The podcast of this week's bandcouver show and past shows from the last 2 months, available on the archive page at http://www.coopradio.org

Click in the date ( this week Nov. 12, 2009 )
and the hours between approx. 14:30 and 16:00
It keeps changing on the archive page...!14:40...14:45....don't know why.
Co-op's engineer doesn't either.

Before we get to the show this week, I have to mention how disappointed I am to learn that businesses and former businesses located on the southwest side of Main Street, burned to the ground this week.

It's such a waste.
It could have been an accident...or it could have been set on purpose.

Vancouver is tending to get too "condo happy" lately, and yet another ugly slab of these soulless, bland and non-communal blocks is down right depressing.

Contact your mayor to put to your ideas across that the Main street area needs to retain a community-friendly block instead of another slab of condos from a faceless corporation.

Now... this week's show had a visit from Nikola from the Reggae/Ska/Rock tinged group Capade.
Nikola's was a good enough guest and he comes across as a decent, genuine person.
Capade does  have solid musicians ,but, I find their music can ,unfortunately, be rather bland.

Just a little constructive advice.
I think they need to toughen up their music. Get a little dirt on it.
There should be a little less concern with being commercially-viable, and little more emphasis on creating a more unique slant with the music.
Perhaps, with time, this will surface in their music.

It's not terrible music. Just not terribly unique.
But, I thought we'd have him on the show, get some more new music on the air, and see what people think.
Let us know at bandcouver@yahoo.ca

I did find a few tunes I liked and aired:

Current mood:Questioning
Category: Music
I can't help but feel disgust at the ever-increasing dumbing down of music by the corporate moguls.
The 'Idol' shows are the biggest annoyance of all.
It makes the general public feel anybody has unlimited talent and can consider themselves an artist or even worse a future star.

The market gets flooded with a bunch of mediocre acts and the music striving to be more original, authentic and daring is being left behind.
There should be room for the later as well.

It can get to the point where people don't have any real appreciation of music.
It becomes more like collecting stamps than actually experiencing joy in something that could enrich your life. This appreciation is in short supply these days.
The power brokers of what's left of the big labels, radio, tv etc are the main cause of this.

This dissmissive additude towards music that strives to find its own voice downgrades music and makes actual musicians feel they are of much less value to society than say construction workers, doctors or record executives.

As Ringo Starr once said: "If radio and the music business was anything like it is now in the 60's, you would have never heard The Beatles."

There are some real music fans in Vancouver ,but, it's a small audience.
To me, a real music fan will appreciate a good local band as much as do an already famous one.
There should be no difference between the 2. Good music is good music whether it sells a million or a dozen.
A real music fan will start exploring when the big time music industry isn't producing the kind of music to  excite, challenge or ,at the very least, satisfy the listener's experience.

But it sure doesn't seem like many do just that in "Metro" Vancouver.
The so-called cosmopolitan, world class city.

The blandness of the suburbs and mall culture is matched with the blandness of mainstream music, movie and TV culture.

Vancouver, on a mass scale, seems to have to be told what to think is good,
and think only an act or artist who has become famous or gets signed or respected elsewhere is worth listening to.

The recent Canadian Country Music Awards ceremony is a prime example of back-slapping for following a blatant, bland formula.

What gets me is the fact that longtime, truly innovative acts likes Carolyn Mark, Neko Case, Bocephus King, Circus In Flames and many exciting acts in the local music scene, ( unfortunately relegated to Vancouver 'proper' for the most part ), are ignored as if they don't exist.

Where has any taste in music gone?
I see nothing to be proud of when Canadian acts follow a tired, blatant formula and are treated like they're geniuses, while acts making worthwhile, innovative music are shunned and/or ignored.

Vancouver and Canada need to grow up.
This is embarrassing. I'm not proud of same-sounding, assembly-line sludge.

I guess what we were taught in school by the better teachers about being our own person, questioning things we feel aren't right, and thinking for ourselves were values that aren't relevant in a crass, corporate world forever bent on making everything predictable and bland, and making mediocre acts famous, ignorant and arrogant.

Bandcouver doesn't share this same mindset.
That's why it's still relevant in getting deserving music out there.
Sure the 2 new stations ( The Peak and The Shore ) are better than the others ,but, there's still huge gaps when it comes to more independent music.

Especially the kind that doesn't fit into a neat little slot.
I try to understand the mainstream industry ,but, find the music so insulting and full of posers, I soon lose interest again.
Music shouldn't be placed in a straight-jacket, made to conform for a bunch of non-music fans who would be much better at being lawyers, real estate agents or shoe sellers then telling me what music I should listen to.

If they were truly music fans, there wouldn't be this bland sameness to the music heard by the mass audience.

Give music back to the music fans.
