Since hearing local band The Ragamuffins on BBC radio, I was intrigued as to how they would perform as a live act. Their musical style is a variation between retro 80's electro and indie 'jangly' pop, with plenty of sweet harmonies to please the ears. A catchy combination I'm sure you'll agree - but a style which is sometimes heavily scrutinised by live music critics.
However, the band have backing from the likes of the BBC Lancashire presenter, John Gillmore, and after featuring heavily in the MTV Liverpool Music Week 2008, they've built up quite a rapport as a UK music act, supporting the likes of Reverend and The Makers and headlining venues including o2 academies.Therfore, witnessing a performance in such an intimate venue as Liverpool's Bar Sumui, was an opportunity not to be missed.

As I walked into the venue, it was apparent that the crowd was slightly less than was anticipated, obviously a major factor to one's performance. However, after talking to lead vocalist, David Jaggs, it was clear that this would not affect their performance: 'I just want to play now, I'm all excited.' Along with the fact that a gaggle of die-hard Ragamuffins fans had eagerly formulated at the front of the stage, ( They genuinely knew every single word...and had choreographed hand-jives- no word of a lie), I could tell that this was a gig full of surprises.
The infectious grooves and witty lyrics, which the band are renowned for, were displayed consistently and delivered in such a charismatic way, that it was ridiculously easy to forget the lack of audience. The band certainly had the crowd wrapped around their little techno-tastic fingers, with the cleverly named 'She Spells Kirsti (with an STI)'- a song which you can't help but sing (and clap) along to. In contrast to this, 'Breathe Easy, Blue skies' depicted a solemn northern-soul influence, portraying a certain versatility.
The 'Rags'- as they are colloquially known, ended their set with crowd-pleaser 'Disco Biscuits' ensuring dancing ( from all members of the audience and not just choreographed hand-jives!) and a well-rounded performance.

As a live act, The Ragamuffins do not disappoint, if I'm totally honest they are actually better live. Even with a major set-back of a weak turn-out, they weren't fazed and carried on regardless, which is definitely a rarity within the live-music scene. Some may argue that their musical style is too commercial and indifferent from other indie-pop acts at present, however I think that 'The Rags' are exactly what British music needs right now- a genuine band with genuine goals ( the band members are pretty genuine too.)

The Ragamuffins are next in Liverpool 23/1/2010 @ THE ZANZIBAR- don't miss it!

The Ragamuffins Newsletter Year Zero:

Well well well, at LAST I get around to writing another one of these. It’s been a few months hasn’t it? We can only apologise for the delay, so yeah, erm, “sorry”, but, if you haven’t had a chance to keep up to date with developments on Facebook (there’s a new site on there by the way) or Myspace (we’ve pretty much completely redone it!) or by being at one of our gigs, then read on….

NEW RECORDS!

We’ve just spent the last two weeks in the studio both up North and down South with our good friends Dave Cottrell and Jason from excellent London band “The Teasers”.  We’ve also got a few songs that we’ve done/had done over the summer that we’re going to be making available too.  We have recorded……

Better Late Than Never

Discobiscuits  (at LAST full quality version!!)

Hold Steady (as you’ve never heard it before, erm, unless you were at our BBC gig!)

Miracles Away

This will be soon followed by….

She Spells Kirsti (With An STI)

Whatever Happened To The Common Decency Of Lying (as you’ve never heard it before)

Breathe Easy, Blue Skies

And…..

Go Ballistic!

Batteries Not Included (remix/remastered)

So yeah, keep a beady eye out for it, probably mid November when they’ll be knocking about!!

NEW MERCHANDISE!

If you weren’t aware already, we’ve started making “The Ragamuffins” T-Shirts and Badges, and they’ve been knocking around for about 2 months now. Here’s a sample image of one of the T-Shirts and one of the badge outlines. They come in a variety of colours (Irish Green, Blue, Yellow, Black, Sky Blue, Lemon Yellow…. If you request it we can do it!) and we totally design them to specific demands because we don’t want to be lumbered with any XL Pink shirts which wouldn’t sell for instance!

So if you do fancy buying a little piece of Ragamuffin regalia, give us a shout with your measurements and so on and we’ll get some stuff sent to you.

At the minute, there’s Teacup Pictures and “Make Tea, Not Love” or “Make Tea, Not Coffee” or Rocket pictures and “Go Ballistic!” text. Get in.

T Shirts £12 each (plus £2 P&P)

Badges £1 each

Seem fair?

NEW GIGS!

Bit tricky to do this, we’re in the middle of booking quite the collection of gigs for November and December at the minute but most of them aren’t fully confirmed date wise yet. So, without further ado, please feel free to check out our revamped sites for more frequently updated details.

NEW PEOPLE!

We’d like to say a big hello to Brent who’ll be joining us on the ole shrubbery of rhythym, as well as a big thank you to Richard who’d been playing drums with us since our inception a wee while ago, but who has decided to move onto pastures greener. Onwards and upwards as they say! We’d also like to thank everyone who’s stood in for us over the past few months when things haven’t gone to plan!

Libby, Johnny, Kelsey (you don’t need a “y” at the end of your name to help us out, but it helps!), cheers for everything!

NEWS!

So yeah, in assorted news, we’d like to congratulate The Ragamuffins Football Team in avoiding relegation in our first season in the top flight (even if it was on a technicality!) and er, erm, that’s about it for now! It’ll all come flooding back the second I press send, I’m sure of it.

Take care now, keep in touch and we’ll see you soon!!!

The Ragamuffins Newsletter Issue 7!....

Hello
everyone and a very Happy New Year from everyone at The Ragamuffins. We were
waiting for some more extensive news, more gigs and that before spinning a new
Newsletter onto the presses, so without further ado, here we go!....

.. ..

Kelsey!....

Some of
you may notice that the girl stood behind the keyboards has changed her hair
colour and grown a few feet! Fear not, our wonderful Jules Gilchrist has not
permanently disappeared off the face of the earth, nor has she started taking
growth hormone to finally be able to peer over the top of her MicroKorg, but
has gone over to the Far East for a few months for work related thingies.
Dutifully, her erm, duties, on keyboards are being taken over by the very
lovely Kelsey Lindstrom, a resident of Portland in Oregon (in the US of A!) and
our first gig with Kelsey will be at Styles’ Bar in Ormskirk on the 18th
of February, where we are going to be debuting some new songs (oh yesss!). For
more information, read on!!....

.. ..

Gigs!....

As
promised we have a selection of now confirmed gigs for you to pencil into your
diaries.....

 ....

February
18th – Styles Bar, Ormskirk, Merseyside....

.. ..

April 3rd,
Real Ale “Middle Earth” Beer Festival, Hurst Green Memorial Hall, Hurst Green,
Lancashire....

April 4th,
Bumper, Hardman Street, Liverpool, Merseyside....

.. ..

May 20th
– 26th, International Pop Overthrow Festival, The Cavern, Liverpool,
Merseyside....

.. ..

More
will be following, including a very special one off, ticketed gig for a Radio
Lancashire “Intimate Evening” which will be broadcast worldwide on the BBC
(online like!). Details of how to apply for tickets will be sent out shortly
when we confirm the dates, and if you want any details for ANY of these gigs
don’t hesitate to send an email to
info@theragamuffins.co.uk and we’ll be right back in touch!!....

.. ..

Radio!....

Thank
you very very much everyone who voted for us on XFM in December. It means a lot
that you supported us and took the time to log on and vote. The band who won
(who I’m not actually going to name and give them publicity because I’m a
terrible loser as Paul will testify from both playing for the same football
team!) cheated a bit but ultimately, once the judges got wind of this and reset
the votes they won fair and square. Pfft. Twats. ....

.. ..

Anyway,
Russ Winstanley has given us some airplay on his fantastic Northern Soul show
on Radio Lancashire which is a real honour for us, to be able to share the
airwaves and show time with some amazing artists from days gone by.  Some of our forthcoming material has a real
tinge of that upbeat, danc-ey Northern Soul style, and you can really hear it
in tracks we’ve done already like “Lucky Stars” and of course, “Paint By
Numbers”. ....

.. ..

Football!....

Team
Ragamuffins have not been playing much due to the variety of shocking weather
conditions to descend from the heavens on a weekly basis, but suffice to say,
the two weeks we did play we saw two shock wins for us, firstly an 8-2 drubbing
for some shoddy outfit of a team (and without David who’d done his back in
loading Richard’s drum kit into his car the week before) and then a 5-0
victory. What is going on with the world!!?? The less said about “real
football” the better though. Pfft. Harrumph. And all that. ....

STOP
PRESS!! Just like the mighty Liverpool, we continued this run with an, erm,
“emphatic” 2-0 victory yesterday! What’s going on!!....

.. ..

New Website!....

Probably
should be higher up the list than amateur football results but well, never
mind! We now have a sexy new site where you can buy songs off of our two most
recent records if you fancy helping us stave off poverty, and you know, doing
your bit to save the British Economy. I have it on good word that Gordon Brown
is listening to “Lucky Stars” and thanking them on an almost daily basis! Oo
err!!....

.. ..

www.theragamuffinsmusic.co.uk....

.. ..

And
don’t forget
www.myspace.com/ragamuffinsmusic....

.. ..

And www.theragamuffins.co.uk....

.. ..

And a
massive thanks to David Pinder for helping us out with various web related
stuff.....

.. ..

.. ..

.. ..

.. ..

.. ..

That’ll
do for now.....

Expect a
few mid month messages with a few other announcements. Oh yes.....

Speaking
of the credit crunch, here’s a new song we’ve knocked together about it, called
“Fish & Chips”. See what you think…....

.. ..

The Ragamuffins – Fish & Chips....

.. ..

Well
London Bridge is falling down....

And Wall
Street’s gone delirious....

The
bankers down Canary Wharf....

Have
never looked so serious....

.. ..

I’ve
wrapped myself in cotton wool....

To save
me needing bandages....

And
Mother Nature’s on the dole....

I don’t
know how she manages....

.. ..

When all
this money’s gone down the swanny....

Yeah all
my money’s gone down the swanny....

But all
your money’s going down the swanny too....

.. ..

And a lifetime’s worth of Liquorice Allsorts,
Flying Saucers, Sherbert Dips....

Are like nothing in comparison to what she
wears upon her lips....

Now I need a few of Alan Sugar’s oh-so-famous
money making tips....

And the Monday morning papers wrap up Friday
evening tea time’s fish and chips....

.. ..

And the
world’s been choc-a-bloc of late....

With
tales of woe and misery....

But it’s
funny how we’ll break the bank....

For half
an hour of ecstasy....

.. ..

We’ll
steal a boat and set a course....

From
Merseyside to Mozambique....

Because
it’s fun to raise the stakes....

For
continental games of hide and seek....

.. ..

Lots of love....

Current mood:  anxious
Category: Music

Hello one and all. It's getting chilly outside and deate has begun raging over which Christmas songs to sneak into the set ahead of the festive season. Should really try and write our own you know! Teehee!

ANYWAY, without further ado…

LIVE!

Few more gigs this month. Some of these are acoustic shows but will be WELL worth going to and great fun. Apparently there's going to be a "who are the loudest bunch of fans" competition at the gig on the 25th in Liverpool. Oo err!!

1st November – Hurst Green Memorial Hall, LANCASHIRE (with The Ghettobillies)

5th November – MTV Liverpool Music Week @ Metropolitan, LIVERPOOL

12th November – Metrocoustic Acoustic Night, Victoria Street, LIVERPOOL (Acoustic Show)

21st November – The Grand Venue & Recording Studio, (12.30 start!), CLITHEROE (Acoustic Show)

25th November – Mocha Lounge, Sir Thomas St, LIVERPOOL (Rearranged Acoustic Show)

27th November – Hotel California, New Chester Road, BIRKENHEAD (Acoustic Show)

17th December – The Grand Venue & Recording Studio, CLITHEROE (For Cystic Fibrosis Trust)

18th December – Drakes, West Street, SOUTHPORT

We've also had our first Festival Booking of next Summer, but I'm going to do a Festival section when we've got a few of these up and running!

OTHER NEWS!

First and foremost, we'd like to announce that we're doing two little "things" for charity in December. The first and grandest in scale is our gig on the 17th December at The Grand for Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Tickets will be £3 each which is NOTHING and we'll be announcing some special guests over the next two weeks. It will also be the first opportunity to get your hands on our new record as this is being considered one of our launch nights, of sorts……

The second thing is a busk event I've (David) been invited to play at in Manchester. A good mate of ours and a fan to boot recently had a heart attack playing footy at the paltry age of sixteen. Thankfully he's survived and is recovering but many kids aren't so lucky. There's a UK based charity called "CRY", Cardiac Risk in the Young which tests active youngsters for any signs of heart problems in the future, simple electro cardiograms that can save lives. I'm going to donate my profits from this busk to CRY, because it's a charity I wholeheartedly (no pun intended) support and given the history of heart disease in my family, one that is close to my heart (once again, no pun intended!!).

The Ragamuffins are pleased to announce we are recording a new 5 track EP entitled "The Batteries Not Included EP" which will feature, yes, you guessed it, new tracks, "Batteries Not Included", "Something Sinister", "Hold Steady", and "Chemicals & Pheromones" as well as a finished version of "Paint By Numbers". Expect these to be online within two weeks and available properly in December, which is all the more reason for you to come and support our charity night!!

El Bandito has received its first review! This can be accessed here at www.bluesbunny.com and it was given a very healthy four out of five (carrots!). We'd also like to say a massive thank you and goodbye to Chicago rockers The Ghettobillies who we played with over the Halloween weekend, and a massive thank you to everyone at MTV Liverpool Music Week for asking us to play and putting on a wonderful event.

ANYWAY

Hope to see you all soon

All the best!

Peace and love

Arrivederci for now!

Crazy one, been abroad to play a gig (properly, with the full ensemble) for the first time ever and it was brilliant. I think, deep down, I might be an Italian. I mean, look at it this way, they do Ice Cream, and Pizza, and Pasta, and concise, well organised football better than anyone else in the world! What more could a boy ask for? Beautiful blue eyed brunettes? Oh, they have them as well? Crikey!

Ahem! Anyway! So the gig went well, we met and played with The Colours from Reading and what a smashing bunch of lads they are. Whilst I think their stuff on myspace is good, the new arrangements they have with a more modest three piece line up makes them sound even bigger and the little synth hooks they've got going on are fantastic.Miss their massive nationwide tour at your chagrin!

Back to the football though, and we were bridging the M62/East Lancs Road divide this Saturday better than anyone ever has (edit, well, probably). George stuck us on at half time at Anfield again (thanks so much for the constant plugging!!) and earlier in the day our live performance of "Discobiscuits" was broadcast on MUTV. At this point I'd like to point out that we have a 100% record at Anfield when being played at half time, and this would be extended to a 100% record full stop if it hadn't have been (grief that sounds dubious!) for Rob Styles' "I see Penalties that don't exist!" moment! Ah well, all is forgotten now, hope there's no hard feelings from any Man United fans reading this, it's only a game after all (yeah right!). Paul is keen to get us on at his beloved Ewood Park, but if our music brings a similar fortress like record then this might not be allowed until after Liverpool have played there!

Italy aside, we played a fantastic show in London last week, was great to see so many familiar faces there! Normally describing a venue as "intimate" translates rather crudely as "small, shite, and smelling of stale beer and wee!" but this really wasn't the case at The Ramshackle, there was a lovely cafe atmosphere there, and despite the high prices (smuggled a few bevvies in from next door - you can take the boy out of the North....) down there we loved every minute! The night was capped off by an almost twee acoustic version (but in a good way!) of Jamaica Wool bringing a clap and sing along session that brought a smile to even the most cynical of hearts. Aww.

New songs on the way, "Skipping English" has been written for months but I'm finally happy with the arrangement I've put together, "Something Sinister" is as dark yet euphoric as we wanted, "Hold Steady" almost isn't even new anymore (check out the facebook video!) and there are a few others that I won't go into yet (hope you like surprises!).

Massive thanks to Tom Michell for helping us out over in Italia, to Abbey, Carlos, Allessia and everyone at Radio Studio 92. If I've missed out a thank you then I'm very sorry, but I'm not always the most on the ball person as I'm sure you appreciate by now!

Take care everybody!

Lots of love

Current mood:  accomplished
Alrighty,

I was going to do something along the lines of the newsletter, but you know, that's a different kettle of fish entirely and if people want to read the newsletter, they'll read the newsletter. I'm going to post what else has happened this past month,

For one, I've discovered how to make coffee, officially, taste "not shite". Sticking the cup in the microwave with a load of milk in and boiling it is the trick, oh yes. The only problem I'm finding now is how to get to sleep at night with all the extra caffeine in my system. Reading my own blog could be the answer! Oooo!!!

So yeah, it's been a funny one, people I know starting to get married! Really frightening in some senses, the "how come you haven't got a girlfriend here with you/why aren't you a barrister earning 200 grand a year!?!" questions that inevitably come around when the bride/groom's mum starts chatting away to you are easily forgotten after another Guiness and Gin (don't try it kids!) but the really frightening thing that happened at the most recent of said weddings was me getting attacked by a bat. Yes, a fucking bat. One minute I'm minding my own business, texting away on the phone with one hand, and holding my pint in the other, and then, swooping down from the rafters comes a denizen of the night about two inches under my phone. I shit meself, pint goes up in the air, comes down over my head, all down my suit, and on my sleeve. Balls. No wonder bats are a protected species if they're pulling that kind of shit on a regular basis!

Finally, I've been looking around American websites for trainers and I'm appalled at the choice they have compared to us! It's the flipping 21st century man, freedom of information, movement, commerce, and yet Adidas won't let me order a pair of trabs from America, I've got to get a pair of stupidly coloured ones from their UK range that are ridiculously overpriced. It's bad enough that the retro Samba range never saw the light of day over here, but when I saw what's on their main site I nearly spat! I'm gonna have to find a sneaky way around this come October!!

Anyway, enough of my jibberish, come and see our gigs in the near future please. and listen out for us on the speakers at a football ground near you at the start of this season!
Friday, May 30, 2008
Honestly, you know, as well some of you might know, occasionally I like to put my Political hat on (as opposed to one of my many other hats that I have) and it really just dawned on me that we're meant to have a socialist government in this country and yet have a leader without a shread of socialism in him. When you've got Labour MP's being ousted in areas like Crewe & Nantwich who are 4th generation Political families, have triple barrelled names and all that..... well, it felt like pen to paper time!

Or fingers to keyboard time, wrote a song..... The Ragamuffins present "Gordon, Don't Be Blue"

Gordon, Gordon, don't be blue,
I hope you had the best intentions
Gordon, Gordon please be true,
We've learned to live with disappointments

Nothing changes but words and phrases
So Gordon, Gordon, don't be blue
Nothing changes but words and phrases
So Gordon, Gordon, don't be blue for me

Gordon, Gordon, please be brave
And bring the boys back home for Christmas
Gordon, Gordon, please behave
There's hardly any reputation left to save.....

Nothing changes but words and phrases
So Gordon, Gordon, don't be blue
Nothing changes but words and phrases
So Gordon, Gordon, don't be blue for me

It might sound a bit, well, twattish to go on about your own songs, but been playing this song, "Discobiscuits" at our last few gigs, and I love it to pieces. You get a real attachment to some songs, and this is one I really like! Think that, "Whatever Happened To The Common Decency Of Lying", "Fingernails and Fairytales" and possibly one or two other ones will be making up the cornerstone of the next EP. Cannot wait to get in the studio!

If we saw you, said hello, or you just enjoyed our tunes at the IPO Festival in Liverpool or Darwen Festival over Bank Holiday Weekend, cheers for checking us out, we hope to see you again soon!
