Hey, this Thursday it's the Crowbar on the westcoast (of Florida) in Tampa.  Doors at 8, fire ensues 9 pm

Friday, April 24th we host the Dive Bar, start at 10 pm, play til we're physically shut off.  Tip you waitresses, cause there the best in all the land!  Special guest appearances?  Might be my balls, might be something a little more musical, although my balls can play a mean cello.

And of course, Jambando is Saturday starting at 5 pm.  We play at 11 pm, but you gotta come early for the funkUs and Eugene show!  Plus the there will be post jams of all shorts.  Come see what happens. I bet you'll be talking about the whole year, guaranteed..  We have early bird tickets left for jambando, so hook up with one of our band mates for a few.  They're $8 early, $10 bucks at the door.  Don't be a sheep!!

Shak Nasti?  Yes they are. Their music - a vibrating tapestry of jazz, reggae, pop
and funk woven with licks of blue-eyed soul and psychedelic rock.
Listening to the group instantly grants access to our long-term memory
banks where heart-felt recolections are stored of favorite artists such
as James Brown, Stevie Wonder, The Police, Stevie Winwood, Steely Dan and Geggy Tah
to name a few. Instilling such diversity of musical styles into their
process clearly reflects the three men’s great musical aptitude and
could never be mistaken as imitation by anyone who is musically aware.
No, what Shak Nasti offers is steeped with flavor uniquely their own
and has earned the group a large following up and down our lush
peninsula.

Tonight, Shak Nasti, who are Tim Turner, Matt Lapham (also in The Absinthe Trio) and Rion Smith (also in The Absinthe Trio as well as a percussionist for the Blue Man Group show at Universal), will be celebrating the release of their second full-length recording, A Way Inside, at the Enzian Theater in Maitland.
This event has generated a buzz of excitement and curiosity since the
venue is more popularly known for showcasing independent films rather
than independent music acts. What might not be well known is the fact
that the “pit” seating area was actually created for Phillip Glass and his orchestra when they used to play at the Enzian way back in the day. Yep. Took me by surprise as well.

Chris
Blanc, Director of Operations for Enzian, Eden Bar and the Florida Film
Festival says that tonight’s event is an experiment and is part of the
Enzian’s ongoing strategy to diversify offerings and appeal to the
tastes of a broader public.

“If all goes well, we can expect to see more of this type of thing at the theater on possibly a monthly basis,” Chris said.

Shak’s
CD “A Way Inside” is a danceable, singable, groovable collection of
thoughtfully crafted songs that produces instantly likeable hits for my
play list. Summer Sun, Sunsation and My Mia all appealed to the word
lover in me and I quickly found myself singing along to themes of sex,
love and sad endings after just a few listens. There are musical
surprises tucked into all the nooks and crannies of the tracks and
performances by guest musicians layered throughout the recording shoot
this release over the top.

This will not be a regular Shak
show by any means. Four well-known and beloved Orlando musicians will
be joining in the jam: Chris Charles on sax, Ito Colon on percussion,
Mike Ryan on guitar and Chris Davis on keyboards. And don’t count film
completely out of the equation at tonight’s show. Prior to the band and
also during their intermission, Orlando producer Dave Segal will premier “Bootleg on the Big Screen,” which is Dave’s ongoing art and culture documentary.

The
music of Shak Nasti challenges you to stay seated tonight so be sure to
wear your boogie shoes cause there will definitely be some dancing
going on.

1999: Rion moves to Orlando, and finds his first place to live,
affectionately named, "the Chicken Shak." This was in the South Bumby
area, and was a 1 acre lot owned by Barbara, an 80yr old half deaf lady
who had orange trees and many chickens. She lived in the main house,
and Rion, and later Yuki, after moving to the States, lived in the
little 'grandmother house'. It was a crappy little house with a floor
that was sinking, those old slatted windows that never quite closed,
and a hole in the wall under the sink where you could peek out and see
the chickens. The drain from the sink by the way went into the yard
where the chickens would get their water. Some highlights from the
Chicken Shak were
---Days when a racoon or something would kill a chicken, and
Barbara
come by in her little cart and just pick up the chicken carcass, put it
in her basked and drive off.
---The Invasion of the flying ants. After sporadically noticing
ants (the big kind where you can see the abdomen, thorax, all that)
that would crawl along the bedroom ceiling, one day I decided to do
something, and bought ant killer spray. I shot the spray into the
window sill where they seemed to be coming in. This is apparently
where the whole colony was living, so for the next 3 hours, I proceeded
to fight of a multitude of ants that were swarming in through the crack
in the sill. Thousands and thousands of ants plummeted to their death
till the colony was gone. That night I was awakened by something
crawling on me. It was the queen. She was the last one, and came out
to bid me farewell, I guess.
---Kid trying to steal Yuki's bike. We kept our bikes in a storage
shed way in the back of the lot, and didn't lock them, because the yard
was fenced in. We usually didn't have the front blinds open, but did
for some reason on this day. I thought I saw someone walk through our
yard, but just out of the corner of my eye. Could've been Barbara,
didn't think much of it. Then I saw a kid ride Yuki's bike towards the
front. Little punk. I darted out the door, and started yelling at
him. He dropped the bike and jumped over the fence. The funny part
was that he probably would have made it with the bike if only he'd
opened the fence for himself. The fence wasn't locked. Lucky for us
he wasn't a very bright theif.
---Dead rats in water filled trash cans. Florida. Rainy season.
The back of the Chicken Shak was not often visited by Yuki or myself.
So the trash cans that Barbara had left out back filled up with rain
water. Apparently a couple of rats got drowned in there, which as I
see isn't a totally bad thing, except for the stench. Yuki noticed the
stench from the kitchen, and had me go find out what it was. That was
thoroughly disgusting, and one of the worst smells ever. Not fun.
Dragging a muck filled trash can out to the back of the lot so I could
dump it and the dead rats was definitely good times, only to be topped
by the next experience.
---The invasion of the flies. During the winter, Yuki kept
thinking
she would hear a scratching or something from under the tub. I never
heard it, so I kept telling her, "it's an old house, it's probably just
the pipes creaking or something." After a while she didn't hear it
anymore, so I thought that was it. Then as the weather started to warm
up, Yuki was noticing a stench in the bathroom. I didn't smell it so I
thought it was coming from outside. Yuki thought it was a dead animal
or something. I checked outside, and smelled around, but couldn't
smell anything. Then all of a sudden there were a couple of flies in
the bathroom. Weird. Killed them. Next day, more flies. Killed
them. Must be coming in from outside. Shut the window. Still more
flies. What the...? OK, we'll seal off the entire bathroom, keep the
door closed, everything. Next day, the day Yuki and I have scheduled
to go to the court house to get our legally married (for the purpose of
speeding up her immigration paperwork, we were married legally before
we had our actual marriage ceremony), the morning started off normal:
Yuki drove me to work, and came to pick me up. She's in a panic.
"I've got to poop so bad" What? What happened? The bathroom was
invaded with flies. A LOT of flies. Yuki hadn't showered, hadn't
pooped. So we went home to a hot little house and I proceeded to barge
into our bathroom with a folded newspaper and just start swinging it
thru the air. There were so many flies, I was actually killing them by
just madly waving the newspaper thru the air! After about 10 minutes,
I had worked my self into a sweaty frenzy, but had killed all the
flies. Yuki got to poop, and we got to go get married- crazy. But
what caused the flies? Where were they coming from? After returning
home, and after killing more flies in the bathroom, we looked around.
Hmmm the smell's coming from the bathtub... I removed the drain cover
only to notice that the drain pipe wasn't really connected. The smell
was terrible- similar to the water-rat-buckets... Hey Yuki bring me a
flash light... wait, what's that I see down there.... oh shit....
it's a dead rat. Had been dead for quite some time. Called Barbara,
left a message about the dead rat- left a sign on the bathtub- "dead
rat down THERE!", then tried to leave before she got home, hoping that
she would take care of it, being the landlady and all. No such luck,
she called right back, and came right over. She wanted to stick a hose
in there, and just wash it out- No. Not a good idea. The rat
obviously couldn't get out himself, that's why he died in there. So
Barbara had one of those claw arm extender things that old people use
to pick things up... So yours truely had to use the claw to pull the
rat out of the drain hole. Big rat, little drain hole. First time, I
got a claw full of fur that pulled right off, and dropped the rat back
in. Gross. Next time, I got that damn rat dammit! He was probably a
good 10-12 inches long, not including the tail. That's what caused
the flies. The next day we were house hunting.
