NEWSLETTER 11-18-09

Hello Friends,

The non-profit youth center that I/we run(THE PLEA FOR PEACE CENTER) in Stockton, California will celebrate its one year anniversary on DEC 12th. Boston's BIG D AND THE KIDS TABLE along with SONIC BOOM 6 from the UK will grace the stage for our one year celebration. It's definitely been an amazing experience thus far as we learn the trials and tribulations of running a non-profit community center. We had hoped the city of Stockton would help subsidize our rent partially, but the city is financially strapped like most of the US of A. And yes, we lost over $30,000 in the first year. Well, we didn't lose like we were walking down the street and lost a wad of cash, but we spent over $30,000 the first year. Our fundraisers and shows only made up about half the rent this first year. But the last few months we've been breaking even and now we're starting to get bigger bands through. We just had the LAWRENCE ARMS/TEENAGE BOTTLEROCKET tour come through last week and on DEC 21st we have AGAINST ME. WOO HOO! It's pretty cool of these bands to take a chance on our venue. A band like AGAINST ME can easily get a guarantee of $3,000 playing a big venue in San Francisco, but are willing to play for us for no guarantee, just a percentage of the door. Anyways, I'm just pretty excited that we survived our first year.

We have lots more in store for the future including more music related workshops for our youth and hopefully more big name bands to come to this small farming town 85 miles east of San Francisco. And finally thanks to all the people who have contributed to PFP with donations and by purchasing our cd's. We appreciate you so very much.

Ok, here's some other news for you:
Talked to Matt Skiba a few days ago and he told me that the new album would come out this summer 2010. So once I get an exact date, I will put that up on the website. Also talked to Reese from FIVE IRON FRENZY and he says he needs more time editing their DVD, so we're looking at more of a MARCH 2010 release.

The ASIAN MAN XMAS/HOLIDAY card is being silk screened today. We should have them on Friday and the CD that comes with it will arrive next FRIDAY. So on that following Monday we will start sending the XMAS cards off to the masses. What else? Original artwork by Kepi Ghoulie and hand numbered 1/500. We are selling these for only $5. As you know, buying a hallmark card these days cost like $4.99. These are all hand made, two color silk screen where you can actually feel the ink rise off the paper. I love silk screening!! And of course the music. Would like to do this every year. Different bands record holiday songs and do a limited edition run like this. What do you think? Good idea? I think so. Remember there are only 500 made. After we give the bands copies and send off copies to our friends, we will only have a few hundred left. Here is the card:

Yeah, I realize it's NOVEMBER 12th, but read on and you'll get it.
Howzit... I am approximately 800 miles east of honolulu as I head home to California. For the last 5 days I've been vacationing on the island of Oahu with my wife, daughter, son, sister, brother-in-law, niece, and good ol' mom. And now I'm just 3 hrs from San Francisco Intl Airport. Our flight was delayed 2.5 hrs, which will put us on land at around 10:30 PM. We still have an hour drive back to San Jose. I'm hoping to be in my bed by midnight. Wishful thinking? Yes.

Anyways, here's what's going on in the world of Asian Man....
The MATT SKIBA "Demos" release slated for FEB. 16th is going to be pushed back until after the new Alkaline Trio album is released. Yeah, bummer bummer bummer, but when you're in a big band like the trio, sometimes you have to play by the rules of the big wigs in charge of whatever big wigs do. Matt told me he'd let me know as soon as possible in terms of a release date. But shoootzzz......the album is finished, mastered, and ready to be delivered as soon as we are given an exact date. Sorry if this causes any heartache to anyone, but will keep you updated as soon as we know what's going on.

Effective DEC 12th, 2009, Asian Man will no longer be carrying any Ben Weasel related merchandise. Ben has decided that he can no longer work with myself and asian man records. To be honest, I have no hard feelings and I only wish Ben the best. After Dec. 12th, the good folks at RECESS RECORDS will be handling all the Screeching Weasel, Riverdales, and Ben Weasel solo releases. So what does this mean other than me being bummed these great records are no longer part of the asian man catalog? Well, it means we have very little time to sell a bunch of great records. Plenty of bands touring in the next few months, O PIONEERS!!! will be doing a short run with AGAINST ME on the west coast in December, KEPI continues his relentless schedule, Andrew Jackson Jihad will be touring in January, and BTMI w/ Jeff and his IPOD will be going out on the east coast, What else? The QUEERS will actually take a little break after this year to concentrate on recording their next record, ummmm.... SMOKING POPES record release show in FEB. in Chicago, SMOKING POPES are starting to work on a new record(I'll write more details when I know more, but they are starting the process), and I guess that's it? Let me think? Shoootzzz That's all I can think of right now. Hard to concentrate on a plane when you're sitting in tiny seats. Be well friends. Happy Thursday. Hope all is well.

We are happy to say that all the KEPI GHOULIE and RIPTIDES pre-orders
have been shipped out. Remember that we ship this media mail, so it
takes a bit longer than 1st class. Give it a good 2 weeks and
hopefully it will be in your hands safe and sound.

The new NOISE BY NUMBERS "Yeah, Whatever" is now available for
mailorder. The band features DAN VAPID from Methadones/Riverdales/SW
on Guitar/vocals and also Neil Hennessey from the LAWRENCE ARMS on
drums. It kind of remind me of early Alkaline Trio with Dan Andriano singing.
hmmmm... Maybe I'm crazy.

HOODIES.. Ok, we just got a bunch of new zip up hoodies. Andrew Jackson Jihad, the
Queers, and finally an Asian Man Records zip up. In the next month, we
should be getting a new BROADWAYS design hoodie and also a LEMURIA zip
up. Such great news eh?

We just got a re-press of the BROADWAYS "Broken Van" on CD. This time
it's a digi pak and ultimately all our releases will be digi-pak
format. I hate jewel cases, they always break and look horrible. What
do you think?

Also, we got copies of DAN POTTHAST'S "EAT THE PLANET" CD. He self
released this last year and has 11 amazing tracks. Dan is on a plane
this very moment headed to MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA. He'll be touring over
there for the next few weeks.
Isn't that wonderful?

And though they are not on Asian Man, I wanted to plug a great band
called the HARD GIRLS. They just put out a free EP on QUOTE UNQUOTE

Hello friends. Hope all is well. Things are good here. Just trying to enjoy myself, work hard ,and continue to not be deterred by the evils of the music industry.

So here’s the haps around here:

We just got in the KEPI 12" vinyl and I'm listening to the warm sound whilst typing this. Nothing beats listening to a new record on the turntable. We will start shipping the vinyl next week along with the pre-orders for the KEPI package deals.

Following close behind will be the RIPTIDES new 12". We got the CDs in last week, but the LPs are still not here. We are hoping by the end of next week. PS-The message board at Asian Man was a total failure. So it is coming down. Sorry to the few of you who actually posted stuff, but when the few at Asian Man don't even post, then it's probably not a good idea to keep it up and running. It's kind of embarrassing to be honest. My friend directed me to the BRIDGE 9 message board at 11:30 PM last night and there were like a zillion people there. DOH!

Anyways, I’m sure not a lot of tears will be shed for this decision.

QUEERS POP TOUR STARTS TOMORROW

Hello one and all. We're about to embark on our first ever pop tour. We have packed away the Marshalls and Ampeg SVT's in mothballs and broken out the small amps we never knew we had. Mandy from Karmellas Game is here on rhythm guitar and keyboards-Amy from TA80 who is opening the shows is singing backup vox and Adam Leftover is back on drums. We've been feverishly (sort of) rehearsing songs we have never done live-It's Cold Outside-Little Honda-I Can't Stay Mad At You-shit like that. Voodoo Doll for my friend Robot of Temple,TX. Yeah I know he's a guy-and somewhat uncomely at that-but he wants to hear that song so we're doing it for him.

With Amy and Mandy singing backups we're able to whip off all the pop classics. If there are any songs you wanna hear leave a comment on here and we'll try to do them. I'll list the potential song list this week. Every time we turn around there's another one we want to do but we'll bang it together.

In LA Mandy bails for home and Amy will take over on keys and guitar. Adam and The Leftovers bail for the UK and we head to Japan for 3 shows. The one and only Dusty Watson is jumping in for drums for Japan and the rest of the tour. We have of course played onstage here and there with Dusty but not many songs. So this will be a treat. I have already packed my Fender Reverb Unit for Japan and we're gonna be blasting it out for our friends over there. The Parasites are doing the 3 shows in Japan with us-Dave Parasite has been concerned about who is headlining in Japan. We gladly said go for it dude-though with Dusty Watson along and my Fender Reverb Unit we are determined to make him pay for his insolence. Plan on lots of surf instumentals and Beach Boys' tunes for Japan and the end of the US tour.

In other news we are doing a Drunken Cholos/Rich White Males split 7" and I'll give more info on that as we get it. That's gonna be on Attic Tan Records run by good pal Sol of Disaster Us. Disaster Us were just in the studio as well as Teenage Rehab, the immortal local Atlanta punk rock hero Jesse Nobody and Captain Black from Chattanooga.
