Super Luckies @ 93 Feet East - 26th September 2009
Reviewer: Dave Thorpe
"Too many bands these days are predictable and repetitive. You hear one song and you can pretty much guess what the rest of the set is like. The Fratellis and the Kaiser Chiefs are two examples, but not so with the Super Luckies. One moment you feel you are in the middle of a Ska reunion, the next you are transported magically to a (trendy) lounge bar and before you know it you are you are on a Jamaican beach in the middle of a roots festival.
The set starts with the Latin influenced 'The Big Brown Bread’ that sounds like Ricky Martin had he spent the night with Jerry Dammers. The horns soar above Steve Payne’s voice and the rhythm section carries you along and before you know it you are tapping both feet and singing along.
Another highlight was the beautiful 'The Hours’, which brought the tempo down and really reminded me of some of the finer moments of Bens Folds Five. This could be some of the best song writing I have heard in a long time.
The set closes with the anarchic 'Taking the Michael’. This is the sort of music Just Jack should be making. A rhythm heavy funky 5 minutes of fun with a serious message to boot.
What really stands these guys out from the rest is the standard of musicianship. The band is incredibly tight which seems even more amazing when I am told that the horn section have never played with the full band until tonight!
So if you want to go on a musical holiday, go and see the Super Luckies. You will not be asking for a refund and they are far more exciting than going to Butlins."
