Here’s some exciting news.

Some of the most requested topics from the members of the  Memphis Music Resource Center have to do with legal issues.  For almost two years we researched this area – took trips to New Orleans and Nashville to study their programs and meet with a number of interested parties in Memphis.  It looks like it is about to become a reality.

What started as a legal clinic for the Memphis Music Resource Center has grown into an idea for an organization to serve ALL Memphis area artists and arts organization with legal education and low cost or no cost legal services.

A group representing the Memphis Music Foundation, Memphis Area Legal Services and a number of local attorneys and organizations has developed a frame work for the Memphis/Mid-South Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (working name).

We’d like for you to come to an organizational meeting on Tuesday – October 27 to hear the current plan and to help us shape and form the MMVLA.  We want and need your involvement in this collaboration.

Your invitation is attached – please feel free to pass it along to anyone else you think might be interested in coming – and send me your RSVP as soon as possible.  You are welcome to send a representative.   I’ll send you directions to the Memphis Music resource Center when I get your RSVP.

Memphis Songwriters Association President Phillip Beasley was allowed to make a presentation about the Memphis songwriters Association to the Memphis & Shelby County Music Commission.

Phillip was allowed to give a brief presentation discussing the history and future plans of MSA. The commissioners were very supportive of our mission to be a valuable resource and asset to the local area songwriting community. There was some discussion about future collaborations and various ways the commiission might offer support to MSA.

We thank the commission for the honor attributed to our founder Estelle  Axton and our organizations goals to be a major contributor to the future of Memphis Music.

Thnx to MSA members Max Picard & MSA Treasurer Jean Jones who were able to attend. Also thank you to all you gave there support although they were unable to attend.

PART OF THE PRESENTATION SHARED BELOW:

MEMPHIS. SONGWRITERS ASSOCIATION

MSA MISSION STATEMENT

The Memphis Songwriters Association mission is to provide networking opportunities, encourage collaboration, and identify educational resources that will help songwriters develop their songwriting craft and music industry skill sets.

  • The Memphis Songwriters Association was founded in 1973 by the Estelle Axton. Estelle Axton recently was recognized with the lifetime achievement award from NARAS at the 2009 Grammy’s. Lady A along with her brother Jim Stewart contributions was instrumental in providing Memphis Music to the world having ....Memphis.... recognized as a major Music Industry player.

  • MSA has consistently served the local area songwriting community for over (32) years and has contributed to the personal development of many songwriters who have found regional & national success.

  • MSA welcomes all musical genres & experience levels. MSA is working in partnership with various local music organizations, studios & music venues in an effort to increase membership and have the organization become more representative of the local areas diverse musical genres.

  • MSA currently conducts monthly meetings featuring various guest speakers and hosting a peer to peer song review share encouraging members & friends to share finished and/or unfinished work. The group will upon request from the songwriter provide feedback about the song structure and overall effectiveness on the listener.

  • MSA has consistently provided open mic and showcase opportunities for local area singer/songwriters and musicians enhancing the artist’s delivery & musical performance skills.

  • MSA consistently hosts songwriter’s workshops with both local and nationally recognized songwriters. These workshops encourage collaboration between songwriters and assist with the development of both their craft & music industry skills.

  • MSA has been small organizational members of the Folk ....Alliance.... International for (3) years. MSA members receive the same member services & benefits as FAI individual members. MSA participates in the FAI 501(3)(c) non-profit exemption plan and is currently learning to capitalize on the benefits associated with being a non-profit organization. MSA has hosted the FAI Open Mic at the FAI Music Conference consistently for the past (3) years which has provided MSA with great local & national exposure.

  • MSA annual individual membership fees are $50.00 with students and seniors paying a discounted rate of $35.00. All dues go toward MSA operational expenses and funding activities and the promotion of events through the MSA website. MSA is an all volunteer non-profit organization with no paid staff.

  •  MSA is an advocate for the implementation of a songwriting curriculum in the Memphis City & Shelby County K-12 school systems for the personal development of the students and the economical development of the community.
