Alaska -- you contributed to the public uproar that led to Governor Sarah Palin taking nearly all the stimulus funds allocated to her state, including money for unemployment insurance.

In Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Texas and South Carolina, local advocates are still pushing hard to get all of the stimulus funds their states are due -- especially funds for unemployment insurance as the economy continues to decline. We don't yet know how these fights will end, but your voice has played an important role in showing that people across the country are outraged by these Governors' reckless and political posturing. Moving forward, we'll keep you updated when there are strategic, effective ways to keep the pressure on these governors to do the right thing.
Thanks and Peace,

I never believed any of the negative media about MJ. He was too much of a childlike person himself. He had no real childhood. He had been taken advantage of many times in his lifetime, and I believe some people used their children to extort money out of him. This is well documented. He settled out of court because it was cheaper in the long run--not because he was guilty. MJ and his brothers opened doors for many other black people. He was reluctant about being an activist for his people, but he was a global humanitarian. We might be a little weird too if we had no privacy or couldn't go out in public without being scrutinized--positive or negative. MJ was not perfect, but his impact on the world is undeniable. I can't imagine my childhood without him.

Right now, the media is a circus. The timing has been awful and disrespectful to his grieving family, including unnecessary comments from a white politician. Much respect to Rev. Al Sharpton for debating Bill O'Reilly on the merit of MJ's status as an African American icon. Much of the media coverage has been biased and unbalanced. It is not fair. Let's draw a comparison. Nobody goes on and on about the fact that Elvis Presley was a drug addict. Although his music was derivative of black artists, Elvis has been celebrated as "the King." Yet, Michael Jackson has been dragged through the mud based on unproven accusations and criminal charges of which he was found not guilty. No matter what Mike looked like on the outside in recent years, he was a black man. Unfortunately, some white people simply cannot handle the fact that Michael Jackson has surpassed every entertainer, including Elvis. If Michael Jackson was white, the media coverage would be completely different. Let the man rest in peace.

Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, is arguably the greatest entertainer of all time. Treat his departure as if he was a member of your family or one of your friends. Pray for his. Mourn, pay tribute, or celebrate his impact on the world through music and thank GOD for it. RIP, MJ.

From ColorofChange.org:

Yesterday, nearly two years after more than 320,000 of you stood up to protect them from Jim Crow justice, the Jena 6--Jesse Ray Beard, Carwin Jones, Robert Bailey, Theo Shaw, Bryant Purvis and Mychal Bell--are all now free to move ahead with their lives. We should all be proud.
The five remaining Jena 6 cases were brought to conclusion on Friday1 when Jesse Ray, Carwin, Robert, Theo, and Bryant pleaded "no contest" to misdemeanor simple battery charges.2 They will spend no time in jail, serve seven days of probation, and pay relatively minor fines and court fees.
It's an incredible outcome given that the young men were originally charged with attempted murder in small-town Louisiana and had neither the funds nor the connections to get high-quality representation or attention for their cases.
Luckily for the Jena 6, hundreds of thousands of you got involved, and the power of your participation changed the game. An amazing team of lawyers worked tirelessly to achieve Friday's outcome. Our staff helped recruit them, and your financial contributions--over $275,000--provided the bulk of the funds for their work. Jim Boren, the coordinating attorney, said this about ColorOfChange members' contribution: "None of this would have happened without you."
But it wasn't just lawyers and money. Over 300,000 of you wrote to Governor Blanco and District Attorney Reed Walters. On September 20th, 2007, more than 10,000 of you went to Jena. Members who couldn't make it to Jena held more than 150 rallies and vigils across the country, and made more than 6,000 phone calls to elected officials in Louisiana. And a few weeks later, ColorOfChange members sent almost 4,000 complaints demanding an inquiry into the DA's actions.
Your actions offline and online helped put Jena on the map and resulted in critical coverage in every mainstream news outlet. You started a movement that made it impossible for Louisiana officials to support the status quo.
Today we offer congratulations to these young men and their families, and we say thank you to the entire ColorOfChange.org community. We're also so thankful to the attorneys who took these cases but chose to stay out of the limelight. They and several others3 are the unsung heroes of this story.
As the young men of the Jena 6 close this chapter of their lives, we wanted to give you an opportunity to wish them well. Click the link below to leave a personal statement for the young men of the Jena 6, or to listen to the voicemail from Jim Boren thanking the ColorOfChange community for our work:
While this is a great moment, it's important to remember that if it were not for the extreme nature of this case, most of us wouldn't have known about it or gotten involved. The reality is that there are countless Jena 6's: young people--often Black and male--who are overcharged or unduly criminalized, and whose plight is unknown to most of the outside world.
It's the reason our work cannot just be about identifying and fighting for individuals railroaded by the system, but about creating systemic change in criminal justice in America. We are truly grateful to have the chance to do this work with you, and we're hoping for your continued engagement and support.
Thanks and Peace,
-- James, Gabriel, William, Dani and the rest of the ColorOfChange.org team

The following is from ColorOfChange.org:

President Obama is trying to reform our broken health care system,
which has left more than 45 million Americans uninsured[1] and
millions more with insurance that won't provide the treatment they
need.[2]

Some in Congress are with Obama. But the insurance industry, with help
from Republicans[3] and so-called centrist Democrats,[4] is leading
the charge to kill a key part of his plan -- a government-run
insurance plan that would increase the number of Americans covered,
called the "public option." Industry groups are spending millions --
$35 million in lobbying costs alone[5] -- to convince people that they
won't be able to choose their doctor, that government will be making
their medical decisions, that they'd be forced to take the
government's plan, and that the plan is part of some socialist plot --
all lies. In reality, the insurance industry is trying to protect
its enormous profits on the backs of everyday people.

For Black folks, the stakes couldn't be higher: we are twice as
likely as Whites to be uninsured, we have more than double the rate of
infant mortality, we face more than twice the rate of diabetes-related
deaths than Whites -- and the list goes on.[6]

While the fight rages in Washington, our voices are simply not at the
table. That's why I've joined ColorOfChange.org in telling Congress
that every person in this country should have equal access to
affordable health care, regardless of race, income, or any other
factor. Will you join me? It only takes a moment:

http://www.colorofchange.org/health/..?id=1950-847456

Americans understand the idea of the public option and overwhelmingly
support it -- three out of four people want the federal government to
offer insurance coverage.[7,8] But powerful lobbying groups like
America's Health Insurance Plans, Pharmaceutical Researchers and
Manufacturers of America, and the American Medical Association --
representing the insurance industry, the drug industry, and doctors --
are doing everything in their power to maintain the status quo.[9]

Several organizations have pushed back, including MoveOn.org -- a
key partner of ours in this fight -- but it will take all of us
standing up if we want to win.

A public option makes sense for the country as a whole, and it makes
particularly good sense for Black folks. Many of us make too much to
qualify for Medicaid but either aren't eligible for or aren't
adequately covered by private, employer-based plans. Overall, 21% of
Blacks are uninsured, compared to 12% of Whites.[10]

We need a public insurance option, but that's not the only thing we
should be fighting for. We need to push for equity in all aspects of
our approach to health care. Every community deserves quality medical
treatment, research and resources. That's not what we're getting now,
and the numbers prove it:

- 22% of Black women say cost keeps them away from the doctor's
office, compared to 15% of White women [11]

- Black women have the highest rates of new AIDS cases, cancer
mortality, obesity and low-weight infants of any ethnic or racial
group [12]

- There are 13.6 Black infant deaths per 1,000 live births, compared
to 5.7 White infant deaths per 1,000 live births [13]

- There are 47 Black deaths from diabetes-related illness per 100,000
people, compared to 22.5 White deaths per 100,000 people [14]

- There are 60.1 new AIDS cases per 100,000 people among Blacks,
compared to 6.7 new cases per 100,000 people among Whites [15]

Our opportunity to address the disparities that keep too many of us
from enjoying long, healthy lives is now.

Please join me in telling our lawmakers that the first step toward
improving our health care system is including a public plan that makes
good health something everyone can afford:

http://www.colorofchange.org/health/..?id=1950-847456

Thanks.

This is the latest hate crime against "Latinos" documented by Presente.org:

Nine-year-old Brisenia Flores was sleeping soundly in her bed in Arivaca, Arizona when she was shot and killed in cold blood.

It was no random act of violence.1 Shawna Forde, the suspected mastermind of the home invasion robbery in which Brisenia and her father Raul were killed, leads the vigilante group Minutemen American Defense and has been tied to the national Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR).2 Both groups have been labeled as "hate groups" by the Southern Poverty Law Center and have a long record of dehumanizing immigrants and vilifying Latinos.

The problem is bigger than FAIR or any other group. Some members of Congress have been legitimizing these organizations for years—inviting them to testify as “experts”—while their rhetoric gives rise to violence against Latinos, like the killing of Brisenia and Raul Flores.3 That needs to end now.

Please join us in demanding that Congress renounce FAIR, the Minutemen, and all other anti-immigrant hate groups, and ask your friends and family to do the same:

FAIR and the Minutemen groups are regularly quoted in the mainstream media—FAIR more than 500 times in 2008—giving them a megaphone to broadcast their hateful rhetoric: like FAIR executive director Dan Stein’s claim that “illegal aliens are more prone to criminal activity than the rest of the population,” or Minutemen co-founder Jim Gilchrist’s assertion that it is “okay to say ‘rapist,’ ‘robber’ and ‘murderer’” when describing “illegal aliens.”4

As vile as their words are, even more disturbing is when our elected representatives applaud their efforts and parrot their messages. Take Ranking Republican Congressman on the House Immigration Sub-Committee, Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), a long-time friend of extremist groups, who wrote that a day without immigrants in America would mean “the lives of 12 U.S. citizens would be saved who otherwise die a violent death at the hands of murderous illegal aliens each day.” Those debunked claims were then repeated hundreds of times by FAIR and others, creating an echo chamber of racism and hate.5

Or take Senator Jeff Sessions (R-Alabama), the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, who has likened immigrants to terrorists and child molesters, and has taken money from a group with white-supremacist ties.6

Elected leaders like these, together with their allies in extremist anti-immigrant groups, create a climate of hatred that leads to violence – as evidenced by the recent string of hate-motivated killings across the country 7.

Enough is enough. Together, we can hold members of Congress accountable by demanding they stop legitimizing FAIR and the Minutemen. Please join us in doing so. It takes only a moment:
