Me, Dudley, in the flesh.  OK, the video-flesh.

Nice new one: http://lunakafe.com/moon159/usca159b.php

"Dudley Saunders stated out as a performance artist and his work holds a peculiar magnetism. He pens literate, lyrical songs with a dangerous edge.

'Love Song for Jeffrey Dahmer" for instance sees him intoning 'You're cuffed to me so you know I won't ever leave' in a dusky hush. If you don't listen closely it might slip you by just as a soft love song, much like Nick Cave's "Where the Wild Roses Grow" did. Maybe the title would be a hint even to the dimmest of consumers though. "Take Me Back Home Again" has a distinct rhythm and probably cautiously optimistic lyrics. The vocal is resplendent and Saunders peculiar talent blossoms.

"Jesus Didn't Love Us Enough" darkly looks at the disenchanted, and fearlessly shines a light where most would fear to tread. Here he feels like a natural heir to Warren Zevon and other such chroniclers of the darker sides of life.

It's heart-wrenching songs, but they are not cheaply sensationalistic. Besides, this is no fairytale world we live in. It's ugly and brutal and sometimes if you're lucky, it's beautiful for a heartbeat. Saunders is a songwriter for these times, and how."

The result of a delirious night of L.A. heat.  Enjoy.

This video is from our April 15 performance of Chris Rael's ARABY (based on James Joyce's THE DUBLINERS).  It's me singing most of the song, with the fantastic Nancy Magarill, Carlos Ponton and the composer himself.

This review looks at me from a "prog-rock" perspective (!)-- now that's a new one.  I'm now listening to the band PORCUPINE TREE because the writer kept comparing me to them ... ya know, this is the kind of individual thinking you yearn for when you make music. I'd rather have an interesting mind simply DESCRIBE what he/she hears than hear bland praise.

... and I'll keep thinking that until I start getting trashed, I'm sure ...

Current mood:  aroused

I especially love the line about having to sleep with the lights on after listening to THE EMERGENCY LANE - it's all I could have hoped for!

The Music City Muse on Dudley Saunders

By Savannah Hilton

"Starting with the bizarre looking cover, the first impression I get from this album [THE EMERGENCY LANE] is creepy. Moving on to the strangely interesting, yet powerful lyrics that need a parental advisory, this album is definitely not for the "easy listener" or the faint of heart.

Upon first listening to this album I was immediately taken in by Saunders’ melodic voice. However, after listening more closely, I found his lyrics to be quite controversial. Songs like Jesus Didn’t Love Us Enough and Love Song for Jeffrey Dahmer left me with an uneasy and troubled feeling. While it left me sleeping with the light on for a week, I am sure there is an audience for such a contentious artist.

The redoubtable Earl Dax whipped out a camera and immediately posted us on YouTube - dig the wild string-section!

Dudley singing with Rael, Magarill & Ponton

We recorded this interview last year, but it just made the 'net in late February.  He writes:  "DUDLEY SAUNDERS' THE EMERGENCY LANE is a wonder to hear on so many levels.  Saunders sounds as if he has lived forever and in almost every era. One never knows.  His story songs provoke, disturb, and titillate.  You never know what short compacted novella will travel from his voice to you at any given moment.  He has even written a song or two that sounds as old as a time honoured death-folk song from 100 years ago.  He is really THAT good."

Read this review: It seems like I'm finally getting a media identity:

I'm the guy who lures you in with beautiful music, and then sings you all kinds of horrifying lyrics you weren't prepared for.  This explains my entire, beknighted career.  This guy is nobody's fool.  (And this is at least the third review to point this out - hmmmm).
